Finishes according to BS EN 10088-2/10028-7
(1) Not all process routes and surface finishes are available for all steels(2) First digit 1 = hot rolled 2 = cold rolled(3) May be skin passed(4) One surface only, unless specifically agreed at the time of enquiry and order(5) Within each finish description, the surface characteristics can vary, and more specific requirements may
need to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser (eg. Grade of grit or surface roughness)
Stainless Steel - Sheet & Plate Surface Finishes
Suitable for parts which will be descaled or machined insubsequent production or for certain heat-resistingapplications.
The type of mechanical descaling, eg. Coarse grinding or shotblasting, depends on the steel grade and the product, and isleft to the manufacturer’s discretion, unless otherwiseagreed.
Usually standard for most steel types to ensure goodcorrosion resistance; also common finish for furtherprocessing. It is permissible for grinding marks to be present. Not as smooth as 2D and 2B.
Usually applied to steels with a scale which is very resistantto pickling solutions. May be followed by pickling.
Finish for good ductility, but not as smooth as 2B or 2R.
Most common finish for most steel types to ensure goodcorrosion resistance, smoothness and flatness. Also commonfinish for further processing. Skin passing may be by tensionlevelling.
Smoother and brighter than 2B. Also common finish forfurther processing.
Either hardened and tempered in a protective atmosphere ordescaled after heat treatment.
Grade of grit or surface roughness can be specified.Unidirectional texture, not very reflective.
Grade of brush or polishing belt or surface roughness can bespecified. Unidirectional texture, not very reflective.
Additional specific requirements to a ‘J’ type finish in orderto achieve adequate corrosion, resistance for marine andexternal architectural applications. Transverse R <0. micronsclean cut surface finish.
Mechanical polishing. Process or surface roughness can bespecified. Non-directional finish reflective with high degreeof image clarity.

ASD metal services has sales teams dedicated to the sign and sign components industries. Dueto the complexity of this industry we have a seperate guide available, which your local salesteam will be able to provide. Within the contents of this guide you will be able to findeverything you require to fabricate a wide range of different sign applications - including ourspecialised product range.
All these products and services are easily accessible through our national network of sites aslisted on the UK map on pages 4/5.
Drawing on many years experience painting for the traffic and commercial sign industries, oneof our key strengths is our in-house Pre-Treatment and Powder Coating System at our dedicatedPaintline in Manchester. This has been approved by 3M for use in conjunction with their VHBTapes and Traffic Class Vinyls. A Quality Assured System to ISO 9000.
What is Pre-Painted Steel?
Coil coating is the most advanced technique for applying an organic coating (liquid or film) tosheet metal in a continuous process.
Since its inception in the early 1960’s the European coil coating industry has produced over 8billion square metres of pre-coated metals and its products are firmly established in marketssuch as construction, automotive, domestic appliances, heating and ventilation, packaging, office furniture, shelving, caravans, lighting, etc. The technology - based on a simple fact that itis easier to pre-coat a flat surface than post paint (spray, dip, etc) an irregular shape - isefficient, energy saving, up-to-date and environmentally friendly.
The Production Process
Coils of steel, i.e. Cold Reduced, Electro-Galvanised, Hot Dipped Galvanised, up to 30 tonnes inweight, are fed through purpose built lines, at speeds of up to 200 m/min, which chemicallypre-treat the substrate before applying an organic coating system to one or both sides of thestrip.
The resulting pre-coated material is a product of consistent quality, with excellent formability, corrosion and weathering resistance. The fully coated coil can be delivered to the fabricator inthis form, slit into narrow coils, or cut into sheets or precision blanks ready for use. A multitudeof colours, gloss levels, textures and patterns can be achieved with exceptional batch to batchconsistency.

Strength in DesignAs every engineer understands, geometry is as important as mechanical properties, it’s theflexibility of aluminium to take on more shape than steel that will deliver for the future. Theextrusion process offers light weight/height strength solutions to complex design problems andif fully applied can exceed expectations.
Product DevelopmentWe can assist with the development of new, or enhance existing, customer specificationprofiles. From conception to application we offer support with detailing your design andproviding drawings and samples prior to full production.
Value EngineeringMany 1st stage engineering features can be designed into your aluminium extrusion.
Screw ports, hinge details and bolt-head slots can become a feature of your assembly.
Reviewing how your extrusion interacts with other component parts, standard fixings/joiningmethods can be applied to save on welding, drilling, milling and assembly time and costs.
Added Value
We offer a cut to length service combined with painting, anodising and punching.

The surface has lost its ability to resist corrosion (the passive state) under the prevailing conditions.A softening heat treatment done to restore machinability or cold formability, usually following cold working.Solution annealing dissolves precipitated particles (e.g. carbides, sigma phase) to optimise corrosion resistance.A phase in the steel with the smallest building block of atomic structure of ‘face centred cubic’ (fcc) i.e. oneatom at the eight corners of a cube and one in the centre of each of the six faces. Austenitic stainless steelswith this structure include 1.4301 (304) and are characteristically non-magnetic.The first stage during the hardening / strengthening heat treatment or martensitic stainless steels. Normallyfollowed by a tempering treatment after cooling down to ambient temperatures. An annealing process done in a protective atmosphere to prevent surface tarnish or oxidation. A crackedammonia gas is usually used during bright annealing of strip (coil) at the steel mill. The resulting finish is 2R(BS EN 10088-2), often also known as BA.Methods of increasing the corrosion resistance of the surface, over a wider range of conditions, for example on316 types in some seawater applications. Impressed voltage methods are widely used, lowering the electrodepotential of the metal surface.Irons formed from chlorine (fluorine, bromine, iodine) atoms. Often corrosive when in solutions. Can be thecause of localised attack mechanisms such as crevice, pitting and stress corrosion cracking.Deformation (forming, machining) below the recrystallisation temperature of the steel, resulting in aprogressive increase in strength and hardness as more working is done.An electrochemical process where metal atoms are removed from the surface of the steel. Stainless steels havegood general corrosion resistance but can suffer from localised corrosion mechanism such as crevice, pittingand stress corrosion cracking.Slow, time dependant, deformation normally at temperatures above 600 OC. Stress levels that result in creepare significantly below the short term proof strength for a particular temperature.A cold forming method where a sheet is drawn into a die by a press tool to make deep cup or bowl shapes. Theside wall of the pressing is not deliberately thinned during forming of stretch forming. Grade 1.4301(304) isused widely for deep drawn sink bowls.Steels with a mix of austenite and ferrite phases, intended to produce higher mechanical strength steels withbetter stress corrosion cracking resistance than the austenitic types.A progressive mechanical failure mechanism resulting from oscillating (cyclic) stresses (e.g. vibration) over alarge number of stress reversals. Martensitic steels can be susceptible to fatigue, other types are moreresistant.A phase in the steel with the smallest building block of atomic structure of ‘body centred cubic’ (bcc) i.e. oneatom at the eight corners of a cube and one in the centre of the cube. Ferritic stainless steels with thisstructure include 1.4016 (430) and are characteristically magnetic.Normally associated with heat treatment process (austenitising and tempering) but cold work also increases thehardness of austenitic stainless steels. Hardness is the resistance to indentation or scratching, cf strengthening whichis an increase in tensile properties.Deformation (forging) above the recrystallisation temperature of the steel. Here the metal continuously anneals

itself as the work progresses. There is no increase in strength on cooling to ambient temperature and annealing is notneeded after hot working.A phase in the steel with a characteristic high hardness, but which can be brittle. Formed when carbon/chromium(martensitic stainless steels) are cooled rapidly from their austenitising temperature during heat treatment.Martensitic stainless steels include grades 1.4021 (420).A form of sub-critical temperature annealing process used where some of the structural breakdown during previouscold working is to be retained.Surface condition making the steel corrosion resistant i.e. the passive film is stable under the prevailing conditions.Stainless steels are intended to be used under conditions where they maintain their passive condition.Surface oxidising treatments, normally done using nitric acid, to promote the formation of the transparent protectivecorrosion resisting layer on the surface of the steel. These treatments are only needed for complex machined partsintended for immediate service where the natural passivation process may be hindered.A magnetic property of materials related to their ability to be attracted by a permanent magnet or influenced by amagnetic field. Austentic stainless steels e.g. 1.4301 (304) when annealed have relative permeability levels just above1 and are said to be non-magnetic.A scale showing the hydrogen ion concentration of solutions. Acids have pH values between 1 and 6, basses (alkalis)between 8 and 14 and water (neutral) has a value of 7.Chemical (usually acid) treatments that remove a thin layer of surface metal. Pickling with nitric acid is also used toremove iron contamination from stainless steel surfaces. Also known as skin pass. A final cold rolling operation in the production of coil (strip) to improve shape and flatness.Resulting finish is 2B.A form of localised corrosion (attack) often associated with the presence of chlorides in the environment.A strengthening mechanism produced by heat treatment. Can only be done on specially formulated steels e.g. 1.4542(17/4PH). High strengths are achieved with better impact toughness than with ordinary martensitic steels e.g. 1.4021(420), 1.4057 (431), but usually with lower hardnesses.Temperature above which an arbitrary rate of surface oxidation in air occurs.Often expressed in a weight gain per unit surface area per specified time unit e.g. g/cm2/hour.A potential reduction in corrosion resistance (normally associated with intercystalline attack) due to holding orpassing through particular high temperature ranges. Weld decay is an old term for this.Making the steel more resistant to intercrystalline corrosion sensitisation by adding small amounts of either titaniumor niobium to the steel. Grades 1.4541 (321), 1.4550 (347) and 1.4571 (316Ti) are examples of stabilised grades.Heat treatment done to reduce internal (residual) stresses, following cold working. Done to improve resistance tostress corrosion cracking.A cold forming method where a sheet is drawn into a die by a press tool to make deep cup or bowl shapes. Thesidewall of the pressing is thinned during forming but the cold working induced prevents fractures in these areas cfdeep drawing. The second stage during the hardening / strengthening heat treatment of martensitic stainless steels. Improves thetoughness but with some loss in strength and hardness.
