MANROLAND DRUCKMASCHINEN AG,AUGSBURG

Manroland is the world's secondlargest printing systems manufacturerand the world market leader in weboffset printing. The company has al-most 9,000 employees worldwide. The assembly of web offset pressesfor newspaper printing and high-value commercial printing takesplace at its Augsburg production site.

Healthy indoor environment

For Bruno Lutter, trainer in printingtechnology for manroland commer-cial printing presses, the correct hu-midity has always been important:"As a printer, I know what problemscan be caused if the humidity in theprint hall is too low. These can in-clude paper distortion, electrostaticcharges and register differences.

To me it was obvious that optimalhumidity of 45-50% must be provi-ded in our training centre." FourDRAABE DI Puls high-pressure atomi-zers have been installed at Augsburgfor ten years. In this time, Bruno Lut-ter has come to value a positive sideeffect of the air humidification: "Thecorrect air humidity promotes a verypleasant and healthy indoor environ-ment. When I have to talk a lot, Iparticularly enjoy the pleasant air inthe training centre."

Full service impresses

„In 10 years, there has never been afault in the DRAABE system - it alwaysruns perfectly," recalls Lutter. In orderto ensure full performance and 100%hygiene, maintenance of the DRAABEsystems is very simply carried outusing the full-service rental system:Every six months, manroland receivescompletely serviced and disinfectedreplacement units for the water treat-ment and high-pressure pulsation sy-stems. Bruno Lutter sees this serviceas a true "worry-free package", thatfits perfectly with the manroland pro-duct philosophy.

The KBA plant in Radebeul nearDresden is one of the most success-ful companies in the KBA Group and, with its 2,300 employees, is responsi-ble for sheetfed offset printing busi-ness area. The printing presses fromthe KBA plant at Radebeul range fromhalf-format 52 x 74 cm to large 2 m

sheetfed formats. KBA is an interna-tional market leader in large format.

Familiarizing customers

The in-house training centre at Rade-beul offers the best conditions fortraining courses for KBA customers la-sting several days. Around 1000 m2 isdevoted to practical training on a Ra-pida 105 and a Rapida 142. "The highproduction capacity of modern prin-ting presses and the continued furt-her development of paper andprinting ink require increasingly stan-dardized production conditions," saysUlf Kamiski (head of maintenance),explaining the need for constant hu-midity. The training centre and thepaper store have been fitted with theDRAABE TurboFog air humidificationsystem since 2004. "A second reasonfor this is also to familiarize our cus-tomers from around the world withthe subject of 'humidity'," continuesKaminski.

Simple retrofitting

Crucial to the selection of theDRAABE system were the integratedwater treatment and the special full-service maintenance package: "Allsystem modules including servicecome from a single source and areperfectly tailored to each other – thisprovides reliability," explains Kamin-ski. Thanks to the modular containersystem, it is also possible to expanda DRAABE system at any time with-out incurring major installation costs.A benefit that KBA will also utilize inthe construction of its new, additio-nal training centre.

HEIDELBERGER DRUCKMASCHINEN AG,WIESLOCH-WALDORF

KOENIG & BAUER AG (KBA),RADEBEUL

With a 40% market share, Heidel-berger Druckmaschinen AG is theworld's leading supplier of sheetfedoffset presses. In addition to preci-sion mechanical engineering, thecompany also offers complete soluti-ons for software development andworkflow optimization. With around6,400 employees, the Wiesloch-Waldorf plant is the largest printingpress factory in the world.

Optimal humidity for test runs

The right humidity plays a crucial rolein quality assurance in many produc-tion halls on the 860,000 m2 site. At75,000 m2, Hall 6 is the largest pro-duction hall for the modular and finalassembly of the Speedmaster SM102 and XL 105. The DRAABE DI Pulshigh-pressure nozzle system hasbeen installed there since 1996 to

ensure a constant, year-round rela-tive humidity of 50%. Currently, 215DRAABE atomizers are in use. "Opti-mal humidity is a prerequisite forprinting and testing after final assem-bly. If the humidity is too low, thetest runs are disrupted, spoilage in-creases and both time and moneyare wasted," explains NikolausGörgen from Heidelberg FacilityManagement Engineering.

365 fault-free days

The hygienic and fault-free operationof the air humidification system is en-sured by the specially preparedDRAABE pure water which is alsoused at Heidelberg for the processwater supply to the printing presses.Görgen expects 365 fault-free days ayear from an air humidification systemand, so far, he's never been disap-pointed by DRAABE: "Reliability, hy-giene and service are the keycharacteristics of the DRAABE system. We weren't impressed by either thetechnology or the available mainten-ance concepts of other systems."
