• He was born in New York• He lived in Bloomington Illinois
as a child until age 11• He was a fine horseman and his
uncle was a saddle maker by trade
• He loved to hunt, swim, ride horses and go camping
• He went to Yale art school and played on the football team there
• He enjoyed creating action paintings and drawings for the student newspaper
• He journeyed to Montana when he was 19 to see the “wild west”
• His first art sale was to Harper Weekly magazine when on this trip
He gained fame and fortune as a serious painter and sculptor.
He was a realistic painter but became more impressionistic in his two final years
He enjoyed painting horses and often brought them into the studio where he painted !
Blackfoot War Party was exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the New York Herald said he would one day be listed among our great American painters
