What the Volunteer Transportation Center does:

The Volunteer Transportation Center provides transportation to residents of Jefferson & Lewis Counties who have no other way of getting to medical appointments or grocery stores.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A VOLUNTEER DRIVER?

Volunteer Drivers donate their time, but are reimbursed for mileage. In 2011, volunteers drove 10,000 one-way trips covering 320,000 miles for a cost of $192,000. To inquire about becoming a driver, call 315-788-0422 or 315-376-3777.

Cost of Transportation

The Volunteer Transportation Center does not charge clients for these services; although, we do ask clients to make as much of a donation as they can afford. Clients donated $12,380.50 in 2011 toward helping others to get rides. No one will be refused transportation because of an inability to donate.

HISTORY OF NORTH COUNTRY CHILI COOK-OFF

Each year the Jefferson County American Legion Auxiliary and the American Legion Family host the North Country Chili Cook-Off to help raise money for the Volunteer Transportation Center. The event was established 14 years ago by Phyllis Bachman, Past National President of the American Legion Auxiliary, and Ben Coe, Board of Directors for the Volunteer Transportation Center. The 10th Annual North Country Chili Cook-Off was dedicated to them.

Last year’s event raised over $40,000 for the Volunteer Transportation Center. We had over 35 Chefs and some amazing Chili! It has been named the “must attend” winter event for our area.
