Animal Maintenance: Special Requests for Alternate Animal Holding/Housing Procedure

OverviewIn cases where a Principal Investigator (PI) requires alternate animal holding/housing, exemplary animal care and use practices are required in accordance with applicable laws and the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines as well as the Tri-Council requirements Memorandum of Understanding on the Roles and Responsibilities in the Management of Federal Grants and Awards. This procedure outlines the process for application approval and supervision of these facilities.
PurposeIdentify the procedure to be followed for special requests for alternate animal holding/housing.
Need toDEFINE EXPECTATIONS
1. All animals must be kept in facilities that meet CCAC guidelines.
2. Veterinary care must be provided.
3. Scientific justification must be reviewed by the Animal Care Committee (ACC).
4. Facility Director must indicate that housing is not available in the existing facility.
Need to DEFINE
1. Procedural area < 12 hours.
2. Holding area > 12 hours but < 72 hours or when a cage change would be needed.
3. Housing > 72 hours for extended time periods.
Need AnAPPLICATION TO THE
ANIMAL CARE COMMITTEE
Signed by the facility Director:
“I concur the unique requirements of this research proposed cannot be met within the existing facilities.”
NeedJUSTIFICATION
Examples:
1. Equipment is specialized.
2. Monitoring is intensive and extensive.
3. Environment is unique.
4. Procedural space is not available.
Unacceptable Reasons
1. Don’t want to pay per diems.
2. Want to provide all the animal care themselves.
3. More convenient.
