Façades
Whether concrete, plaster or wood, façades demand durable coatings that offer fl exibility in color design, alkali resistance and a long working life. In addition, more recent developments like effi cient solar heat management and label-free products are becoming increasingly popular. Within our Xfast® and Luconyl® NG ranges, we offer a variety of pigment preparations based on high-performance organic and inorganic pigments in solid or liquid form. They cover a wide color space and feature excellent durability for water-based and solar heat management façade coating systems. Our wide range of Sicopal®, Sicotan® and Paliotan® pigments are used to create special optical effects that allow new and unique design surfaces to be produced.
Interior walls
Interior walls are especially subject to tough wear and tear and need coatings that display good wash and scrub resistance and particularly color fastness. Our Xfast® and Luconyl® NG ranges offer a wide variety of cost-effective and high-performance pigment preparations based on intrinsically strong, highly chromatic pigments. They cover the complete color space required for interior coatings based on powder pigments from the Irgalite®, Irgazin®, Sicopal®, Paliotan®, Heliogen®, Cinquasia® and Cromophthal® ranges. In addition, we produce effect pigments that can create distinctive optical effects, including Firemist®, Glacier™, Magnapearl® and Lumina®, as well as products that support label-free environmentally friendly coatings.
Decking and timber
Coatings used for decking and timber substrates need to be durable and display excellent weathering properties, especially in outdoor applications. By enabling the formulation of coatings that are less susceptible to heat degradation, we have given architects and designers more freedom to achieve the individualized effects they want without compromising the performance or lifespan of the coating. BASF's Microlith® pigment preparations offer a wide choice of color options with excellent durability, transparency and light fastness. Our transparent iron oxides and carbon blacks within the Xfast®, Luconyl® NG and Sicofl ush® ranges provide the perfect solution for coloring fl ooring and decking or enhancing natural wood grains. BASF's Irgasperse® and Orasol® dyes can also be used to create the effect of expensive and desirable exotic woods such as bankirai or teak, and we produce a range of functional pigments and pigment preparations for specialist applications such as solar heat management.

in water-based coatings for wooden substrates improve color fastness and increase durability while extending their life cycle and reducing their carbon footprint. We have also succeeded in closing the performance gap between water- and solvent-based preparations.
BASF has developed innovative functional pigments and pigment preparations that make it possible to formulate more heat-resistant coatings, even for dark surfaces. This both reduces the demands on the coating itself and creates energy saving benefi ts as a result of the reduced need for cooling.
As environmental considerations continue to increase in prominence across world markets, we have been quick to respond by creating high-quality products that meet the new regulations without compromising performance. For example, our label-free Luconyl® NG and Xfast® ranges are both VOC- and APEO-free while also conforming to the GHS 2015 standard. Xfast® is totally solvent-free, free-fl owing, low-dusting and almost entirely waste-free, with no residue left behind in the packaging. Both ranges have an optimized pigment concentration to fulfi ll market requirements.
We are also developing technologies with clean ecotox profi les and extending our search for sustainable and renewable raw materials, right through the supply chain. To further reduce the use of VOC, we are developing new solutions that will increasingly replace our solvent-based coatings with environmentally friendly technologies such as water-based or UV-curable coatings. It is not just dark surfaces that benefi t from this technology: traditional carbon black can be found in almost all coating shades. By using BASF’s functional black pigments in place of traditional solutions, the same shades can be achieved but with considerably greater resistance to heating up when exposed to sunlight. This reduces internal building temperatures and saves CO2 emissions as a result of the reduced need for cooling.
Dark surfaces exposed to sunlight heat up by absorbing incident sunlight and converting it into heat, while light surfaces refl ect more of the incoming energy. BASF’s advanced Paliogen® and Sicopal® functional black pigments prevent this from happening. These pigments can also be found in solid or liquid preparation form, as Xfast® and Luconyl NG®.
Carbon black, the most commonly used black pigment, strongly absorbs the invisible near-infrared (NIR) radiation that accounts for more than 50 percent of the total incident solar energy. In contrast, our ‘cool’ black pigments refl ect or transmit the same radiation with very low levels of absorption. But because they swallow up the visible light completely, just like any conventional black pigment, the optical impression of blackness is preserved.
For carbon black, the Total Solar Refl ectance (TSR) is typically less than 5 percent. By using Paliogen® Black or Sicopal® Black or corresponding pigment preparations, TSR values in excess of 30 % can be achieved, even for black or very dark colors. In practical terms, this improved TSR performance can result in a surface temperature reduction of up to 15 °C.
Cool colors for hot daysSolar heat management in paints and coatings
Drivers who can't fi nd a shady parking spot in summer know what to expect: they come back to fi nd the black instrument panel, seats and steering wheel unbearably hot. Initially developed for the needs of the automotive industry, our cooling solution for dark surfaces has also proved invaluable for architectural and construction coatings.
