AUGUST 2013

elcome to our 85th season! What a treat to be able to celebrate this wonderful organization’s 85th birthday. It is a true testament

to the support and involvement of our community that we have a joyfulplace to come and share common experiences.

Since you don’t turn 85 every day, we have decided to celebrate theoccasion by putting together a season filled withblockbuster after blockbuster. You’re sure to beentertained and engaged. For starters, we’ll bekicking off the season with Les Misérables. Thisinternational sensation has recently become availableto community theatres for the first time in its 25 yearhistory. Judging from all early indicators, this is goingto be a hugely popular production, so you’ll want toorder your tickets as soon as possible. If you are asubscriber you can redeem your subscriptionadmissions AND order as many extra tickets as youwould like right now. And while you’re at it, you canorder your tickets for the entire season!

Les Misérables is just one of the terrific showswe have in store for you this season. We’ll celebratethe holidays with the family favorite Peter Pan andkick off the New Year with Stephen Sondheim’sInto the Woods. And for the first time in our history we’ll be producingIrving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun. If you enjoy a good laugh, you won’twant to miss the classic comedies Arsenic and Old Lace and Boeing,Boeing. We will be re-visiting two iconic Americans, Helen Keller andAnnie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker, and meet some compelling newcharacters in Good People, a play that examines classism in America. And for younger audiences, our Youth Theatre will be producing three amazing shows. Nancy Drew: Girl Detective, The Cat in the Hat and TheMagical Adventures of Merlin will all be Kalamazoo premieres. Thesefamily friendly shows are a great way to introduce the children in yourlife to the magic of theatre on both sides of the curtain!

Now in its eighth year, our Senior Class Reader’s Theatre will presenttwo terrific productions. Songs of the Silver Screen, a wonderful musicalrevue featuring music made famous in the movies will be producedthis fall. A staged reading of Irena’s Vow, the story of one of the mostcourageous and unsung heroes of World II, Irena Gut Opdyke will beoffered next spring.

We hope you’ll join us on Sunday, August 11 at 4:00pm when weperform in Bronson Park as part of the Arts Council of GreaterKalamazoo’s Concerts in the Park Series. The 85th AnniversaryConcert will be a musical celebration of our past as well as an excitingglimpse into all that the future holds. It’s sure to be an afternoon filled

with standards, new works and maybe even an oldfashioned sing-along!

In addition to all of the great shows we have coming up; we also have some exciting new thingsplanned for our Academy of Theatre Arts. Now in itssecond year, the Academy will continue to providestudents ages 3 to 103 with educational experiencesfocusing on performance and technical theatre. This fall we are adding great new classes gearedspecifically toward the theatre enthusiast. We havedeveloped a lunch time lecture series called“Second Fridays” that is designed to take patronsbeyond the footlights as they gain insight into thethemes and design concepts associated with a production. Patrons will then attend the productionand enjoy a backstage tour immediately followingthe performance.

We will also be offering a fun-filled lecture series on the history ofmusical theatre. Dr. Patrick Coyle will provide participants with aninformative exploration of the one true American art form. He willdelve into what is currently being performed in contemporaryAmerican Musical Theatre and give you a little taste of Broadway. These new offerings along with many more classes and workshops, will be featured in our Academy of Theatre Arts Fall Catalog, whichwill be available August 15.

For 85 years the Civic has been shining the spotlight on our community. As the community’s theatre we have the distinct pleasureof offering participation on both sides of the curtain. The experienceswe take away from a live theatrical event may vary from person to person, but it is undeniable that these experiences enrich our lives tremendously.

Thank you for being a part of the Civic family. I look forward toseeing you at the theatre, as we celebrate our 85th anniversary. – KC
