Abendroth joined the Nazi party in 1937. After the war, because of his past with the Nazi Party, he didn’t manage to get a new stable position anywhere in Germany. Cond: Hymisher GREENBURG
Prod. Co: Tring International Group PLC; Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire Time: (?) CD: MENDELSSOHN – SYMPHONY NO. 4 “ITALIAN”
Symphonia Digital Classics SYM 016 (Tk 5) Notes: This symphony orcherstra, based in Austria, was founded in 1994 by Yehudi Menuhin and Peter Jan Marthé as "Junge Österreichische Philharmonie." Hymisher Greenburg was an alias of the Classical music conductor Alfred Scholz, used for cheap editions. See also another recording of the overture released around 1977 by Alfred Scholz going under the alias of Alberto Lizzio (see Part 4). It was not possible to precisely date this release, but an earlier Symphonia Digital Classics release, SYM 007, was dated 1991, so presumably this one dates to the early 1990s. Comp: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Perf: SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Cond: Joseph SWENSEN
Prod. Co: Linn Records; Glasgow, Scotland Rec. Loc: Usher Hall, Edinburgh Rec. Date: July 2002 Time: 9:51 CD: MENDELSSOHN – Violin Concerto & Symphony No. 3
Linn CKD 216 (Tk 1) Notes: Joseph Swensen currently holds the post of Conductor Emeritus of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Curiously enough, the still cave photo used in the beginning of the YouTube audio sample does not show Fingal’s Cave instead it has MacKinnon’s Cave, which is on the southwest coast of the Isle of Staffa. Later the video has an aerial shot of the island showing Fingal’s Cave, but then comes back to MacKinnon’s Cave. The cover photo shows a columnar basalt shoreline terrace, but it’s not on Staffa, it’s most likely part of the Devil’s Causeway across the sea in Northern Ireland. ORCHESTRA – VOL. 1 (1935-1950) Q Disc 97017 (13XCDs) (Disc 9 – Tk ?) Notes: This boxed set covers 1935-1950 and includes "selected recordings" of the Concertgebouw Orchestra from Dutch radio archives. As far as it was possible to learn this 1947 radio recording was the first recording of the overture by Otto Klemperer and was released for the first time on this CD. One critic stated that this recording was made “during the more dynamic period of the conductor’s career.” (R.E.B. 2003) There were two earlier recordings of the overture by Otto Klemperer: one in 1960 with The Philharmonia Orchestra (see Part 3) and the other in 1969 (released in 1995) with Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra listed above (see CL-FG-P5-17). One critic wrote about this performance – “The Hebrides opens with the gentlest of deep sea-swells with Staffa viewed as if by luminescence. The transitions have an almost Brucknerian grandeur and expansiveness, and if the allegro section can be considered too slow, when the storm finally arrives is undoubtedly the real thing.” (Cooksey 2005) Sergiu Celibidache recorded an earlier performance in 1976 with The SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (see Part 4).
