MAP OF U.S. AUTO SHREDDING PLANT LOCATIONS >>

When Recycling Today last published its U.S. auto shredder list in 2012, scrap processors in the na-tion reported shredding capacity additions, and competition for automobile hulks grew with the

total number of auto shredder installations. The intense com-petition described by processors at the time still is prevalent in the industry today.

More than 40 auto shredders have closed since Recycling Today last published its auto shredder list, which we update every two years. Of those closures, nearly 90 percent represent shredders with rotors measuring 104 inches in width.

We have identified 297 shredder installations in the U.S., two of which are idled temporarily. Five shredders not includ-ed in the total figure are proposed installations.

Including shredders located in Canada as well as in Mexico, the shredder count in North America jumps to 325.

The shredders running today range in size from relatively small, “mini” 1,000-horsepower models to 10,000-horsepower “mega” shredders. Sources say mini shredders are more com-monplace today, as the larger shredders typically did not run at 50 percent capacity, let alone at 100 percent capacity.

Two years ago, the U.S. auto shredder list topped the 300 mark, though seven of the plants included in that list were pro-posed installations for the upcoming year. More than 20 of the shredders listed in 2012 were idle at the time of publication, some of which have been shuttered completely since, while others are up and running again, largely because they were ac-quired by larger companies.

STATE BY STATETexas again tops the list in terms of the U.S. states with the largest number of auto shredders at 26, despite the fact that it lost four shredders to closures over the past two years, The cities of Brownsville and Houston each house three shredders.

With 16 shredder operations each, Ohio and Florida share the No. 2 spot in terms of number of auto shredders currently in operation. The Ohio cities of Canton, Columbus and Toledo each are home to two shredder installations.

Pennsylvania dropped to third place in 2014, with 15 shred-der locations.

New York state had the most shredder shut downs, with six shredders no longer in operation, while the Northeast saw the most regional closures, with 13 shredders shuttered.

In addition to Brownsville and Houston, Baltimore and Peoria, Illinois, also have three shredders running today, while 25 U.S. cities have two shredders in operation.

THE BIGGER THEY COMECONSTANT COMMITMENTOne factor contributing to the large number of shuttered shred-ders in the last two years, sources say, is the proliferation of auto shredder installations in recent years, further increasing overca-pacity and competition for available feedstock.

Danny Rifkin, CEO of MetalX LLC, Waterloo, Indiana, says several businesses attempted to grow their companies by invest-ing in a new shredder, without considering the associated costs and total investment involved in such a decision.

“It’s entering a business that takes a commitment other than buying a machine,” Rifkin says of the decision to add an auto shredder to a yard.

Consolidation is another factor contributing to shredder clo-sures, says steel industry veteran John Harris, CEO of Canada-based metals sector information service Aaristic Services Inc. Large steel operations have been buying shredding companies, shutting them down and directing their feedstock to other shred-ders they own, he explains.

A look at our 2014 auto shredder list shows various acquisi-tions by Gerdau, with North American headquarters in Tampa, Florida; David J. Joseph Co., Cincinnati; and SA Recycling LLC, based in Orange, California, among a number of other companies.

Chicago-based metals recycling company Scrap Metal Ser-vices (SMS), for example, purchased 360 Degree Metal Re-cycling’s auto shredder and full-service scrap metal facility in September 2014.

New Carlisle, Indiana-based 360 Degree Metal Recycling was included in our October 2012 feature on the auto shred-ding landscape, “Too Much of a Good Thing,” and owner Randy Schlipp had said at the time that the 80-by-104 American Pulver-izer shredder, including a downstream sorting system, his com-pany installed at a greenfield site would be a success.

Two years later, however, that shredder and yard have been acquired by SMS, which was founded in 2005 by Jeffry and Richard Gertler. SMS says the newly acquired facility is strategi-cally located, allowing the company to cost-effectively transport shredder feedstock, including vehicles and obsolete scrap, from its nine Northwest Indiana and Chicago retail facilities and auto parts operations.

FIERCE COMPETITIONIntense competition continues to affect business, sources say. Taking in heavier steel scrap as well as additional types of mixed scrap and maintaining sophisticated shredders with nonferrous systems are valuable steps to take to increase the capabilities of existing shredders, according to sources.

As competition for feedstock continues to be intense, some auto shredders are changing hands, while smaller shredders have become more prevalent.
