Description: Articles document an investigation by a Board of U.S. Army Engineers into the
possible causes of and solutions to the formation of ice gorges along the Hudson River, which
annually caused considerable damage due to flooding. The clippings detail the CC’s proposal
and appeal for donations to hire steamboats to plow an opening in the gorges. Other articles
follow the debate over the pros and cons of proposed improvements to the Erie Canal, including
an inland route via construction of the New York State Barge Canal through improvement of the

Description: Articles document the battle between local shippers and the steamboat companies
that carried freight between Albany and New York City. In light of increased freight rates,
businessmen in Albany and Troy held back their freight from the People’s and Citizen’s lines and
proposed creation their own independent boat line, extension of the trolley line into Arbor Hill.

Description: This book contains newspaper clippings detailing the President’s call for volunteers
during the Spanish America war. He requests that the quota be made up mainly from the
National Guard and the National Guard of New York State is then organized into regiments.
Most of the articles are concerned with the activities of Co. D, Troy and the movement of its
troops between camps: Camp Black, NY; Chickamanga, GA; and Tampa ,FL. There is also
news of other regiments and war battles. Most of the clippings are from the Troy Daily Press
and the Troy Daily Times and include stories about the mobilization and movement of the NYS
National Guard and local stories about the soldiers themselves.

Mary Willard Vine a respected landscape architect and interior decorator. There are also letters
written during WWII (ie. from Herbert Lehman) in regard to the Buyck’s interests in Foreign
Relief. Mrs. Buyck is recommended for other positions such as an educator in the adult education
department of the New York State Education Department. She is highly recommended for many
professional positions and complimented by various government and industrial executives.
