Located in Baku’s planned cultural plaza district, the five-storey Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre features a
conference hall, three auditoriums, a library and
a museum.
The Heydar Aliyev Center is a building complex in Baku, Azerbaijan designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid and noted for its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles. The center is named for Heydar Aliyev, the leader of Soviet-era Azerbaijan from 1969 to 1982, and president of Azerbaijan from October 1993 to October 2003
The outdoors area is filled with gazelle sculptures that were painted by different artists from all around the world. It is quite interesting to see how the same form and surface can be transformed into something unique by touch of every artist
The building opened in May 2012 to mark
the 89th birthday of
Heydar Aliyev – the country’s
Soviet-era ruler who became its
president in 1993
The fluid, organic curves of this 100,000 sq m (120,000
sq yd) creation - the work of
leading London-based Iraqi-
British architect Zaha Hadid - is
a visual standout even in this city of
towering, landmark new-build projects
Heydar Aliyev, who died in 2003, chaired Azerbaijan’s KGB for more than 20 years and was blamed for human rights violations in the later years of his post-Soviet presidency by Amnesty International
On June 21, 2013, the Center held the opening of the exhibition
of works by American artist
Andy Warhol titled “Life, Death, and
Beauty” supervised by
Gianni Mercurio, dated for the
85th anniversary of the artist
The centre was designed to become a primary space for Azerbaijan’s cultural programs and events, and take a significant place in the urban landscape of modern Baku
The 1,000-seat auditorium in architect Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre in Baku, echoes the building’s curvaceous exterior, but the use of backlit oak paneling bathes the room in a warm glow that contrasts with the stark white walls used throughout most of the complex.
The Flowers that Blossom Tomorrow composition (2012) by Yayoi Kusama, an outstanding Japanese artist and a pop legend, is now on a permanent display at the Heydar Aliyev Center.
The artist’s Abstraction No.2 (1959) sold for 5,794,500 US dollars at Christie’s New York in 2008 to become the most expensive piece of modern art and the then record for a living female artist.
