WEEKLY NEWSLETTER MESSAGE FROM LINDA BADGER, Executive Director
Deuteronomy 8:7 Eikev
“For thy Lord thy God bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills.” By Israeli Artist Yoram Raanan
This week’s parsha is Eikev which in Hebrew means “if you follow.” Moses continues his speech to the children of Israel and tells them to follow God’s commandments. If they do so, they will prosper in the Land they are about to conquer. Moses tells the Israelites their victories will be due to the wickedness of the nations they are about to conquer and because of God’s promises to the Israelites' Patriarchs.
Moses reviews their 40 year journey in the desert and all of the trespasses of the Israelites against God. He also speaks of God’s forgiveness of their sins after they repented and the giving of the Second Tablets.
Moses describes the Land they are about to enter as good land, overflowing with milk and honey. Moses also tells the Israelites about God’s rewards if they follow His commandments and teach them to their children.

Make sure to join us on Sunday, August 25th, to make a difference in our community at locations throughout Los Angeles through our Federation’s community service opportunities. Choose from these ways to give back — and feel great about taking the time to make an impact.
• Safe Place for Youth (SPY) — Bring a hat and sunscreen and meet us in SPY’s Community Garden to toil and beautify!
• Heal the Bay — Join us down at the shore to clean up Santa Monica Beach! We’ll focus on picking up those pieces of trash that often get overlooked but pose a danger to ocean animals and our environment.
• Ronald McDonald House — Volunteers ages 22-40, prepare a “meal of love” for residents of the House who have a child in the hospital — and create something special for the kids.
• The Los Angeles Jewish Home – Eisenberg Village — Spend time with senior residents and help them decorate and fill flowerpots to help spruce up the home.
Please make every effort to attend one of these special activities, as our partner organizations rely on the number of volunteers we indicate will be present. If you’re unable to join us on August 25th but would like to receive updates about future Federation volunteer opportunities, contact Melissa York at [email protected]. We look forward to volunteering with you! Robin Polansky Community Service Program Chair

LAST SHABBAT
It was nice to have Mike Sternfeld with us.
LAST FRIDAY’S SOUL SHABBAT
We had a small (14 people) but intimate and lovely gathering for our last Soul Shabbat . Rev Shayna and Rev Eli did a beautiful job of leading the "service" and singing all the great songs that have been the staple for these Soul Shabbat gatherings. We discussed some of the background for Tu B'Av and Shayna read a very informative e-mail from her daughter-in-law who lives in Jerusalem about the background and modern day interpretations of Tu B'Av. All the food offerings that people brought were delicious. It seemed that when 9PM arrived and it was closing time, people were still hanging around schmoozing and reluctant to leave!
Helene sure looks happy. Stuart Lutz and Frank seemed to be enjoying their conversation.
Mother Andrea Yahudian sure looks happy after Hannah’s
recent wedding.
Nice to have Leslie and Paulette Rochelle-Levy and Yaniv represent the Jewbilation Choir when so many others
were out of town.
