3G is the third generation of wireless
technologies. It comes with enhancements over
previous wireless technologies, like high-speedtransmission, advanced multimedia access and
global roaming. 3G is mostly used with mobile
phones and handsets as a means to connect the
phone to the Internet or other IP networks in
order to make voice and video calls, to download
and upload data and to surf the net.

This first generation (1G) analog system for mobile
communications saw two key improvements during
the 1970s: the invention of the microprocessor and
the digitization of the control link between themobile phone and the cell site.
Second generation (2G) digital cellular systems
were first developed at the end of the 1980s. These
systems digitized not only the control link but alsothe voice signal. The new system provided better
quality and higher capacity at lower cost to
consumers.

Third generation (3G) systems promise faster
communications services, including voice, fax andInternet, anytime and anywhere with seamless
global roaming. ITU¶s IMT-2000 global standard
for 3G has opened the way to enabling innovative
applications and services (e.g. multimediaentertainment, infotainment and location-based
services, among others). The first 3G network was
deployed in Japan in 2001. 2.5G networks, such as
GPRS (Global Packet Radio Service) are alreadyavailable in some parts of Europe.
Work has already begun on the development of
fourth generation (4G) technologies in Japan.

The data are Packet-based which provides several
advantages over the existing circuit-switched
techniques. These techniques are used for carryingmobile voice. It allows higher call volumes and
support for multimedia data applications, such as
video and photography.
The charges are based on amount of data transmittedand not on time taken to connect to the network.

3 G network is one of the leading technologies in
today¶s wireless technology. This service is
available with any wireless phones. Verizon isthe first one to use this. It was first implemented
on CDMA phones .now this service is coming
soon with GSM. If we describe 3g is nothing but
fast stream and high bandwidth.

A great deal of potential exists for new
applications in the future as 3G packet based
networks will allow users to be on line all thetime. The capabilities of wireless networks in
terms of bandwidth must still, however, be
improved upon.

3G is an exciting new technology that is being
incorporated into mobile devices across the
globe. Users are now able to make person-to- person calls, download data and do a variety of
other tasks they never imagined possible all via
their 3G cell phones.
