About Concrete CanoeEach year, engineering students from across the na-tion and beyond design and build a canoe using con-crete as the principle building material . The project provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they gain in the classroom, along with important team and project manage-ment skills that will be beneficial to their future ca-reers . Each spring, students represent their schools in the ASCE Regional Conference Concrete Canoe Com-petition . The event challenges the students’ knowl-edge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material .

This year, the Great Lakes Regional Conference Con-crete Canoe Competition will be held at Homer Lake Forest Preserve, approximately 25 minutes east of the University of Illinois campus . The lake was host to the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) this past June . For location details, please see the maps on the following pages .

During the competition, teams are judged on vari-ous categories that combine to produce their overall score . Twenty-five percent of each team’s total score is based on the engineering design and construction principles used in the creation of their concrete ca-noe; 25 percent is based on a technical design report detailing the planning, development, testing, and construction of their canoe; and 25 percent is based on a formal business presentation highlighting the canoe’s design, construction, racing ability, and oth-er innovative features . The remaining 25 percent of each team’s score is based on the performance of the canoe and the paddlers in five different race events: men’s and women’s slalom/endurance races, and men’s, women’s, and co-ed sprint races .

The steel bridge competition will be held at the Parkland Gymnasium . Parkland College is located off of Bradley Ave . just west of County Fair Dr . See maps on this page and the next for the exact location .

The steel bridge competition consists of the timed construc-tion of steel bridges under various rules . The bridges are then weighed and laterally load-tested . Assuming success to this point, the bridges are finally loaded with 2500 lb, and deflec-tions are measured at key locations along the bridge .

Scoring is based on a minimization of “total cost” associated with each bridge . Cost is based on construction economy and structural efficiency .

For those of you competing, unloading will begin at 6:30am and aesthetics judging will begin at 8:00am . Competition runs will begin promptly at 9:00am, with conclusion no later than 5:00pm . (The goal is earlier!) A detailed schedule will be released at the Captain’s Meeting .

SURVEYING

Friday, April 11 Homer Lake Forest Preserve 8:00am start time

The Surveying Competition will consist of three events, each testing fundamental surveying skills as they apply to civil engineering . The first event will simulate a construction lay-out, where each team will have to perform horizontal curve calculations and lay out a simple circular curve . For the next event, each team will have to determine elevations at spec-ified locations using a leveling circuit . The final event will be an instrument setup relay in which each member will be re-quired to completely set up and take down a total station in a timed relay race .

This year, the Great Lakes Regional Conference Surveying Competition will be held at Homer Lake Forest Preserve, ap-proximately 25 minutes east of the University of Illinois cam-pus . MATERIALS ENGINEERING

The Materials Competition will be held Friday, April 11 from 10:00am until 2:00pm in the basement of Talbot Laboratory, home of the University of Illinois’ 3 million pound test frame . High strength and lightweight concrete cylinders will be tested to failure in compression . Scoring is based on spec-imen capacity and weight .

Meters will be blocked off on Wright Street and Healey Street . Healey Street is a one-way street going west . The basement of Talbot is accessible from the south doors of the building .

MYSTERY DESIGN

The Mystery Design Competition is exactly as it sounds, a mystery . Participants have no idea how to prepare for the competition until they arrive at the conference on Thursday . Typically the competition consists of a real life engineering problem that has been modeled by common household items . Every team will have a chance to prepare a design pri-or to the event but will have to start fresh during the desig-nated competition build time . All teams will design simulta-neously . At the end of this time period, each team will be judged based on the performance of their design .

This year the competition takes on a geotechnical theme and will be hosted on Friday, April 11th at Homer Lake Forest Pre-serve . It will be held inside the Salt Fork Center provided it is not being used as shelter from unforeseen weather .

About Mystery Design

Mystery Design Competition

This year’s Environmental Engineering Com-petition will simulate an oil spill and ask teams to develop their own system to remove and recover the oil . Each team will be given a con-tainer with 4L of water mixed with 400mL of canola oil . The teams will attempt to extract as much of the oil as they can out of the wa-ter within 20 minutes . The teams will perform this task using materials that fit into a contain-er the size of a shoebox .

After the teams perform the extraction, they will spend 5-7 minutes presenting their sys-tems to the judges . The teams will explain their systems, while discussing cost efficiency and the scalability of their system to a larger oil spill .

The Environmental Engineering Competition will take place on Saturday, April 12th from 8am to 12pm, at the Newmark Civil Engineer-ing Laboratory . The competition portion will take place in the crane bay, and the presenta-tions will occur in room 2311 .

TECHNICAL PAPER PRESENTATION

The technical paper competition presenta-tions will be held in room 3350 Newmark (Yeh Center) . This is the conference room that is located on the third floor of the Yeh Center .

Students will give presentations on the ethi-cal question of of a civil engineer’s responsi-bilities are with regards to natural disasters . Contestants were asked to submit a 2,000-word essay on the matter, and now have the opportunity to defend their position in a five-minute presentation to a panel of judg-es . Each participant is given an additional five minutes for questions from the panel .

This event is scheduled to take place from 8:00am to 12:30pm, with a 30 minute break . Audience members are encouraged to at-tend .

QUIZ BOWL

The Quiz Bowl Competition will take place on Saturday at 1pm in the Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory room 1310 . Each school is allowed to provide one team of at most four members to compete . Teams will be quizzed through multiple choice questions on various different civil engineer-ing subjects and topics . The competition will consist of two rounds . In the first round, every team will answer forty differ-ent multiple choice questions . The top five teams after the

first round will advance to a final round of ten more challeng-ing questions . Once the final round is complete placement will be based on teams’ total number of points .

Select parking lots, shaded as specified above, are free to park in after 5pm Friday and throughout the weekend .

The parking lot located along Healey Street (Lot #1 on map) is accessible from Healey Street or Sixth Street (Healey St . is one-way to the west, and Sixth St . is one-way to the south) . This parking lot is near Green Street, which is the bar and restaurant heart of Campustown .

The parking lot located along Wright Street (Lot #2 on map) is accessible from Wright Street . Note that this lot is located adja-cent to Talbot Lab, which is where the Materials Competition will be taking place .

The parking lot located along Springfield Avenue (Lot #3 on map) is accessible from Goodwin Avenue and Mathews Avenue (one-way to the north) .

The parking lot located along Harvey Avenue (Lot #4 on map) is accessible from Clark Street . Lots #3 and #4 are located near Yeh Center, where many of the competitions will be taking place .

When in doubt regarding parking, each parking lot on campus has blue and orange signs posted at each entrance which de-scribe availability, etc .

Red: Free Friday after 5:00pm and all weekend (including overnight)

Blue: Free Friday after 5 pm and all weekend (however NO PARKING ALLOWED 2:00am - 7:00am)
