Attachment, Neurodevelopmentand PsychopathologyPatricia M. Crittenden, Ph.D.
Patricia McKinsey Crittenden, Ph.D.This 3-day course focuses on the development, prevention, and
treatment of psychological disorder. It weaves together theory,
human development, assessment, case examples, and treatment
applications to reframe maladaptive behavior in terms of strategies
for self-protection. The course focuses on development from infancy
to adulthood, emphasizing the process of adaptation and
developmental pathways that carry risk for psychopathology. The
model used, the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of attachment
and adaptation. The DMM is relevant to individuals who are at-risk,have been exposed to danger, display disturbed or maladaptive
behavior, or are diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder. A
particular emphasis is cultural influences on attachment.

Patricia Crittenden hasmany years experience asan academic andpractitioner in the fields of child abuse, attachmenttheory, and family therapy. After her training with MaryAinsworth, she served onthe Faculties of Psychologyat the Universities of Virginia and Miami. She
has held visiting positions at the Universities of Helsinki andBologna, as well as the Clark Institute of Psychiatry(Canada), San Diego State University (USA), and EdithCowan University (Australia). She is well known for havingdeveloped the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of attachment and adaptation and is one of the founders of theInternational Association for the Study of Attachment(IASA). In 2004, she received a Career Achievement Awardfrom the European Family Therapy Association. In addition, she has published more than 100 scientific papers andseveral books.
The course is structured developmentally and consists of lecture
with slides, videotapes, and interview transcripts to demonstrate the
patterns and principles of development. A set of readings and
exercises, tied to each day’s material, are offered.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Each day includes:
1. a developmental overview,
2. information processing as it affects self- and child-protective behavior,
3. description of new self-protective strategies that
develop at the age level,
4. an application of DMM ideas to generate a novel
approach to disorder
5. treatment strategies drawn from all the major
theories of treatment and selected on the basis of
information processing and strategy.
An introduction is given to the DMM assessments of
attachment:
• CARE-Index (infancy from birth to 24 months)
• AinsworthStrangeSituation(SSP , 11-15 months)
• ToddlerCARE-Index(15-36 months)

More than ever, the breakthroughs from evidence-based research and
the accelerated understanding o the brain can advance treatment,
reduce stigma and infuence more people to seek care and benet rom
the eectiveness o mental health care. Leaders in psychiatric and
neuroscientic research on the symposium’s aculty will address clinicalissues that mental health proessionals can apply to their practice.
Menninger is proud to present the symposium as we prepare to move into
a larger hospital with an expanding education, research and advocacy
agenda. To mark the completion of our new campus, we are offering this
enriching symposium at a cost of only $30.

Target audience
This activity is designed for psychiatrists, intermediate and advanced
psychologists, social workers, licensed proessional counselors,
addiction proessionals and other mental health care proessionals.
Practice gap
The traditional practice of psychiatry has relied on the expertise andexperience of the clinician, built on knowledge of psychopathology.
Despite substantial progress demonstrating the eectiveness o evidence-
based treatment; however, stigma continues to shroud mental illness
and many patients do not receive the treatment they need. Knowledge
gaps exist between the known prevalence of psychiatric disorders and
the identication o these disorders in suering individuals, as well as
between currently practiced treatment methods and new evidence-based
treatment interventions. Progress in genetics, molecular neurobiology
and brain imaging is elucidating our understanding o psychiatric
disorders as brain disorders, and knowledge o new neuroscience holds
the best promise or de-stigmatizing psychiatry and o enrolling patients
in benecial treatments.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Recognize the societal impact of neuropsychiatric disease and positive
discoveries in the eld to address unmet needs o people living with
mental illness.
• Articulate how mental disorders can be approached as brain disorders
based on dierences in the trajectory o brain development.

Learning objectives (continued)
• Describe how vaccines for treating addictions to cocaine and other
abused drugs work and their clinical efcacy.
• Identify psychotherapeutic interventions that positively affect
neurobiological unctioning in patients with borderline
personality disorder.
• Explain the status of new antidepressants in development and discuss
difculties in both drug and device development.
