An Overview/Theme of John 20: “Seeing Is Believing!”
• The apostles were eyewitnesses of the resurrection!– Of His death, John wrote that he was a witness and his
“testimony is true” (19:35).– “God raised up, of which we are all witnesses” (Acts 2:32)!– “Presented Himself alive…by many infallible proofs” (Acts 1:3)!– To later emphasize the reality & the certainty of the bodily
resurrection, John wrote:• “We have heard…have seen…looked upon…our hands have handled” (1
Jn. 1:1).• They were ear-witnesses, eye-witnesses and hand-witnesses.
– There was and is no doubt that Jesus was raised from the dead!• The apostles believed it because they knew it!

An Overview/Theme of John 20: “Seeing Is Believing!”
• The reliable testimony of the apostles (as eyewitnesses) gives our faith assurance!– Their testimony is true (John 19:34; 21:24), for it is inspired!– Jesus decreed a blessing on “those who have not seen and yet
have believed” (29; cf. Heb. 11:1).– “Many other signs” were done in their presence (20:30).– All of the signs done by Christ were written down:
• That readers “may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” (John 20:31).
• “And that believing [they] may have life in His name” (John 20:31).– “Believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will
be saved” (Rom. 10:9).

An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!”
• Jesus came to give His disciples the basics for life! – “Children, have you any food?” (John 21:5).
• They had nothing (John 21:3, 5), not even the basics.– When the disciples reached shore, they saw fish on the fire and
bread (John 21:9).• Jesus said, “Come and eat breakfast” (John 21:12).• Jesus “took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish” (John
21:13).– Just the basics: nothing fancy, nothing unnecessary, but exactly
what they needed!

An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!”
• Jesus came to give His disciples the opportunity to obey Him!– “Cast the net on the right side of the boat…” (John 21:6).
• As experienced fishermen who caught nothing, they could have argued.– The text says, “So they cast…” (John 21:6).
• Jesus said to cast…they cast. • Jesus said to cast on the right side…so they cast.
– Jesus gave them the opportunity to recognize His authority & to obey. And they did!
![Page 11: Chapter 20](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816694550346895dda778c/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!”
• Jesus came to give His disciples an over-abundance!– 7 disciples in the boat (21:2). How many fish did they need?– When they obeyed the Lord’s command, He could have given
them just enough.– Upon their full compliance to His command:
• “They were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish” (6).• They “came in the little boat…dragging the net with fish” (John 21:8).• The net was “full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three” (21:11).• “There were so many…” (John 21:11).
– The disciples started with nothing (John 21:3) and were given an over-abundance!
![Page 12: Chapter 20](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816694550346895dda778c/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!”
• Jesus came to give His disciple another chance!– Peter proclaimed, “I will lay down my life for Your sake” (13:37).– A few hours later, Peter adamantly denied Jesus 3x (17,25-27).– Jesus went thru a lengthy, painful but necessary restoration.
• Jesus proceeded to ask Peter three times, “Do you love Me?” (21:15-17).– Perhaps asking 3 questions was to correspond with the 3 denials.
– In the process and succession of these questions:• Peter was grieved at his overconfidence & impetuousness against Jesus.• Peter was brought to a level of commitment he sustained for life.• Jesus secured in Peter a stronger, humbler and more devoted leader.
– Jesus gave Peter a second chance, and Peter did not let the Lord down!

An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!”
• Jesus came to give His disciple some final instructions!– In the process of restoring Peter, Jesus gave Him three
instructions, then two more.– Jesus had work for Peter to do, if he would truly commit
himself (but not rashly).• “Feed My lambs” (21:15). The young & immature needed to be taught.• “Tend My sheep” (21:16). Jesus’ followers needed a faithful shepherd.• “Feed My sheep” (21:17). The old & mature needed to be taught, also.• “Follow Me” (21:19) – resume the work that he was called to do• “Follow Me” (21:22) – don’t worry about others, take your responsibility
