t has been looming but the tough financial constraints of Formula 1 have hit the paddock hard with Caterham F1 and Marussia absent this weekend after being placed into administration.
Formula 1 has seen several teams come and go over the years but losing two teams within a week should set alarm bells ringing around the motorsport world and at the FIA.
Administrators have been brought in to find buyers for both outfits but it seems increasingly unlikely that they will return to the grid before the season is over.
While struggling backmarker teams have been a feature in F1 for decades, the demise of Caterham F1 and Marussia has issued a stark warning to the remaining privateer teams in the paddock.
As a result, Austin is set to witness the lowest entry for a race since the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix, when the grid was reduced to 18 cars after BAR Honda were suspended from the event.
It is perhaps unfortunate that the depleted grid is set to hit another event in America although this is far from the scenes of the 2005 US GP, when a dispute
between the FIA, Michelin and teams led to just six cars making the race at Indianapolis.
Luckily the American crowd have an enthralling title battle to focus their attentions on with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton holding a 17 point lead over team-mate Nico Rosberg.
After securing four wins on the trot Hamilton seemingly has the momentum with time fast running out for Rosberg to respond. The Brit has been successful on American soil with two victories from his three starts.
The German will need to strike back this weekend to close the gap with just two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi remaining.

he spiralling costs of competing in motorsport’s pinnacle have claimed two more victims with the future of Marussia and
Caterham F1 looking bleak after going into administration.
Formula One has always been expensive and teams have come and gone, but for two outfits to hit trouble within the space of a week suggests something is fundamentally wrong.
While Caterham’s demise is not purely down to finances but a dispute over ownership, Marussia’s financial struggle has highlighted just how fragile the paddock is for smaller teams.
The writing has been on the wall for some time now with concerns regarding the escalating finances and the difficulty to secure investment rearing its head on several occasions.
Head of the FIA, Jean Todt tried to ease the situation by proposing a cost cap to teams at the start of the year, but this failed to garner support from F1’s powerhouses Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes, who wish to
Caterham and Marussia demise a stark warning for F1
Tcontinue to spend in pursuit of glory.
The sport’s overlord Bernie Ecclestone, who owns the F1’s commercial rights, also provided some resistance to the move.
This season has also been particularly expensive for the likes of Sauber, Force India, Caterham and Marussia with new regulations forcing teams to invest in new technology following the introduction of 1.6 litre V6 turbo engines.
In a recent report by Autosport, it is understood the introduction of hybrid power systems in conjunction with the new power units alone, cost a midfield team $28 million, easily one of the biggest expenditures for the campaign.
Smaller operations are not the only teams to find difficulty this season with multiple world champion team McLaren competing this year without a title sponsor after failing to replace telecom giant Vodafone.
The global economic crisis has played its part in the decline of investment in the sport, but F1 itself has some questions to answer too.
Distribution of the sport’s income from commercial rights, estimated at $61 million (AUD), falls drastically short of the $135 million (AUD) cost required to run even a midfield team for a season.
The allocation of prize money has also come into question with the current system designed heavily in favourof the affluent teams capable of plunging resources to ensure success.
The prize fund, calculated from F1’s underlying profit is split into two sections. One half of the prize fund is distributed evenly to teams while the second half is split depending on positions in the constructors standings at the end of the season.
In addition to this, Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren also share a $100 million Constructors Championship Bonus with positions determined on how many races the teams have won in the fours years prior to 2012.
Ferrari are third in standings which will see the Italian firm accrue $30 million on top of an annual payment in the region of

$62 million having brokered a deal with F1 as the category. As a result, the Maranello team receives $100 million, effectively Caterham’s season budget, even before a race is run.
In the case of Marussia the blow of administration comes after a breakthrough year for the team who achieved their first points since their inception in 2010.
The Banbury-based team are on course to scoop $45 million (AUD) in prize money for finishing 10th in the constructors championship which is a sizeable increase compared to the $6.8 Million (AUD) they have received in the last three seasons.
Caterham and Marussia’s demise may not be the only teams at risk with Force India’s deputy team principal Bob Fearnley predicting more teams will collapse if F1 refuses to reform.
“We’ve had three new teams since 2010, and all three have collapsed,” Fearnley told British newspaper The Telegraph.
“The writing was on the wall from the beginning. Only five teams have a say in the running of Formula One – we’ll lose more teams if we carry on like this.
“If there had been cost control and more equitable distribution of the prize money maybe Caterham and Marussia wouldn’t have failed.”

Round 17 - Texas Grand Prix I Cover Story
Rubens Barrichello scored a controversial victory in the 2002 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis after a formation finish with Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher went awry.
Schumacher had led the majority of the race as the Ferrari duo dominated the race with the pair split by no more than four seconds throughout the encounter.
The pair attempted a formation finish on the run to the flag which resulted in
Barrichello just edging Schumacher to take the win by just 0.011s. The winning margin remains the closest in Formula 1 history.
The triumph was Ferrari’s eighth one-two finish of the season.
“The end of the race was not planned,” said Schumacher in a post race interview.
“We tried to cross the line together but failed by a tiny bit and in fact we did not know who had won until we got out of the cars. I just felt Rubens deserved to win this race.”
McLaren’s David Coulthard came through to claim the final place on the podium ahead of Williams’ Juan Pablo Montoya, who had been involved in clash with Ralf Schumacher on the lap two which ended his team-mate’s race.
Renault’s Jarno Trulli and BAR Honda’s Jacques Villeneuve secured the remaining points paying positions in fifth and sixth respectively.
United States Grand Prix 2002
FLASHBACK
Meanwhile there is hope that this is not the end for Caterham and Marussia with administrators at the former revealing several interested parties are keen to buy the team, while reports suggest a bid is close to being tabled for Marussia.
However, a long term solution to
safeguard teams for the future is far from straight forward with the divide between F1’s giants and minnows widening.
The sport has always revolved around teams trying to apply resources and technology to break new ground and find fractions of seconds to get an advantage.
Cutting costs and a reform of the prize fund system are obvious responses but achieving this is a task in itself, which will require full support from every team which has so far proved difficult to muster.

CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS
Circuit Layout Austin has an interesting track layout,
inspired by some of the most iconic elements of classic racing circuits from around the world. There is a lot of high-speed content to start the lap with the ‘S’ curves through Turns 2 - 6, requiring good downforce, balance and high-speed stability from the car. Before even that, however, there is an uphill braking zone into the off-camber Turn 1 - again requiring good balance. There’s the long, sweeping, continuous right-hand curve of Turns 16 - 18, which is deceptively difficult to carry speed through and equally tricky to get absolutely right lap after lap. The back straight is one of the longest on the current calendar - providing a prime overtaking opportunity due to the low-speed nature of the preceding hairpin coupled with a DRS zone. Likewise the start / finish straight which, while not as long, offers good possibilities for a DRS-assisted overtake into Turn 1, where multiple lines can be taken both into and out of the corner. The circuit layout itself is not particularly demanding of one area of a car over another - it’s a good all-round test of performance with a few unique characteristics. While there
is a long straight, there is far more time to be found through the corners, making good downforce far more relevant. It is also a middle-of-the-road track in terms of demands on brakes and tyres.
Tyres
2013 saw a one-stop strategy adopted
almost universally throughout the grid. This year, however, Pirelli have chosen a tyre allocation one step softer - medium and soft in lieu of the hard and medium nominated last time out in Austin. With a variety of racing formulae providing continued running on the circuit throughout the year, the surface will have stabilised and will therefore be as aggressive - if not more aggressive - than last season. A relative unknown quantity in the form of the soft compound will therefore provide a fresh challenge. Data gathered during running on the medium tyre will correlate - and this compound has performed well historically in Austin. However, the performance of the soft in these conditions will need to be determined. An argument might be made that the 2014 compounds are, overall, half a step harder than last year’s editions, thus rendering the change in allocation
insignificant. While this statement in its essence is certainly true, the characteristics of the new V6 Hybrid engines with their increased torque and power - coupled with a reduction in rear end downforce - negates that half step. Evidence of this can be seen when comparing the average number of pit stops seen at each race this season to that of 2013, which closely correlate.
Climate
It can be very cold in Austin at this
time of year. There have been mornings during race weekends where arrival at the track is greeted by temperatures of just five degrees. During the race week, temperatures can vary from as high as 27 - 28 right down to 18 - 19 degrees. This shift in climate tends to fall during the Grand Prix week, with the preceding week often relatively warm and the following week often relatively cold. This is far from guaranteed, of course, meaning that teams must be able to cater for all conditions. This doesn’t require any particular pre-planning - more an ability to adapt to conditions as they evolve during the course of the weekend.
