Note to Students
The School is required to submit Assessment Marks to the Board of Studies for all HSC courses (other than VET Hospitality and VET Information Technology). The assessment marks have an equal Weighting with the HSC exam mark in the calculation of the University Admissions Index.
The aim of Assessment is to test skills that cannot be measured in conventional exams and to remove the emphasis from a single exam period in determining your HSC marks.
Schedules are also included for Hospitality and Information Technology. These are not assessment schedules. They are included to provide information about how your Board of Studies estimate is determined. In Hospitality and Information Technology, your HSC mark is based solely on the HSC examination. The estimate will only be used in case of illness or misadventure.
Please read the HSC assessment policy carefully. It provides more information on Assessment, and also sets out the responsibilities of students and the School. You should also read the sections on assessment on pages 37 and 38 of the 2008 College Diary.
An assessment planner is included. This shows all assessment items. Sheets for each course, showing the tasks and the week in which they are due are included.
Tasks may not be split. If stages of a task are to be submitted and these are assessable at these stages then these due dates must be listed as separate tasks. If you are asked to complete an “assessable task” that is not one of the tasks listed, you should advise the Director of Curriculum (or if they are unavailable) the Assistant Head of College – Senior School immediately. You should also receive information for each task giving the due date and providing other details at least two weeks before the due date or the date on which the task occurs (other than Mid Year and Trial exams).
An effort has been made to limit the number of tasks and to spread the due dates. However, there are still pressure periods. Students should plan to start tasks early and to complete them progressively to avoid last minute rushes. Often, getting started is the hardest part. If you are having difficulty in completing an Assessment seek advice early.
If you feel that you have been unfairly treated with regard to Assessment, or require advice on Assessment, please see your teacher, the relevant Head of Department or myself.
Greg Jones (Director of Curriculum) October 2008

ALL SAINTS’ COLLEGE HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE ASSESSMENT POLICY
HSC 2009
1. HSC SCHOOL (INTERNAL) ASSESSMENT
l.1 The Board of Studies requires the school to submit an assessment mark for each student in all Board Developed Courses. This is a mark out of 100 for 2 unit courses and out of 50 for 1 unit courses.
1.2 The object of internal assessment is to measure a wider range of student performance throughout the course than it is possible to measure by examination only. This system allows total student achievement to be measured, including oral/aural, practical skills and field work.
1.3 The assessment marks submitted by the school are moderated by the Board of Studies. This means that the marks are processed by the Board to reflect the pattern of marks received by the students in the Higher School Certificate Examination. This process is designed to address anomalies that may arise from the different marking standards and tasks which may be adopted by different schools. In general the top assessment mark in a course will be "pegged " to the same level as the top examination mark and the lowest assessment mark moved to the same value as the lowest examination mark with the intermediate marks adjusted to reflect the pattern of examination marks. The assessment rank order will not change - the student with the top assessment mark will receive the top moderated assessment mark. The moderated assessment mark and the examination mark contribute equally to a student's final Higher School Certificate mark in a course, including calculations relating to the University Admissions Index and the Board of Studies Merit List.
1.4 Assessment tasks may commence in Term 4 of Year 11 when HSC courses commence.
1.5 To meet the requirements of the Board, students must make a genuine attempt at tasks which contribute in excess of 50% of the available marks in a course. Students failing to meet this requirement will be liable to an 'N' determination which would mean that this course would not appear on their Higher School Certificate, nor contribute HSC units. Students must receive adequate warning of this possibility (see section 2.8).
2. OBLIGATIONS OF THE SCHOOL
2.1 The school is required to develop an assessment program for each course that reflects the components and weightings mandated by the Board of Studies.
2.2 Each student should receive a written statement regarding the method of assessment in each course studied, including an indication of the weighting and approximate date (the week in which the due date will fall) of each task.
2.3 Students should receive written notice of the precise timing of each assessment task at least two school weeks prior to the task. Examinations do not require separate notification.
2.4 For non-examination assessment tasks students are to be informed of the outcomes assessed in each task, and are to be provided with Performance Descriptions detailing the features of responses in the various mark bands (in line with examples provided by the Board of Studies).
2.5 All assessment tasks and exams will utilise the terms in the Board of Studies Glossary of key words for HSC Syllabuses (NSW HSC Assessment Support Document, BOS 1999) adhering strictly to the definitions provided in the Glossary.
H:\Assessment\2009 HSC collection of assessment schedules.docPage 4 of 38
A11 Saints' College HSC Assessment Policy (Continued) 2.6 Students should receive clear and timely feedback on their performance. This advice should indicate:
(i) the student's attainment in the task relative to outcomes (ii) the student's relative position within the school group.
Cumulative assessment marks are not available to students.
2.7 After the completion of the HSC external examinations students will be informed of their assessment ranking by the Board of Studies.
2.8 The College will provide written warning to parents if a student is in danger of receiving an 'N' Indication in a course. At least two course-specific warnings are required prior to final notification of an `N’ Determination. Students who have failed to satisfactorily attempt 25% of the total assessment will receive a warning letter, with a copy being sent to parents.
3. OBLIGATIONS OF THE STUDENT
3.1 In order to have studied a course satisfactorily, each candidate is expected to perform all the tasks which form part of the assessment program. Students are encouraged to submit all assessment tasks even i f they are late, as these can be included as work completed for the purposes of determining whether a candidate has fulfilled the requirements of the course.
3.2 Students must hand up assessment tasks at the start of the first lesson for that course on the due date unless otherwise directed by the teacher.
3.3 Failure to submit an assessment task by the due date and time, without valid reason, will result in a zero mark for that task. Students who miss in-class tasks without valid reason will also receive a zero mark. Valid reasons for failing to submit or be present for a task include illness, accident or other misadventure. A Doctor's Certificate will be required as evidence of illness. A note from parents cannot be accepted. Non-medical reasons for missing an assessment task should be referred to the Director of Curriculum and will only be supported if independent evidence is provided. Driving tests do not constitute a valid reason for missing an assessment task. Students who miss a tasks through illness or other misadventure may have the option of sitting an alternate task with the approval of the class teacher and relevant Head of Department or to receive an estimate but not both. This choice is to be made before attempting any alternate task.
3.4 Any foreseeable problem with regard to completing or being present for an assessment task should be made known to the teacher as early as possible. Students should endeavour to make medical appointments outside of timetabled lessons wherever possible.
3.5 Students who have been absent from school should find out if they missed any assessment notifications while finding out details of work that they have missed.
3.6 A student found to have been involved in malpractice, including cheating, collusion or plagiarism, in any assessment task may receive zero marks for part or all of the task. Other disciplinary action may also be taken by the School.
4. ASSESSMENT APPEALS
4.1 The Board of Studies sets down procedures for assessment appeals in cases where students consider that their rank order on completion of a course is incorrect. In such cases students should approach the Director of Curriculum to request a school review. Procedures to be followed by the school are set out in the Accreditation and Certification (ACE) Manual p.119.
4.2 In cases where students feel that an anomaly in their assessment ranking has not been addressed by a school review, there is provision for subsequent appeal to the Board.
4.3 If students feel they have been unfairly treated with regard to assessment matters during an HSC course they should approach the class teacher. Head of Department or Director of Curriculum.
Variations to this policy must be cleared with the Director of Curruculum
