Allnewandsecond-handplantandmachinerydesigned,constructedandsuppliedforuseinprocessandproductionworkingenvironmentswithintheEUmustcomplywithoneormorelegalrequirementswhenfirstplacedonthemarketorputintoservice.Thisistoensurethatitcanbeusedsafelyandwithoutharmtooperators.MostCEMarkingrequirementssetbroadobjectivesforensuringthehealthandsafetyoftheusersoftheplantandmachineryaswellasotherswhomaybeaffectedandconsumersofingredientsandmaterialsprocessedoncertaintypesofmachinery;suchasfood,cosmeticsandpharmaceuticalproducts.Therequirementcoversindividualplantandequipmentaswellascomplexproductionlinesmadeupofindividualmachinesandequipment.
Physicalsafety,includinghealtheffectsofplantandmachineryinallitsvariousaspectsincludingselectionofmaterialsusedinconstruction,meansofcontrol,risksfrommovingparts,fixedguards,lighting,hazardsfromelectricalequipment,safeguards,noise,vibration,radiation,emissionofdustfromtheequipment,maintenanceanddocumentationareallpartofthelegalrequirementknownasessentialhealthandsafetyrequirements(EHSR’s).
Theprinciplesofsafetybydesignmusttakeintoaccountanyforeseeableuseandmisuseoftheequipment.Itisalsonecessarytoprovideinformationforenduserssuchasmarkings,warningsandcomprehensiveinstructionsonsafeuse.

FEGcarryoutadetailedriskassessmentbyidentifyingthehealthandsafetyhazards(trapping,crushing,electricalshock,hazardsfromdustorfumes,noise,vibration,etc)thatarelikelytobepresentwhenthemachineryisused.Wealsoassessthelikelylevelofrisksinvolved.

TheDirectivecoversnew,old/refurbishedandsecond-handmachineryfromwithintheEuropeanEconomicArea(EEA)andanyimportedplant,equipmentandmachineryifusedwithintheEEA.
Declaration of ConformityThisismadeavailablewhenthemachineryisfinishedandreadyforinstallationanduse.TheDeclarationofConformitymustthenaccompanythemachinethroughthesupplychaintotheenduser.
TheDeclarationofConformityincludes:
• Nameandaddressofthemanufacturerand,whereappropriate,thenameandaddressoftheirauthorisedrepresentative
• Adescriptionofthemachinery,itsmake,typeandserialnumber
• AlistallofEuropeanlaws(Directives)withwhichthemachinerycomplies
• Detailsofanynotifiedbodythathasbeeninvolved
• Standardsusedinthemanufacture(ifany)
• TheplaceanddateoftheDeclaration,andbesignedbyapersonwithauthoritytodoso.
