HomE DEsIgNMy preferred style is contemporary – simple, with dramatic accents to add character. for example, i’m fond of lighting that gives a special effect on metallic wallpaper.
go-to stoREsOur multibrand concept store, Aati, presents some of the world’s leading names in premium and contemporary designer furniture and accessories. My personal favourites include fendi – for its dramatic and fashionable elegance – as well as Ralph lauren, for its transitional flair guaranteed to add character and warmth to any home.
sHoP foR wALLPAPER At…elitis. they offer a great variety, and are very stylish – it’s one of my favourite brands. it’s so important to pick the right paper when you’re trying to create a specific environment in the home.
fAVoURItE PAINt stoREJotun, for the incredible selection and plethora of shades.
BEst HomE BUyi love my Michael Aram golden marble cheese board, which gets compliments whenever i entertain guests at home.
INVEstmENt woRtHyi would recommend spending on a beautiful chandelier – whether your taste is traditional or modern. it creates
a centrepiece to spark dinner party conversation, and adds a wonderful, chic accent to your living room. A stunning statement coffee or dining table adds life to a room as well, especially if your couch is a solid neutral tone.
INtERIoR tIPOpt for neutral core pieces, and add character and splashes of colour with a mix of statement accessories. these can be changed as often as your mood, having the effect of revamping and refreshing the entire room. Personally i like a mix of gold and silver with a few colour accents.
oNLINE sHoPPINgKelly Hoppen offers great wall coverings and accessories.
sAVE oNRugs. they get easily worn out, and need to be changed relatively often.
oN tHE wIsHLIsti’m an avid collector of special pieces and sculptures from Michael Aram and l’Objet. Right now i’m keen to add the Minotti Bellagio white marble-topped lounge table to my collection. it’s perfect for small, intimate dinners at home with my husband.

kitchenThe retro Lydia Danos design from Hacker, offers low cabinetry with drawers and pull-outs. This makes the space light and airy. The strong maritime pine finish in the base cabinets contrasts well with the striking white tall cabinetry, while the lowered bar area in a different colour Silestone offsets the pure white of the kitchen tops. The ceiling mounted extractor is the perfect solution if you don’t want to obstruct your view with a chimney style hood. Parador LVT flooring makes the space appear larger, while uniting the areas. how to: CREATE YOUR OWN YOGA SANCTUARY
nifty ideas to put your sk i l ls to the test
CHOOSe THe riGHT SpaCeIt’s important to practice in a room that is quiet, and away from disturbance. If you are going to build a room, try to make sure it receives an abundance of natural light – for Vitamin D – and is on a flat surface, for balancing postures to root down into the earth.
De-CluTTerYour tranquil, meditation zone should be a heavenly retreat. Lots of clutter can make the space too busy, so it’s important to remove distractions and convert the space to a blank canvas, before filling it in.
Keep CalM WiTH COlOurMuted, cool tones or warm whites are apt for a yoga zone. The aim is to keep the space as minimal, and neat as possible. Choose non-toxic, VOC-free
paints for the room, so that you feel great about going eco-friendly, and nurturing yourself and the environment – an integral part of yoga.
DiM THe liGHTSHave you ever stepped into an extremely bright yoga room? It’s important to install the right lighting, as it has a huge impact on your mood and well-being. Install dimmer switches on overhead lights. If the room has windows, use lightweight cotton drapes to help filter light and privacy, while adding softness to the space. You can also consider hanging lanterns to give it an elegant touch.
FlOOrinG eSSenTialSA soft, but sturdy yoga mat is an essential, but you can also change the
floor tiles to wooden panels if you like. This makes the room look and feel cosy. A designated yoga/meditation spot can help you cultivate awareness, as you practice on a daily basis in the same room. You will start to notice the difference in things that surround you – the air quality through the seasons, shift in light, and of course welcoming of new thoughts.
pleaSanT SCenTSCandles, incense, or aromatherapy sprays can lift your mood, put you at ease, and give the space a warm, friendly vibe. The yoga room should be a place you love to visit at the beginning or end of your day. Consider placing a shelf on the wall, or perhaps a little table with a candle, altar, and flowers.

With over seven bedrooms, four living rooms, and two dining areas, this Khalifa City villa is
bright, airy and roomy, with earthy tones bringing it all to life. “The colour scheme was inspired from the coastline of the Emirates, while the scenery of sunny sandy corniche was brought into the home,” says Indigo Living’s Interior Designer Narita Mangaran. Blue represents royalty, and gives the space a luxe, bold, and refined look that bonds together the theme perfectly. Narita tells us having a villa gives you the opportunity to play around with colours, while sticking to the monochrome concept throughout. “We’ve used various types of blues such as royal blue, teal, turquoise, and powder blue, accompanied by neutral colours such as beige, champagne gold, pearl, and off-white.”
Both the majlises boast white couches, and these areas are exclusively for the couple’s guests. Separating the lounge area, and TV room are quite common in the UAE. The lounge is used as a
A home is only complete when you add in accessories
breakfast nook, or place to unwind after dining, however there isn’t a partition in between the two areas, fusing two set-ups into one expansive space.
Most will agree a home is only complete when you add in accessories. Naturally Narita looked to her own brand for their extensive selection on offer. “We used a lot of statement pieces such as the globe, chess boards, vases, candleholders, sculptures and novelty items. The lamps are decorative and at the same time, lend an ambient mood to every room,” she says. Textures create harmony and balance, while preventing the space from looking too monochromatic, and this is seen with drapes and rugs integrating materials into the home. “A rug completes a room. It pulls everything together, and acts as background for the furniture and accessories, while making the room cosier,” says Narita. In true regal sense, the home not only exudes sophistication, but also makes a great spot for the family to come together and entertain friends at gatherings.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT CITYSCAPE
ABU DHABI 2016?
C ityscape Abu Dhabi 2016 is the place to head to for the latest in
property developments, to network, and get information on the real estate market, from the developers themselves. To touch upon the current situation of the market, David Dudley, International Director at JLL MENA says while the impact of reduced oil prices on the economy will lead to a short-term slowdown in demand, this is occurring at a time of minimal supply completions leading to relatively stable market conditions. “The market experienced a major upswing from 2013 to 2014, led by the residential sales market, with prime residential prices growing at 25% per annum. This pace of growth was unsustainable,” he says, while clarifying

the market is in its correction stage and not experiencing a crash.
Those attending the exhibition, now in its 10th year of operation, will be able to attend the Abu Dhabi market overiew panel, as part of Cityscape Abu Dhabi Conference taking place on the first day of the show. One such is the spotlight on Abu Dhabi’s most recent economic drivers, its residential market capacity, and the impact the potential oil freeze output deal may have on the real estate sector. The effect of the recently implemented Regulation of Real Estate Sector in Abu Dhabi (the Property Law) on financing and mortgage enforcement will be one of the core topics discussed at the conference.
Key developers and financial
institutions will take part at this year’s event, with new participants including Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA&T) and Urban Planning Council (UAE), SAPST (Morocco), Garanti Koza (Turkey), and returning brands such as Aldar Properties, Eagle Hills Properties, Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), Bloom Properties, Masdar, Manazel, Eshraq, Wahat al Zaweya and Mubadala, and more.

Spotlight OnThe Iittala and Issy Miyake collaboration embodies everything chic we want for our homes. The latest home collection features 30 items comprising textiles, ceramics and glass, in a plethora of colours – which mimic spring and blossoming flowers – and delicate, minimal design 3D shapes. Most of the pieces are in line with the design language of Japan and Finland, and come together beautifully to fuse cultures, materials, and aesthetics. “The continuous research and development in clothes making of Issey Miyake is now crystalised in the collaboration project with Iittala. The textile items are created using not only the latest technology to fold and pleat the material but also the delicate handwork. The pentagon suggests a non-daily element,” says Midori Kitamura, President of Miyake Design Studio. Available at Jashanmal.
