Some of the most in demand, well-compensated workers today can be found wielding hammers, tuning engines, running wire and welding panels. A generation ago, the skilled trades were a well-trod path into long-term, satisfying careers. After being overlooked for many years, the fi eld has gained a fresh relevance as new grads entering the workforce and career switchers alike discover that some of the most promising job titles today come with some very old-fashioned names. Electricians are designing and installing the sophisticated wiring that runs throughout a home to support today’s must-have consumer electronics and entertainment systems, auto mechanics are using computers to transform balky engines into purring, high-performance machines, and welders are performing mission-critical welds on state-of-art naval vessels. Not only have many aspects of the trades gone high-tech, but these jobs can’t be sent offshore – a plumber may use a digital imaging camera to inspect the inside of a homeowner’s pipes, but any leaks detected require a hands-on fi x. In an age of downsizing, that’s welcome news to job hunters looking for security. And while hiring is slow to non-existent in some fi elds, skilled tradespeople with a reputation for reliability are fi nding the welcome mat rolled out for them. “Finding skilled tradespeople is one of the issues in our industry,” confi rms Les Ore, a local builder who also owns Home Theaters by DAS. “Putting in a home theater or doing the structural wiring in a house, we need those skilled craftsmen and they’re tough to fi nd.” When Ore does fi nd craftspeople who have mastered their trade and demonstrate a willingness to work, he does everything he can to hang on to them. “They’re gold,” he says. “We hire them and we keep them.” Cathey Botwright, president of Seaside Staffi ng, an agency that places skilled tradespeople in local shipyards, also deals with shortages of qualifi ed workers. “One of the struggles that we have in recruiting is that there aren’t enough folks out there who have the marine experience that we need. “Years ago in Tidewater there were apprenticeship programs all over the place. People could get out of high school or vocational school or college and go
into one of these apprentice programs. Slowly the apprentice programs started shutting down and that’s really caught up with our area. Most of our skilled tradespeople are older – they’re in their late 30s, 40s, 50s – and we don’t have a whole lot of new people coming through to replace them.” Part of this defi cit has been driven by an emphasis on career tracks other than the skilled trades by guidance counselors, career advisers, cultural infl uences and a changing slate of hot-button professions. “If you remember, ten years ago IT (information technology) was the big fi eld and everybody was going to college to get an IT job,” says Botwright. Because the trades were overshadowed for so long, she says, employers are dealing with an under supply of qualifi ed workers today. “So this is a great opportunity for people to go into the trades and fi nd a secure job,” she says. “If they have a good work ethic and no safety violations, those folks will constantly have work.” And well-paying work at that. “You can make a lot more money than with a degree in English,” says Botwright. “These trades can make anywhere from $19 an hour on up to $29-$30 an hour and they’re not salaried, so that’s on straight time. Their overtime is obviously one and a half times that rate. They have some very, very impressive paychecks.” “I don’t think people realize that you can make a really good living working with your hands,” adds Stephen Quick, a builder and partner in the family-owned Stephen Alexander Homes & Neighborhoods. “One of our trim carpenters is extraordinarily skilled and he’s very successful. He went to college to become a physical therapist, but now he runs a carpentry business and he makes a lot more money doing trim work and custom built-ins that he could ever make being a physical therapist.” More importantly – “He loves what he does,” says Quick. The skilled trades represent hundreds of individual job categories that cater to a wide variety of talents and interests and offer satisfying opportunities for personal and professional growth, including moving into management roles or starting your own business. So if you’re looking for a rewarding career that’s in demand, the trades are a great place to start.

There are plenty of job categories that can be outsourced – automotive mechanic is not one of them. This hands-on, increasingly high-tech career is a great choice for those looking for a rewarding, in-demand fi eld that offers a great deal of job security. “There are always jobs,” agrees Bud Brueggeman, who just retired as Tidewater Community College’s automotive technology program head.“Even during the slowdown there were jobs for automotive techs. It’s one of those fi elds where if you are a skilled employee, you can get a job.”It’s also a fi eld where you’re as likely to use a wrench as a piece of high-tech equipment. “When I fi rst started, computers were just being introduced into vehicles,” recalls Larry Grubb, the auto tech coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “A lot of technicians at that time didn’t want any part of it,” he laughs. “Today just about every single system on a car is computer controlled in one way or the other, from brakes to lights and steering suspension. What we’re seeing is that students nowadays are technically savvy, so that defi nitely helps them grasp a lot of this.” Grubb says the complex work that automotive techs perform is just the beginning of where the fi eld is heading. “It’s getting very interesting. I’ve been doing this for probably 30 years now or longer and it’s as exciting for me today as when I was fi rst starting out because the technology keeps changing; there’s something new to learn all the time. Now there’s this new fuel injection, there are the hybrids and there are all the alternative fuels – it’s hard to imagine where this area is going to go.” People who enjoy problem solving are a good fi t for this occupation, Grubb says. “When you have a vehicle come in with a problem, being able to address that challenge and see it leave with the issue repaired is very satisfying.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a fi ve percent growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2018, with a current median hourly pay rate of $16.88. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $28.71 per hour. To enter the fi eld, mechanics can earn an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive technology, or certifi cation in several areas that prepare them for ASE exams, the industry standard.Brueggeman is seeing a fairly diverse group entering the automotive program, from new high school grads to career switchers and former military personnel. “Women do really well,” he says. “We have one graduate who is working for a Honda dealership and she’s never had a ‘comeback’ (where the vehicle needs additional work after the initial repair) and that’s unheard of. We have more college-educated students than we’ve ever had, including people with graduate degrees. They may have been laid off or their job wasn’t what they thought it would be and they want to change careers.” While you’ll fi nd most mechanics working for dealerships and independent repair shops or starting their own business, they also attract employers in other industries, says Brueggeman. “For example, the wind turbine industry has more recently gone after our automotive tech students, so somebody fi gured out that these guys and gals have a lot of skills that are transferable and that’s something the automotive industry is going to have to pay attention to.” In the meantime, auto techs can exercise those highly-valued skills in an always-interesting industry that embraces new technology and change.

SEASIDE STAFFINGtidewater’s home for the skilled
trade workforce
Just call Hampton Roads shipyard central. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair fi rms, from large organizations that employ tens of thousands of workers, to smaller businesses and subcontractors that may employ a few workers or several hundred. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualifi ed people to fi ll them. Cathey Botwright, president of Seaside Staffi ng, an agency that places skilled tradespeople in local shipyards, often struggles to fi ll openings. “We hire for all the marine trades, such as electricians, pipefi tters and welders. And these are very specialized skills. Even with outside and inside machinists, it’s a different world in the marine industry than the construction world.” When she does fi nd skilled marine tradespeople who are reliable, she has no problem fi nding them jobs. “Those folks will constantly have work,” she says. “A lot of the shipyards hire our people as temp-to-hire, and once they’ve proven they have the skills they say they have and can be relied on, then the shipyards hire them onto their full-time payroll.” It requires a diversity of trades to keep a shipyard humming, including carpenters, electricians and welders. “There are also laggers who install insulation, pipefi tters, and pattern makers,” lists Brad Mason, director of operations for AMSEC, a marine services company. “You’ve got electronics technicians, outside machinists, inside machinists, shipfi tters who cut and position metal on the ship, and riggers who use chain falls and cranes to move heavy loads, which is an art in and of itself. There are a lot of different skills represented in a shipyard.” “Right now I think the hardest trade of all to fi ll in the marine world would be aluminum MIG and TIG welders,” notes Botwright. “Those are extremely diffi cult to fi nd.” Skilled marine tradespeople can expect excellent opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, many of the shipyards and marine services companies hire apprentices and pay them to learn a trade, and they also offer a variety of degree programs, leadership classes and training courses. Botwright places the pay range between $19 an hour up to $30 an hour, with plenty of overtime hours available at rates of $20 - $45. “They have some very, very impressive paychecks,” she says. “And if you go to work on a ship, there are so many opportunities to grow. Most of the management at these privately-owned shipyards here, from the foremen to the directors to the vice presidents and executive management, they all came from the trades. Metro shipyard and the old Northrup Grumman Newport News, all of their management came from working on the ships. They showed the ability to do more and they all rose from the deck of a ship.” Along with great pay, excellent job security and opportunities to advance, there’s also the pride and satisfaction of working on some of the Navy’s most sophisticated vessels, says Botwright. “We did a lot of work for Northrup Grumman when they built the U.S.S. George H. W. Bush and it’s really neat to say, yeah, I helped build that ship.”

DRIVERS DRIVERS Almost every product we use travels by truck at some point - food, clothing, household products, equipment, even the cars on a dealership lot– which explains the nearly 3.2 million trucks on the road today. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs to jump by nine percent. That increased demand for more drivers just as many of the older pros reach retirement age means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. Here in Hampton Roads, the need is especially apparent. Not only does the region anchor the geographic center of the country’s Eastern Seaboard, but it’s home to one of the world’s busiest ports where a tremendous number of products are transferred from ship to truck every day. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training that prepares students to pass the test and successfully fi nd work. “Our truck driving classes are picking up and those guys are getting jobs,” reports Theresa Bryant, vice president for workforce development at Tidewater Community College. “We have companies that come in and actually recruit our students right out of school,” adds Matthew Woods, an instructor for TCC’s truck driving program. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” Woods says. TCC’s program is eight weeks and features state-of-the-art simulators as well as a skills range for actual wheels-on-the-road driving experience. Once they are licensed, truck drivers can choose over-the-road runs that take them all the way across the country, or work pick-up and delivery hauls within their city or region. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Woods. “Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe fi ve years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” he says. Aside from good pay and the security of knowing a driving career isn’t likely to be outsourced, trucking also appeals to those who prize their independence. Once drivers pull away from a loading dock, there’s no one looking over their shoulders and that can be very rewarding indeed.

Skilled tradespeople in the construction industry are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Training programs at local community colleges and technical schools cover some of the trades, while many area builders and subcontractors welcome apprentices and interns. Another training option is the Building Trades Academy created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally, such as carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing. Occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for carpenters, cement masons, brick masons, tile setters, drywallers and electricians are expected to increase by 12-14 percent, while insulation installers and construction laborers should see an increase of 17-20 percent. The pay can be quite good. Electricians, for instance, earn a median hourly wage of $22 with top earners claiming over $38 an hour.

Huntington Ingalls Industries is an Equal Opportunity Employercommitted to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce.
With the demand for skilled tradespeople growing, the number of training programs available has grown as well, whether you are a recent high school graduate or a career switcher who already holds a degree. These programs are designed to place you in a well-paying career in as little as a few months for some trades to as long as four years for a registered apprenticeship. Many tradespeople earn associate’s degrees or higher along the way, and most fi elds require continuing education to keep workers up-to-date with advances in technology. One of the best options for entering a skilled trade is through an apprenticeship program. Here in Hampton Roads you’ll fi nd a wide assortment of opportunities, from local trade groups to regional employers who offer registered apprenticeships that give new hires the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they work toward their journeyman’s card. High school students can get a head start on a skilled trades career by taking classes developed through public school/community college partnerships. And the Virginia Community College System, along with career and technical schools, have developed an extensive list of accredited programs that lead to certifi cation, licensure or degrees in a large number of skilled trade areas. “Many of the programs at Tidewater Community College are short-term options in the form of certifi cates that plug into the longer term option of an associate’s degree, and in some cases they would even transfer into a baccalaureate degree,” says Daniel DeMarte, vice president for academic and student affairs at the college. The Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard, at www.vawizard.org, lays out many of these options. “You can go through a series of career inventory questions that narrow down the kinds of occupations where you may have an interest,” describes DeMarte, “and maybe take that a step further and bring that down to a regional perspective by looking at the kinds of entry-level and longer-term jobs that are available, what they pay and how many opportunities there are.” Another training option is the Building Trades Academy created by the Tidewater Builders Association. “We’ve adapted the courses over the years to the high growth jobs,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of Ainslie Group, a custom home building fi rm. Program graduates are quickly absorbed by local building, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and other companies. “We’ve also had a number of the apartment management companies come to us to tailor programs for property management and maintenance,” he says. More choice means more ways to pursue a satisfying career that grows along with you, points out Theresa Bryant, TCC’s vice president for workforce development. “Individuals don’t close doors by going into a trade. They can start with a certifi cate if they want to or go straight into an associate’s program, but there’s a real ladder for them to go in many different directions over the long term. Some will go on to a four-year degree and work in a management position, some will really like the work in their trade, but maybe advance to a supervisory or training role.” With so many ways into the fi eld, and so many ways to thrive, training to become a skilled tradesperson can be a smart investment in a rewarding career that goes the distance.
