Mrs. Franoise-Hlne Jourda
I believe that the quality of an architectural piece
can affect its users in both advantageous and
disadvantegous ways. A building today has to
satisfy the needs and desires of everyone: those
who are in a hurry to their work but also those
who just visit and wander around; those who have a
good day and those who do not, those who are
healthy and those who are disabled.
The idea shown in my design at first glance
represents a complex form within the urban
structure. Originally, however, my plan was to
create this form with simplicity and profoundly
chiselled details. At the time of the designing
process I was also deeply involved with studying the
urban design and circumstances of the given locale.
I marked out a rough sketch on the map of this area
that could serve as the floor plan of the building.
This process had to respect the given conditions,
including the road system, subway lines and it it had
to fulfill the expectations. Onto this rough sketch I
drew section lines, which where numbered 1-14.
These fourteen places point out the sections of the
building. In this part, I put strong emphasis on
taking into consideration every small relation with
the surrounding neighborhood. For example, the
bridge designed by Otto Wagner became a central
monument in my design, and I respected its
importance throughout the process. This is clearly
seen on the sections that deal with this part of the
project. My structure grows thinner under the
bridge, it almost disappers, marking the dominant
forms of Wagner. My strategy worked out
successfully in this multi-layered location, because I
was always precisely able to correlate to the
existant buildings, to the Vienna river, to the
aforementioned bridge or the street network.
Afterwards, all these sections were connected toone another by a continuous surface. The
advantages of such surface reside in the tender
formal possibilities. In reality, these appear as
small-inclination ramps or pedestrian precincts. This
solution allows everyone to use the whole roof
structure unrestrictedly, for both passers-by and
wheelchair-users. Such bended surfaces enable the
growth and quality of public spaces, they offer an
opportunity for spontenaous functions. For example
these include the auditoriums necessary for
outdoor performances or sporting events. They are
placed on either the Community Centre or the Public
Common. Also, a resting area/sundeck can be
developed on the riverfront, or playgrounds of
interesting shapes and surfaces.
By changing the traffic circulation and
implementing the bulding structure into the city
landscape, a pleasent area will become along
Dunklergasse, free of noise, traffic and danger.
This island of safety I crave with the following
images in mind: elderly people, mothers with small
children everyone who needs peace and relaxation.
Unlike the energetic playgrounds and sportsfields
here serenity and tranquility would be of most
importance.
The calling for tender deeply engages in
the scale of the allotted functions. I have tried to
respect this expectation and place these functions
the most useful way. The outdoor fields and
playground are easily reachable from the
neighbouring streets and the subway stations. I
created a bridge that stretches out from t he
intersection of Linke Wienzeile and Stiegerbrucke.
You can either walk on the upper surface it or inside
it. The meeting clubs, skills, arts and crafts
area outside of the community building can be
safely reached by pedestrians, or bikers.

Mr. Wolfgang Kremser
I would like to explain my idea of this urban structure to you and everyone who is
sight-impaired through the experiences I went through the process of bulding up the
physical model. For weeks, I was touching and paddling my models during the whole day, in
order to gain the maximum amount of information about them and perfect my knowledge on
them. I created a city model in scale 1:500, where I left the bulding site empty. I kept onstudying, as I mentioned sometimes with my fingers, the surrounding houses, the Wagner
bridge, the complicated road network and the relation between the river and the site. A
significant part of this course was the generating procedure according to the top view
sketches and the local solutional sections. These sectioned solved a lot of problems due to
their position. The interesting phase of my work was the next step: when I connected these
sections with a coherent surface. The original sections were built up from an angulat
line so we would have ended up in touching acute and obtuse angles. On the other hand ,
the contra-direction, namely the sections linked with the surface form a soft, fluid shape.
This idea was was realized in a three-dimensional print I am talking about this now. This is
the way this building works out from the inside as well. The interior spaces are sharp and
angular from one side, but they remind the visitor of a fluid, tender aggregate from the
other direction. If we created a small-scale model, you would we able to touch and
experience the space both from inside and outside. Touching the model would give you the
same impression every time: you would feel the soft shapes in the length of the structure,
and the other direction would consist of the usual, well-knows urban blocks. Accordingly,
there are no negative surprises within the area, there are no rough surface transitions
between the levels only subtly ascending ramps.

Mr. Joe Manser
The space and volume of the building allows the
tender, almost fluid fomal structure. This leads to
the advantage of easily approachable spaces inc. the
indoor areas, the surfaces and naturally, the
transition between the levels. Its use is
comfortable for the phisically-disabled people as
well. The most prominent direction in the structure
is the southwest-northeastern route. This direction
enables to create and form small-inclinational
ramps, thus the surface of the bulding enhanced
with functions is comfortably viable. Although this
structure is relatively narrow, making a U-turn with
the wheelchair is still doable. The only surface
designed with a stairway leading to it is the facade
above the petrol station and the fast food
restaurant.
