The word “education” is often used to refer to formal education -- teaching and learning of values and knowledge that take place in schools or school-like environments. However, people receive informal education from a variety of sources. Family members, peers, books and mass media all play a part in the informal education of an individual.

Key Because between the covers of all those books were whole new worlds, and I was free to go anywhere in them.
When I was in the fifth grade, my marks in school were miserable and,
what was worse, I didn’t know enough to really care. My older brother and I
lived with Mom in an old house in Detroit. We watched TV every night. After
supper, what we would do was sit on Mom’s bed and stare for hours at the
TV set.
But one day Mom changed our world forever. She turned off the TV.
Our mother had only been able to get through third grade. But she was
much brighter and smarter than we boys knew at the time. She had noticed
something in the suburban houses she cleaned -- books. So she came
home one day, switched off the TV, sat us down and explained that her
sons were going to make something of themselves. “You boys are going to
read two books every week,” she said. “And you’re going to write me a
report on what you read.”
The World of Books
We complained about how unfair this was. Besides, we didn’t have any
books in the house other than Mom’s Bible. But she explained that we
would go where the books were: “I’ll drive you to the library.”
So pretty soon there were these two reluctant boys sitting in her white
Oldsmobile on their way to Detroit Public Library. I wandered among the
children’s books. I loved animals, so when I saw some books that seemed
to be about animals, I started leafing through them.
The first book I read clear through was Chip the Dam Builder. It was
about beavers. For the first time in my life I was lost in another world. No
television program had ever taken me so far away from my surroundings as
did this “visit” to a cold stream in a forest and these animals building a
home.
What I was reading was difficult for me to understand at the time, but
the experience was quite different from watching TV. There were images
forming in my mind instead of before my eyes. And I could return to them
again and again with the flip of a page.
Soon I began to look forward to visiting the public library. I moved from
animals to plants, and then to rocks. Between the covers of all those books
were whole new worlds, and I was free to go anywhere in them. Along the
way a funny thing happened: I started to know things. What happened next
was that the teachers started to notice it, too. I got to the point where I
couldn’t wait to get home to my books.

School system is one of the biggest challenges in the next decade for the United States. The challenge is not one of expansion, or using schools to solve social problems, but a demand for performance from the employers who will value abilities more than degrees, and a demand from students and parents for an all-level quality education developing students’ skills. Many young people now are already switching to practical subjects like medicine and accounting. The continuing professional education may be the fastest growing industry in America today. In the meantime, new opportunities for diversity may pose the greatest challenge to education.

One of the reasons why lifelong education has become so important is the fast progress of science and technology. It seems that the knowledge and skills we learn from schools are not sufficient for a professional career spanning three or four decades. But it is never too late to learn.People at all ages can learn at work, at home and through leisure activities, not just through formal channels such as schools.

Directions: Look at the cartoon about lifelong learning (LL) and give a talk about it. You should:1) interpret the meaning of the cartoon; 2) talk about your own understanding of lifelong learning.
Demo:
The cartoon shows that lifelong learning, a concept promoting equal learning opportunities for everyone, despite their age, race, and social status, has its social and economic benefits. It will first benefit the individual who keeps on learning since people who are willing to invest time and effort in learning always hold a positive attitude toward future, and can usually have a better life based on continuous self-improvement. With more people having a learning attitude, there will be more efforts contributed to building a harmonious community, finding solutions to social problems, and increasing productivity, which will benefit both society and economy.

Demo:
The pictures show children at different ages from different societies are enjoying quality time with their family. Through time spent with their family, children are actually having an informal education, supplementary to the formal education taking place at schools. So family plays an indispensable role in one’s education. It could be long before school age that children are initiated into the wonderland of books, knowledge and some special skills, usually by their family. Family education is also effective in teaching children how to understand others, take responsibility and make decisions in relation to society as a whole, in which family is a foundation.
