Thomas T. Sandel ß 1924-1983

Thomas T. Sandel, a Fellow of the Society, died on 12 September 1983. He was born in Texas in 1924 and took both undergraduate and graduate degrees, including the Ph.D. in 1954, at the University of Texas. During World War II and again in 1950 he served as a Naval Aviator in the United States Marine Corps where he rose to the rank of Captain. In 1947 he married Katherine Wetzel. Subsequently, their family included four chil- dren: Martha, Tommy, David, and Karin.

After a year of work in the Defense Research Laboratory and in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas, he began an almost ten-year association with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, first in the Research Laboratory of Electronics in the Laboratory of Communica- tion Biophysics, then in the Lincoln Laboratory, and finally as Executive Secretary of the LINC Evaluation Board.

He came to Washington University in 1964 to continue his work in psychophysics and in the physiology of hearing at the Computer Research Laboratory. He was also appointed Professor of Psychology. From 1966-70 he was an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of Amer- ica, and from 1958-61 was a member of the Society's committee on Physio- logical and Psychological Acoustics.

In 1969 he moved from the Medical Campus to the Hilltop Campus to become Chairman of the Department of Psychology, a position that he held until the time of his death. His interest in scientific training, his encourage- ment of young researchers, and his early interest in the application of com- puter technology to the biological and behavioral sciences all serve as a living memorial of the man and his work.

Naghdi to receive Honorary Membership of ASME

Paul M. Naghdi, Fellow of the Society and Professor of Engineering Science, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, has been named an Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was to receive this award at the ASME Winter Annual Meeting in Boston, 15-18 November 1983.

The honor recognizes his distinguished service to the mechanical engi- neering profession through his pioneering research on the modeling of ma- terial behavior, his dedicated and innovative teaching, his work as industrial consultant, and his energetic and effective leadership in the field of theoreti- cal and applied mechanics.

Dr. Naghdi received his B. S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 1946 and his M. S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Michigan in 1948 and 1951, respectively.

2nd International Conference on Modal

Analysis: 6-9 February 1984

The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn, International Drive, Orlando, Florida. Over 140 technical papers from 23 countries are expect-

ed, and there will be a comprehensive exhibit of modal analysis equipment and peripherals.

Inquiries should be made to Peter Juhl [{518) 385-9721], who is in charge of the Technical Program.

17th International Congress on Audiology: 26- 30 August 1984

The Congress will be held on the University of California campus in Santa Barbara. The conference is of interest to audiologists, physicians, acousticians, engineers, and others involved with the hearing sciences.

For information and Call for Papers, please write to 17th ICA Secre- tariat, P.O. Box 60107, Santa Barbara, CA 93160; or call (805) 967-9909.

Four-week summer program in underwater acoustics and signal processing

A four-week summer program in Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing will be offered 4-29 June 1984 by the Pennsylvania State Univer- sity's Applied Research Laboratory and Graduate Program in Acoustics.

Graduate level instruction is provided in five accredited courses: Fun- damentals of Acoustics, Underwater Sound Propagation, Sonar Engineer- ing, Digital Signal Processing, and Electroacoustic Transducers. Partici- pants are encouraged to enroll in two courses and audit if desired. The program's major goal is to provide in-depth knowledge of fundamental concepts and techniques along with an overview of current research and development activities. The fee $1950.00 covers cost of registration, text- books, class notes, reference material, viewgraphs, coffee breaks, and two social events.

Written inquiries should be directed to Dr. Alan D. Stuart, Summer Program Coordinator, c/o the Penn. State Graduate Program in Acoustics, P.O. Box 30, State College, PA 16801. Telephone inquiries may be made to Mrs. Barbara Crocken, Administrative Assistant, at {814) 865-6364.

Call for nominations for INCE Education Award

The INCE Education Award is for excellence in the teaching of noise control engineering. It is intended to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to the education of future noise control engineers by teaching one or more courses in noise control engineering to graduate or undergraduate students. It is not intended that the award be given annually, but it should be given at least once very five years. The first time, it will be given as the "INCE Education Award in memory of John C. Johnson" at Inter-Noise '84 in December 1984 in Honolulu, HI. The amount of the award will be $2000.

Eligibility: Any teacher of courses in acoustics and noise control which are part of a regular academic program at an American college or university.

Prices of INTER-NOISE Proceedings are reduced

The first of the well-known series of INTER-NOISE Conferences on

noise control engineering was held in Washington, DC in December 1972. Since the first meeting, 11 annual INTER-NOISE Conferences have been held in seven different countries, and world-wide interest in noise control technology has grown rapidly. The proceedings of the INTER-NOISE se- ries have been an important source of information on noise control techno- logy for many years.

All of the Procx•ings of past conferences are still available, and a reduced price is now available for a limited time for nearly all volumes. The list prices of these volumes have been reduced by 25%-35% until 30 June 1984. This is the last time that a complete set of INTER-NOISE Proceed- ings will be available.

A flyer which describes the volumes in the series and contains ordering information may be obtained from the Institute of Noise Control Engineer- ing, P.O. Box 3206, Arlington Branch, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
