THE BARBED-WIRE UNIVERSITY The Social Life of the WW2 Prisoner-of-War Camp
Midge Gillies
The conventional picture of Allied POWs in the World War II prisoner-of-war campstends to be restricted to escape attempts (Colditz and The Great Escape) or terriblebrutality (the Far Eastern camps and Bridge on the River Kwai). But what did the menreally do all day?
In fact, British prisoners showed the most amazing ingenuity and determination toturn their camp into a hive of every kind of activity. Whole golf courses were laid out inthe exercise yard; many postwar theatre names began their careers in extravagant dragas the stars of prisoner productions; and days spent watching birds beyond theperimeter fence became definitive monographs on avian behaviour.
Midge Gillies’ extensive research and interviews have produced a remarkable work ofsocial history which will genuinely redefine our picture of the camps and leave us withrenewed admiration for the initiative, creativity and fortitude of men in wartime captivity.
Midge Gillies is the author of a biography of Amy Johnson and Waiting for Hitler, aboutBritain on the brink of war. She lives in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

THE SPADE IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORDThe Story of the Wartime Dig for Victory Campaign
Daniel Smith
After the introduction of food rationing in 1940, and when German U-boats targetingmerchant shipping threatened the availability of essential foodstuffs, the Ministry ofAgriculture decided something had to be done to make the kitchens of Britain moreself-sufficient.
The result was one of Britain’s most successful propaganda campaigns – Dig forVictory – encouraging every man and woman to turn their garden, or even the grassverge in their street, over to cultivating vegetables.
Now, for the first time, Daniel Smith tells the full story of this remarkable wartimeepisode when spades, forks and bean canes became weapons the ordinary citizencould take up against the enemy. It’s a war story without fighting or killing, one thatshows how even The Little Man with the Spade, in the words of the government at thetime, did his bit for Victory.
Daniel Smith is author of the Sherlock Holmes Companion, also published by Aurum, and The Lucky Bugger’s Casebook.

BEACON FOR CHANGEHow the 1951 Festival of Britain Shaped the Modern Age
Barry Turner
As the 2012 Olympics sets about remaking a whole swathe of east London, BarryTurner’s book marks the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, which did the verysame for London’s South Bank after the war.
In 1951, the Festival sought not only to celebrate the best of Britishness but also toset new standards and paradigms for modern design, aesthetics and architecture. Withsatellite festivals all over Britain, it attracted 8 million visitors in a single year. TheRoyal Festival Hall, the Dome of Discovery (then the largest unsupported roof in theworld), and the long-lamented Skylon (a futuristic aluminium pylon) were all builtwhen the South Bank was cleared of its industry and Victorian buildings.
As well as nostalgic appeal the story constitutes a kind of sequel to DavidKynaston’s Austerity Britain, as the Festival gave the British people permission to enjoythemselves and look forward at last to a future of modernity and prosperity.
Barry Turner is also the author of Aurum’s Outpost of Occupation, about the wartimeoccupation of the Channel Islands.

SCORCHED EARTH, BLACK SNOWThe First Year of the Korean War
Andrew Salmon
Scorched Earth, Black Snow is the second major work on the Korean War by the authorof To the Last Round, his acclaimed history of the battle of Imjin River.
The first year of the Korean War was a tumultuous series of epic battles, ending in alegendary and harrowing retreat. In the summer of 1950, British and Australian troopswere dispatched to fight alongside UN forces in the savage struggle againstcommunism in Korea. After a spectacular run of battles, victory beckoned. But whenChina launched a shock counter-offensive, British soldiers endured a lacerating 200-mile ‘bug out’ to escape. Across the peninsula in ‘Hellfire Valley’, in conditions colderthan Stalingrad, British and Australian troops together with US Marines faced the mostnightmarish battle of some fifty years at Chosin Reservoir. They avoided annihilation bya hair’s breadth.
Featuring dozens of new interviews with veterans, this is the untold story of themost desperate days of that ‘forgotten’ war – in the words of the men who came home.
Andrew Salmon is a Seoul-based journalist for The Times, the South China MorningPost and Forbes. To the Last Round, also published by Aurum, won the HampshireLibraries Military History Prize.

WHO’S THAT GIRL?The Autobiography of Elisabeth Sladen
Elisabeth Sladen

THE MAN WHO INVENTED THEDALEKSThe Strange Worlds of Terry Nation
Alwyn W. Turner
Terry Nation was one of the most successful and prolific writersfor television and radio that Britain ever produced. His vision ofa post-apocalyptic England, Survivors, has been re-made thirty
years on, Blake’s 7 endures as a cult sci-fi classic, and his most famous creations, theDaleks, ensured, and at times eclipsed, the success of Doctor Who.
But while those alien ‘pepperpots’ remain at the core of his appeal, Nation also hada role to play in the early days of radio and television comedy – as part of the legendaryAssociated London Scripts, he wrote for Spike Milligan, Tony Hancock and FrankieHowerd – and he became a key figure in the internationally successful adventure seriesof the 1960s: The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders!
This is the first serious, mainstream account of Terry Nation’s life and contributionto British television and will shed light on a fascinating melting pot of ambitious youngwriters, producers and performers without whom British culture today would look verydifferent.
Alwyn W. Turner is the author of Crisis? What Crisis?: Britain in the 1970s, Rejoice!Rejoice!: Britain in the 1980s, and The Biba Experience.
‘Turner may be an anorak, but he is anacutely intelligent anorak’ Francis Wheen

SUBDUED MAGICA Life of Raymond Chandler
Tom Williams
To describe a book as Chandleresque is instantly to conjure a particular world. A worldof violence; of mean streets trodden by lonely, hard-drinking private detectives; ofshady bars inhabited by dangerous femmes fatales – women with the kind of bodiesthat would make a bishop kick out a stained glass window. It is the world left to us byRaymond Chandler – the writer who, more than any other, defined modern fiction.
Now, comes a major new biography of one of the twentieth century’s most popular, influential and enduring literary figures. Beautifully written and featuring a wealth oforiginal research, Tom Williams’ fascinating book covers Chandler’s isolatedupbringing, his little-known war record, growing problems with alcoholism, troubledrelationships with women and the origins of the prose, the characters, the plots andthe haunting noirish world that transformed popular culture for ever.
Tom Williams is a writer and journalist living in north London. He has previously writtenfor the Observer and the Spectator, and is a protégé of John Sutherland whose sharedpassion for Chandler, and abandoned biography of the novelist, inspired Tom toembark on this book.

ENGLAND’S LOST HOUSESfrom the Archives of Country Life
Giles Worsley
Of all the photographs in Country Life’s extensive archive, none are more hauntingthan the images of houses that no longer exist. For the first time, these stunningphotographs have been gathered together to provide a powerful impression of therichness and variety of the lost English country house. The buildings are surprisinglyeclectic but uniformly gorgeous, from the Restoration gem Uffington House to theRococo magnificence of Nuthall Temple.
This is more than just a eulogy to lost treasures; it is also a study and an explanationof the historical contexts that led to the loss of these paragons of England’sarchitectural heritage.
The story of the English country house becomes increasingly fascinating over thepast hundred years. From their wanton destruction, through the realisation andappreciation of their cultural value, to the protected status they enjoy today. England’sLost Houses will be essential reading for all those who wish to see a clear picture of the past.
Giles Worsley, who died in 2006, was the architecture correspondent of the DailyTelegraph, architectural editor of Country Life and editor of Perspectives on Architecture.

THE SPORT OF KINGS, QUEENS ANDFOUR-LEGGED ATHLETESThe Book of Horse Racing
Edited by Martin Smith
It is the Sport of Kings. And Queens. And Lords and their Ladies. It is also the sport ofknaves, bounders and cheats. Moreover it’s the sport of the ordinary man: fromhousewives with their 50p to bet on whichever horse Frankie Dettori is riding in theDerby, to anyone who has entered the office Grand National sweepstake.
Horse racing is a massive commercial industry with a multi-million pound turnoverin betting, breeding and prize-money. But it is also a fun day out, whether it be thesplendour of Royal Ascot, Epsom dolled up for the Derby, Cheltenham rocking to theIrish enjoying the craic, or the homeliness of the most humble country course.
The Sport of Kings, Queens and Four-legged Athletes relives racing’s greatestmoments through the passion and authority of the sports pages’ true thoroughbreds:John Oaksey, Brough Scott, J.A. McGrath, Marcus Armytage, Peter Scott, Paul Hayward, the anonymous Hotspurs and Marlboroughs, as well as jockeys Peter Scudamore,Frankie Dettori, Johnny Murtagh, Tony McCoy and Lester Piggott offering their ownparticular view from the saddle.
Martin Smith was Assistant Sports Editor of The Daily Telegraph for many years.

CRICKET LETTERS TO THE Edited by Martin Smith
The Daily Telegraph has always been the sport fan’s paper of choice, and now for thefirst time the best cricket correspondence received has been collected in hardbackform. Packed full of wit and wry observation, it’s the ideal gift for cricket fans. This firstcollection of the finest letters written to the paper over the years ranges in subject fromBodyline to helmets, and from swing bowling to sunglasses.
Martin Smith was for many years deputy sports editor of The Daily Telegraph and hasedited several Telegraph anthologies including The Daily Telegraph Book of Formula 1and the The Daily Telegraph Book of the Tour de France.
Sir – I could not help a smile when I readan article in the sports page by yourexpert analyst Simon Hughes (May 15).He wrote: ‘If you look at footage of pre-war Test cricket, most batsmen lingeredon the back foot dabbing and nurdlingthe ball against wily trundlers onpitches barely discernible from theoutfield. The sun never shone [how didhe know?]
‘This strip [for England's matchagainst Sri Lanka at Lord's earlier thismonth] is firm and trustworthy and onlytinged with green, but some of the olddobbers – a Shackleton or a Bedser –might have utilised the conditions well.’
I would point out to Simon Hughesthat one of those old ‘dobbers’ did goto Australia in 1950–51 and took 30wickets at 16.06 in five Tests – therewere no green tinges of green grassthere. In the next series the old‘dobber’, also against Australia in fiveTest matches, did take 39 wickets at17.00 each. A matter of 69 wickets in 10consecutive games v Australia at lessthan 17.00 each. From 1950 to 1953 thisold ‘dobber’ did take 121 Test wicketsin 21 Tests at 18.16 each. Not bad for anold ‘dobber’. Perhaps we might findanother one somewhere. The sun didshine in those days, despite SimonHughes' comment. I don't suppose youranalyst saw the ‘dobber’ bowl – he'snot old enough to have done so.Alec Bedser,Woking, Surrey

STANDING MY GROUNDThe Autobiography of Matthew Hayden
Matthew Hayden
Matthew Hayden is one of the finest players in Australia’s all-conquering Test cricketside of the last decade, and this is his outspoken and revealing life story.
He was part of the team that narrowly lost the enthralling 2005 Ashes series inEngland, and then trounced England 5-0 back in Australia a year later. And while muchof the side’s success was due to Glenn McGrath’s seam-bowling and Shane Warne’sspin, Hayden’s opening partnerships with the equally flinty Justin Langer laid thebedrock of their many victories.
His autobiography features never-before-told inside stories of many famouscricketing series, including revelations about disunity and dysfunction within theAustralian camp during the 2005 series. It also offers fascinating first-hand testimonyof what it was like to play against greats of the game like Vivian Richards, and to facethe fearsome West Indies fast-bowling attack. Standing My Ground is also a casebookin the psychology of winning and doing your best: no sportsmen in the modern erahave been better at this than Ricky Ponting’s Australian Test side.

FROM LAST TO FIRSTHow Bottom-of-the-Class Became a World Class Marathon Runner
Charlie Spedding
Charlie Spedding describes himself as ‘not particularly talented’– at least, compared to the group of people he had chosen tofind himself among: the athletes in the Olympic marathon.
So how did he end up with a bronze medal? How did he win the London Marathon? Andwhy does he still hold the English record for the distance?
As well as the enthralling life story of one of our finest distance runners, this bookis a wonderfully clear and inspiring piece of life coaching for anyone who wants tomake the most of their talents. As Spedding says at the start, ‘I believe that onoccasions you can create the circumstances in which you can perform at a higher levelthan your talent says you can’. Spedding’s own story, and his chronicle of the big raceshe excelled in, proves it’s true.
Charlie Spedding is the English record holder for the marathon, a winner of the LondonMarathon, and the last British athlete to win an Olympic medal in the marathon.

CHRIS BRASHERThe Authorised Biography
John Bryant
One of the most remarkable – and controversial – figures in British sporting history,Chris Brasher piled unique achievement on unique achievement.
Together with Chris Chataway he paced Roger Bannister to break the 4-minute mileand in 1956 won Olympic Gold in the steeplechase. He founded the now-iconic LondonMarathon and pioneered the modern sports of fell-walking and orienteering. At theObserver, he effectively invented modern sports feature writing, and as if all thatwasn’t enough, he created the now-ubiquitous Brasher walking boot, which madeonce-heavy hiking boots as comfortable as training shoes.
But Brasher was also irascible and domineering – a good friend but a bad enemy –and a man who had to win in everything he did.
Now, John Bryant, who was a close friend of Brasher, has written the extraordinarystory of this impossible and amazing man’s life.
John Bryant was formerly editor of the Daily Telegraph, and is the author of books onthe London Marathon and the 4-minute mile. He lives in London.

THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVALA Centenary History

It is a story of legendary horsessuch as Arkle, Desert Orchid and Best Mate; of the craic and of the characters – like theIrishman who won enough on Istabraq to pay off his mortgage, lost it again on theChampion Chase, and reflected, ‘Ach, it was only a small house anyway …’

THE FINEST WINES OF CALIFORNIAStephen Brook MW
Foreword by Hugh Johnson OBE
The fourth in Aurum’s award-winning Finest Wines series is the definitive new guide tothe world’s largest and most misunderstood wine region.
The wines of California each have a unique personality and style, which arises froma culture very different from that of most other wine regions. Whilst the area has abundant sunshine, the distinctive character of the wines comes from other elements, mainly the maritime influence or the elevation of the vineyards. Californian wines alsobenefit from the industry’s lack of regulation which allows a grower to grow what hewants where he wants, and use any grapes that he likes. This freedom has led to theswift evolution and diversification of the industry there.
Stephen Brook has identified California’s top 90 producers and the book features alavish illustrated profile for each. Authoritative, bang up-to-date, and full of fascinatingfacts, this essential guide is required reading for all wine lovers and makes a handsomepresent.
Stephen Brook MW is the recipient of numerous awards for his wine writing, includingthe André Simon, Glenfiddich, Lanson and Veuve Clicquot.

MILE BY MILE ON BRITAIN’SRAILWAYSThe LNER, LMS, GWR and Southern Railway in 1947
S.N. Pike
Back in 1947 someone called S.N. Pike – we know next to nothing about him –published three little pamphlets, each mapping in forensic detail one of Britain’smainline rail routes. Now Aurum reissues all three in one handsome volume – adding afourth in the same style (Pike never got around to the GWR) to complete the set.
The books are full of period interest – the East Coast line, for example, still goespast Alexandra Park racecourse, sees a tangle of colliery sidings all the way up throughYorkshire, and passes 20 places where ‘GPO mailbag catching nets are erected close tothe rails’. When today’s high-speed trains swish to Paris so fast that the landscapebeyond is a blur, this delightful book reminds us of what once could be seen at leisureon a long railway journey.

THE VW CAMPER VANA Biography
Mike Harding
Invented in the aftermath of World War Two in a German military vehicle factory, theVolkswagen Camper van has escaped its military origins to become the embodiment offreedom and the open road, adored by hippies the world over. It’s also the first choicefor couples and families seeking a cheap camping holiday with wheels attached. Sonever mind the oddly off-centre steering wheel or the vagaries of the air-cooled rearengine: the VW Camper van has become more than a vehicle – it has truly become away of life.
Mike Harding’s first ride in a Volkswagen Camper van was back in 1961. Finally, in2009, he could wait no longer, and bought his own.
Combining the endless curiosity of the author of eight monographs on churcharchitecture, and the hilarious sense of humour of one of Britain’s best stand-upcomics, this biography is a wonderful social history of the postwar years through theprism of a single transport icon.
Mike Harding presents a weekly show on folk music on BBC Radio 2. His other booksfor Aurum are his Little Books on church iconography and A Guide to Tying NorthCountry Flies.

SHADOWPLAYERSThe Rise and Fall of Factory Records
James Nice
Introduction by Jon Savage
Definitive and comprehensive, this is the actual storyof Factory Records’ Peter Saville
In 1978, a ‘Factory for Sale’ sign gave Alan Erasmus andTony Wilson a name for their fledgling Manchester clubnight. Though they couldn’t have known it at the time, this was the launch of one of the most significantmusical and cultural legacies of the late twentiethcentury. The club’s live scene soon translated to vinyl, and Factory Records went on to become the mostinnovative and celebrated record label of the next thirty years. Shadowplayers is themost complete and authoritative account of how a group of provincial anarchists andentrepreneurs created the most influential record label of modern times.
James Nice is an author, journalist and record-label owner. He once worked forFactory Benelux and now administers much of the former Factory catalogue.

REJOICE! REJOICE!Britain in the 1980s
Alwyn Turner
‘Loved Alwyn Turner’s Rejoice! Rejoice! [it] not onlyre-creates the weird world of the Falklands war, theminers strike, alternative comedy and the Filofax, butfinds room for Mike Gatting, Zola Budd and To TheManor Born’ New Statesman
This is the first full-length, in-depth history of this mostfascinating of decades. If the Seventies were the lastgasp of the old Britain, the Eighties were a truly transi-tional, politically revolutionary decade, whenThatcherism remade Britain’s economy and its society, but when Britain’s social fabric also changed in many infinitely more encouraging ways, such as the response to famine in Ethiopia, Live Aid and gay rights.
Witty, formidably well-informed on political intrigue as well as every last soap operaand rock album, this is a piece of genuinely new history.
Alwyn Turner is the author of Crisis? What Crisis?: Britain in the 1970s and Cult RockPosters, both published by Aurum, as well as The Biba Experience. He lives in London.
