What is Tunza? In February 2003, the Governing Council of
UNEP adopted a long-term strategy for
engaging young people in environmentalactivities and in the work of UNEP.
The strategy was entitled the Tunza YouthStrategy. The word TUNZA means totreat with care or affection in Kiswahili (asub-regional language of Eastern Africa).

What is Tunza?
The overall Tunza Concept, therefore, aims to
create a global movement in which children andYouth will actively participate in sustainabledevelopment.
The initiative is meant to develop activities in theareas of capacity building, environmentalawareness, and information exchange, with a
vision to foster a generation of environmentallyconscious citizens, capable of positive action.

What is AYEN?
In line with this strategy, UNEP Regional
Office for Africa works with young people,both children and youth within the regionthrough the Tunza African YouthEnvironment Network (AYEN) and therecently formed Tunza African Childrens
Environment Network (ACEN).

What is AYEN?
UNEP ROA aims to produce stronger, cohesive
and sustainable children and youth networkswithin Africa in order to not only better engageyoung people in fulfilling its mission, but also
help them build each others capacity inenvironmental conservation and be betterprepared for the future.
ROA aims to do this by ensuring the growth ofthe network through enlisting new members anddisseminating information to AYEN

Objectives of AYEN
Specific objectives include to:
Build the capacity of young people in matters ofenvironmental conservation focusing on issuesrelated to Climate Change;
Provide young people with a forum for exchangeof ideas and experience thus enhancing inter-country cooperation;
Facilitate youth participation in national, regionaland international environmental fora wheneverpossible;

Objectives of AYEN
Encourage young peoples involvement in keydecision making International environmental fora
such as the, African Ministerial Conference onEnvironment (AMCEN), United NationsFramework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC), the United Nations Convention onthe Biological Diversity; Raise the visibility of environmental conservation
through environmental awareness campaignsusing media, sport, art and other culturalactivities targeting young people from across theregion.

As an AYEN member:
You shall be informed of UNEP activitiesand events within the African Region and
Globally During applications for the Tunza
International Youth Conferences heldevery year, AYEN members shall be givenpreference during selection.
