Foundation of liberal arts education at The Citadel
Academic Departments Role Within College
Liberal Arts Education: Its Enduring Importance
“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”
--Socrates, 420 B.C.
“The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts, but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.”-
--Albert Einstein, 1914
“Who will lead America into a bright future? Citizens who are educated in the broadest possible sense, so they can participate in their own governance and engage with the world. An adaptable and creative workforce. Experts in national security, equipped with the cultural understanding, knowledge of social dynamics, and language proficiency to lead our foreign service and military through complex global conflicts. Elected officials and a broader public who exercise civil political discourse, founded on an appreciation of the ways our differences and commonalities have shaped our rich history. We must prepare the next generation to be these future leaders.”
--The Heart of the Matter. A Congressionally commissioned study , 2013.
The SHSS is the foundation of a liberal arts education at The Citadel. It teaches students the fundamental principles of major fields of knowledge. It develops their appreciation of the diversity of the human experience. It cultivates their ability to conduct research, to think critically, to draw logical conclusions, and to express their thoughts effectively. It encourages them to welcome--and to learn from--conversations with people who use the same process to arrive at conclusions different from their own. And it emphasizes the need constantly to expand the boundaries of knowledge by promoting the research and publication of its faculty. Through this process, the SHSS seeks to prepare and motivate students to be informed, principled, and effective leaders in all avenues of life. Among the professions most commonly pursued by SHSS majors are: business, the armed forces, law, education, and public service. Distinguished alumni include Ernest F. Hollings, John C. West, Joseph P. Riley, Jr., and Pat Conroy.

SHSS Summer Study Away, USA:The Citadel in Washington, D.C.: Leadership in Action
Class Time: Monday - Friday, 3 credit hours course + 3 credit hours internship
OVERVIEW: With Washington, D.C. as the student’s backdrop, this interdisciplinary seminar is designed to engage students in a deeper understanding of the intersection of business, culture and politics as it applies to leadership in our nation’s capital. Each Monday, students will partner with faculty to explore DC landmarks that illustrate the conjunction of business, culture, and political science in terms of better understanding leadership of our nation. Instructors will approach the capital from a variety of perspectives and disciplines, incorporating concepts of ethics, leadership, and critical thinking. From Tuesday through Friday, internships in diverse fields will complement the academic knowledge with professional experiences. A comprehensive paper and presentation will tie all of these efforts together over the nine week period. Co-taught by faculty from business, political science, fine arts, and career services, the course satisfies 3 upper-level elective credit hours towards these majors/minors or 3 general elective credit hours for non-majors plus 3 credit hours for the internship.
