Hi John, Peter and team,
Everybody at Ch Margaux very helpful. They have been great with info on the viticultural practices, trials, clones and winemaking. Spending a lot of time with all, including everyday chats with Paul.
I have been promoted with regards to lunches, now with the senior staff, including Corinne, Paul etc. Had Ch Margaux’s Pavillon Blanc ’10 and Grand Vin ’99 for lunch yesterday, bugger! Have tried the PB ’10 three times now, looks very good, more Cape Crest like.
Had lunch with Kees at Cheval Blanc on Sunday. Oh and on Saturday, after watching the rugby with the Margaux maintenance team, real hard cases, got invited to have a ‘small’ lunch with them (pate, bbq’d steaks, pastis and wine) then after, for the usual formal Margaux lunch. What with winning the rugby as well, a big day! Didn’t have a lot for dinner that night.
Marie, Thomas and I have been visiting other Chateaus, have been to Latour, Ausone. At Pichon tasted their 2010’s then Neil Martin came for an appointment to taste their 2009’s so looked at them alongside Neil, then had lunch together. He said he saw Nick in London.
Had the end of vintage lunch party yesterday. 250 people with a menu, wine list and DJ! I got a pretty good seat, next to Corinne! Had some great lunch time wines including the big fi ve ’85’s - Mouton, Haut Brion, Lafi te, Margaux, and Latour, then ’81 Margaux, then 4 hours of Champagne.
The weather has been good, lots of talk about the rugby of course. How good was Issy Dagg!
Still managing time for lunch and wine, would be insulting not to.
Phil

COLERAINE ‘87 ’s WORLD CUP TRIUMPHWhat a match!
I’d said those French were plotting something ... who knew it was a repeat of the inaugural ’87 fi nal.
It made our Coleraine ’87 the perfect celebratory wine, and, when we released twelve bottles, you snapped them up in just one day.
Someone in the Prime Minister’s Offi ce must be reading our newsletters. They were quickly on the phone, as John Key wanted Coleraine ’87 for his own ‘Best of New Zealand’ World Cup party.
So, on the eve of the fi nal, John and I joined 180 New Zealand and international World Cup dignitaries, rubbing shoulders with royalty and celebrities, as they enjoyed Coleraine ’87.
Fittingly, Sean Fitzpatrick was the fi rst to ‘try’ it. Together with Phil Keoghan, they started an ‘Amazing Race’, and, as word got around, Coleraine became the star of the night.
What a statement it was - 24 year old Coleraine wowing the international jet set and setting the standard for the ‘Best of New Zealand’.
With New Zealand World Champions again in 2011, Coleraine ’11 is sure to feature in future World Cup celebrations. While Coleraine is certainly capable of waiting another 24 years ... I’m not sure this fan can.
‘Fitzy’ and John enjoying Coleraine ‘87.
