The Day to Remember ThoseWe’ve Lost
Memorial Day, originally known asDecoration Day, began in the 1860s,when people would decorate the gravesof soldiers who had fought in the CivilWar. Gen. John Logan, leader of a CivilWar veterans’ organization, officiallyproclaimed May 30 as Memorial Dayin 1868.
After World War I, May 30 became aday to honor fallen soldiers fromall wars.
In 1971, Memorial Day became afederal holiday, and Congress declaredit be celebrated on the last Monday inMay, ensuring a three-day weekend.
Cities across the country holdMemorial Day parades and otherevents. American flags are often placedthroughout cemeteries for veterans. Atother cemeteries, many people chooseto decorate the graves of all loved ones, not just service members.
On Memorial Day, the American flagshould be flown at half-staff until noon, then raised to full staff in recognition ofthose currently serving in the military.
The Memorial Day weekend is often atime for picnics and barbecues, as it isconsidered the unofficial startof summer.
