Development Weekend
Exciting time for female footballLast week’s conclusion to the TAC Cup Girls season provides a good moment to reflect on the future direction of female football in Victoria. Now the Geelong Falcons have been crowned 2018 TAC Cup Girls premiers following their Grand Final triumph over the Northern Knights, we’ll see a host of the competition’s most talented players filter into the Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s.
Many TAC Cup Girls players have already been added to VFL Women’s club lists and they’ll get their chance to impress AFL Women’s recruiters at senior level like Monique Conti and Chloe Molloy among others did in 2017.
Conti and Molloy both progressed from the Calder Cannons to play regular VFL Women’s games for Melbourne Uni and Diamond Creek respectively last year. Conti has since gone on to be named best-on-ground in the Western Bulldogs’ AFL Women’s premiership win and Molloy claimed the AFL Women’s Rising Star award following a stellar first season for Collingwood.
The coming years promise so much more opportunity for girls aspiring to follow their lead.
In 2017, there was 110 per cent growth in the number of female teams at community level – the equivalent of over 390 new teams – while the number of teams in the VFL Women’s has increased from 10 to 13 this year, presenting more places for players at state level as well.
These opportunities at state level will also flow through to the top level as the AFL Women’s undergoes a rapid expansion over the next two years, when six new clubs – including Geelong and North Melbourne in 2019 – will join the existing eight teams.
The Cats and Kangaroos have already signed a range of quality VFL Women’s talent to their inaugural lists, which will only create further opportunities across the competition for young-sters coming through the system.
It’s an exciting time to be involved in female football in Victoria.

Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 8Peter Jackson VFL Round 8 looms as a key week for several teams sitting just outside the top eight to prove their worth against finals contenders. We preview the action.
NORTH MELBOURNE vs BOX HILL HAWKS – Saturday 2.10pm @ Avalon Airport Oval[LIVE on Channel 7 and 3WBC Radio]
V
LAST ENCOUNTERNever played
FORM COMING INNorth Melbourne (10th, 3-3) scored its first win against a top-eight team in beating Port Melbourne by eight points last week. The Box Hill Hawks (3rd, 5-1) were quick to bounce back from their first loss, defeating the Northern Blues by 38 points in Round 7.
KEY QUESTION Can Jon Ceglar match it with Braydon Preuss? Hawthorn-listed ruckman Ceglar returned from well over a year out of football due to a knee injury for Box Hill in Round 5 and has quickly hit top form, recording 28 disposals, 10 marks and 28 hitouts last week. This week’s opponent Preuss is second in the VFL for average hitouts to advantage.
KEY STATThe Hawks and Kangaroos are the VFL’s first and second-ranked teams for contested marks per game respectively. Box Hill big men Ryan Schoenmakers, Jon Ceglar and Marc Pittonet will battle in the air with a particularly tall North Melbourne outfit likely containing Ben McKay, Nick Larkey, Tristan Xerri, Michael Close and Sam Durdin.
HOME CLUB’S PERSPECTIVE
North Melbourne senior coach David Loader on the experience of the club’s first six games in the VFL:
“The toughest things to get your head around is the off -field stuff and the management of players, and coordinating everything with the club’s AFL list. The VFL-listed players are good footballers who are now linked in with AFL players, so the biggest challenge has been seeing how it all works together and making sure everything runs as smoothly as it possibly can. The development of young guys who come into the team and seeing the way the North Melbourne playing list is enhanced by having their own VFL team have been two massive highlights. Winning our first game in our first year as a VFL team (against the Northern Blues in Round 2) was another highlight, as was beating Port Melbourne away from home last weekend when our form had been relatively average.”
On which VFL-listed players have impressed him so far this season:
“Michael Close, Nick Rippon, Chris Jansen, Nash Holmes and Jordan Harper have had a massive eff ect on the group with their leadership skills, and they’re
playing some great football as well. Mitch Rodd, Louis Cunningham, Fraser Cameron, Tyrone Leonardis and Nick Hogan have also come in and played a game or two and brought that youth and exuberance that young players bring.”
On the key factors that will help decide the result of the clash with the Box Hill Hawks:
“The Hawks are in red-hot form at the minute and anyone that comes out of that program is going to be very hard to play against. We’re concentrating on building our young players to play the brand of football we want to play, and I think if we can stick to the method we used against Port Melbourne to a reasonably good standard, then that will hold us in good stead. Our eff ort around the ball and our clearance work was far better last week than previously.”
North Melbourne VFL co-captain Michael Close has provided a tall target for the Kangaroos up forward in 2018

GEELONG vs WILLIAMSTOWN – Saturday 11am @ GMHBA Stadium
LAST ENCOUNTER
2017 Rd 7 @ Williamstown Football Ground: Williamstown 15.15 (105) d Geelong 7.10 (52)
FORM COMING IN
Geelong (8th, 3-3) lost its third match by a small margin in Round 7, falling to Essendon by seven points. Williamstown (5th, 4-2) notched a third straight win in Round 6 with a 43-point defeat of the Northern Blues, before having a bye last week.
KEY QUESTION
What can Jordan Keras bring to Geelong? Keras joined the VFL Cats aft er winning last year’s NEAFL best-and-fairest and recorded a team-high 24 disposals as well as eight tackles and a goal in his second game for 2018 last week. His toughness adds to a midfield already containing Tom Atkins, James Tsitas and Luke Kiel.
KEY STAT
Geelong’s midfield (see above) will come up against a strong clearance team in the Seagulls, who are the VFL’s fourth-ranked team in that category (the Cats are 12th). Which team gets on top at stoppages may depend on the ruck battle, with Ryan Abbott facing off with Williamstown colossus Nick Meese.
FOOTSCRAY vs COLLINGWOOD – Saturday 11am @ VU Whitten Oval
LAST ENCOUNTER
2017 Rd 11 @ Victoria Park: Collingwood 13.7 (85) d Footscray 12.8 (80)
FORM COMING IN
Footscray (9th, 3-3) evened its ledger with an eight-point victory over Werribee last week but has been unable to win back-to-back games this season. Collingwood (2nd, 5-1) recorded a fourth straight triumph in defeating Coburg by 25 points in Round 7.
KEY QUESTION
Which big bodies will get on top at stoppages? Both these teams boast hard-nuts that have been in form through the midfield, with the likes of Bulldogs trio Will Hayes, Lin Jong and Callum Porter (23 clearances between them last week) coming up against strong Magpies Brayden Sier and Rupert Wills (14 between them last week).
KEY STAT
Collingwood and Footscray are the first and second-ranked teams in the competition respectively for kicks per game, so limiting the opposition’s marking options should be a big focus for both sides in this match. Bulldogs play-maker Will Hayes is ranked third in the VFL for total kicks, while Marty Hore leads the Magpies in that category.
V
RICHMOND vs COBURG – Saturday 10.45am @ Swinburne Centre
[richmondfc.com.au LIVE STREAM]
LAST ENCOUNTER
2017 Rd 19 @ Swinburne Centre: Richmond 17.17
(119) d Coburg 4.9 (33)
FORM COMING IN
Richmond (1st, 5-1) retained top spot on the VFL
ladder with a second straight win last week, defeating
Sandringham by 65 points. Coburg (15th, 0-7) is
still searching for a first win aft er going down to
Collingwood by 25 points in Round 7.
KEY QUESTION
Could the Lions do the unthinkable? On paper this
match looks to be one of the most lop-sided contests
of 2018, with first on the ladder facing last. However,
Coburg scored only one point less than the second-
placed Magpies aft er half time last week, indicating
senior coach Leigh Adams’ young outfit is getting
better at finishing off games.
KEY STAT
The Lions need to find an answer for the Anthony
Miles problem. The tough Tigers on-baller tops the
VFL for total disposals, contested possessions and
clearances – and is backed up in the engine room by
the in-form Brandon Wood and Corey Ellis.

SANDRINGHAM vs WERRIBEE – Sunday 2pm @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval[vfl.com.au LIVE STREAM / VFL Live / LIVE on Casey Radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 11 @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval: Sandringham 17.6 (108) d Werribee 14.18 (102)
FORM COMING INSandringham (11th, 2-4) suff ered a fourth straight loss when it lost to Richmond to the tune of 65 points last week. Werribee (13th, 1-5) has lost consecutive games to Richmond, Collingwood and then Footscray by eight points in Round 7.
KEY QUESTIONIs this the last-chance saloon for these teams? With one game and almost 33 percentage points between the Zebras and eighth-placed Geelong, they’ll be desperate to bank the four points in this match. The Tigers, meanwhile, have come close in losses to the Cats, the Casey Demons and Footscray but would love some reward for eff ort.
KEY STATSandringham and Werribee have struggled to get the ball forward this season, both ranking in the VFL’s bottom five teams for inside-50s per game – and as a result, in the bottom five for total points scored. The Zebras in particular will be looking to improve upon their second-bottom-ranked average of 65 points per game.
V
NORTHERN BLUES vs ESSENDON – Saturday 1pm @ IKON Park
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 13 @ Windy Hill: Essendon 16.15 (111) d Northern Blues 4.6 (30)
FORM COMING INThe Blues (14th, 1-5) suff ered back-to-back defeats in losing to the Box Hill Hawks by 38 points last week. Essendon (6th, 4-2) bagged a third win in a row with a seven-point victory over Geelong in Round 7.
KEY QUESTIONWho’s next to get AFL call-ups? With Carlton and Essendon’s AFL teams struggling, youngsters performing well for their aligned VFL teams are being rewarded with elite-level games. Pat Kerr (Carlton), Dylan Clarke and Jordan Ridley (both Essendon) all debuted in AFL Round 9 last week aft er great starts to the VFL season.
KEY STATThe Bombers will fancy their chances of controlling the ball in space against the Blues. Northern averages 57 fewer uncontested possessions per game than Essendon – ranked last in the VFL, compared to fift h – and despite matching the Hawks in the contests last week, conceded 114 more uncontested possessions to their conquerors.
PORT MELBOURNE vs CASEY DEMONS – Saturday 2pm @ North Port Oval
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 11 @ North Port Oval: Port Melbourne 16.9 (105) d Casey Demons 5.10 (40)
FORM COMING INPort Melbourne (7th, 4-2) suff ered its first loss since Round 1 when it went down to North Melbourne by eight points at home last week. Casey (4th, 4-2) made it back-to-back wins following a bye with a 106-point defeat of Frankston in Round 7.
KEY QUESTIONWhich team is the real Borough? Aft er a win full of courage against Footscray two weeks ago, Port Melbourne perhaps surprisingly lost to the Kangaroos last week despite recording 92 more disposals and 42 more marks. The test of facing an in-form Demons line-up might give the VFL a true indication of the reigning premier’s 2018 credentials.
KEY STATThe Borough is the VFL’s top handballing team and if any opposition side is going to shut down that style of play, it’s Casey – which ranks first in the competition for tackles per game. Demons pressure players James Munro and Corey Wagner are both in the VFL’s top 15 for total tackles and will look to bring the heat again in this game.

Multicultural AmbassadorsFresh from life in the AFL system, Footscray Peter Jackson VFL player Reuben William has stepped into a role as one of five VFL Multicultural Ambassadors for 2018.The 20-year-old former Brisbane rookie joins fellow ambassadors Goy Lok (Casey Demons), Michael Tang (North Melbourne), Brad Xavier (Werribee) and Akec Chuot (Carlton VFL Women’s) in giving young people with multicultural backgrounds a role model to identify with in Victoria’s premier football competitions.
William is the focus of the latest story in the ‘Identity’ series on vfl.com.au, where multicultural players in AFL Victoria’s competitions talk about their journey to Australian football.
A story on Goy Lok was launched on the VFL website earlier this year (search for ‘identity goy lok’), and in the latest story William also reflects on how he first got involved in football in Queensland aft er escaping to Australia from war-torn South Sudan as a child.
“There’s a soccer club across the road from my junior (football) club the Zillmere Eagles,” William recalled. “My brothers and I actually went to sign up to play soccer, but then Mum decided to check out what was across the road too and we ended up playing footy.
“We enjoyed it so much that it’s the only thing we’ve played ever since, pretty much.”

The best emerging talent in the Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup is on show in the AFL Victoria Young Guns Series.
AFL Victoria Young Guns Series
The series focuses on players aged 21 and under and will provide chances for squad members to further develop their game and showcase their skills in front of AFL recruiters. As the series progresses, there will be an opportunity to add talented community footballers to the squads.
The new Young Guns program is being overseen by VFL coaching games record holder Gerard FitzGerald, who brings 21 years of state-league football experience at VFL (North Ballarat, Casey, Port Melbourne) and TAC Cup (GWV Rebels) level to the role.

Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s preview – Round 4 We talk to Geelong Cats senior coach Paul Hood ahead of the VFL Women’s first AFL curtain-raiser clash against Carlton and take a look at the other matches in Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s Round 4.

GEELONG CATS vs CARLTON – Saturday 4.30pm @ GMHBA Stadium
FORM COMING IN
Geelong (2nd) remains undefeated, with two wins and a draw against Collingwood in between. Aft er two victories start to the season, Carlton (5th) suff ered its first loss last round against Hawthorn.
KEY QUESTION
Has Carlton’s midfield been exposed? Breann Moody has been the dominant ruck in the competition so far and has been giving the Blues midfield first use of the ball, but Carlton looked ordinary against the Hawks last week. Hawthorn trailed hitouts 36-50 but won the clearances 40-23. Centre clearances are an issue for the Blues with Jess Hosking and Nat Plane the only two Blues to notch one last week.
KEY STAT
Renee Garing was one of Geelong’s six VFLW players revealed to have signed to the club’s inaugural AFLW squad for 2019 last week and has been having a terrific VFLW season. Garing is averaging 30 disposals per game and is shaping as one of the dominant midfielders of the competition.
HOME CLUB’S PERSPECTIVE
Geelong Cats senior coach Paul Hood on the club’s first three games:
“We are really pleased with start of the season, but there is still plenty of improvement to go. We are far from playing our best footy at the moment and the rest of the competition is much the same.”
On Geelong players that have stood out so far this season:
“Renee Garing in the midfield is working really hard and applying pressure. Richelle Cranston is doing much the same and pushes us forward. Elise Coventry has been excellent in defence for us and Mia-Rae Cliff ord has been a great addition to our squad and brings a lot of leadership.”
On the opportunity for the Geelong players to play in a curtain-raiser for the AFL:
“It’s a great occasion. We are really looking forward to it, and to get out on an AFL ground on game-day will be very special.”
On the club signing six VFLW players to its 2019 AFLW squad:
“It’s fantastic for those VFLW girls, and alongside our four AFLW signings (from other AFLW clubs) coming from our VFLW team as well, that’s 10 players from our squad – and who knows, there could be a few more by the end of the season.”
The Geelong Cats stayed undefeated for 2018 with a win against Williamstown in Round 3

*ROUND 4 BYE – Hawthorn
DAREBIN FALCONS vs CASEY DEMONS – Saturday 12pm @ Bill Lawry Oval
FORM COMING IN
Following their first-round loss to the NT Thunder,
the Falcons (7th) responded to beat Richmond
before a Round 3 bye. Casey (10th) is still
searching for its first win, going down by slim
margins to both Hawthorn and then the Southern
Saints over the last fortnight.
KEY QUESTION
Can the Demons keep Darebin’s key forwards
quiet? Hannah Mouncey and Steph Simpson
troubled the Tigers’ defence in the Falcons’
Round 2 win, while Casey failed to stop Southern’s
forwards from stealing the game in a final-term
comeback last week. The defence will need to be
vigilant of Darebin’s two key forwards and pick
their match-ups carefully.
KEY STAT
The Demons failed to gain first use of the ball
against the Saints in Round 3, trailing in hitouts
44-22. With Casey’s primary ruck Taryn Orgill only
in her first season at VFLW level, she faces a tough
challenge pitted against seasoned AFLW star
Lauren Pearce.
MELBOURNE UNI vs NT THUNDER – Saturday 11.10am @ Avalon Airport Oval
FORM COMING IN
Melbourne Uni (8th) comes into Round 4 fresh off
the bye aft er starting the season with a loss and then
a win. NT Thunder (4th) remains undefeated aft er
wins against both Darebin and Essendon by over 50
points.
KEY QUESTION
Can the Mugars stop Thunder’s forward attack?
NT has looked unstoppable in its first two matches,
posting round-high scores of 86 and 96 respectively.
With the Thunder getting the ball inside 50 so many
times each game, scoring inevitably follows – Renee
Forth and Deni Varnhagen leading the charge with
seven inside-50s each against Essendon last round.
However, with Emma Kearney in the engine room
for Melbourne Uni, NT could face some strong
resistance.
KEY STAT
Thunder’s Angela Foley has started her VFLW season
with two impeccable performances, collecting 30
disposals, five tackles and a goal in Round 1 before
following up with 28 disposals, seven clearances and
two goals in Round 3.
VV
WESTERN BULLDOGS vs COLLINGWOOD – Saturday 2pm @ VU Whitten Oval
FORM COMING IN
The Bulldogs (13th) have started their season winless, losing to Richmond and then Carlton before having a bye last round. Collingwood (3rd) is undefeated, winning two games and drawing with the Geelong Cats.
KEY QUESTION
Will Jaimee Lambert or Hayley Wildes win out in the middle? Both midfielders had excellent 2018 AFLW seasons in their second years and have carried their form into the opening three rounds of the VFLW season. Lambert collected 24 disposals, seven tackles and two goals in Collingwood’s win against the Tigers last round, while Wildes has been the Bulldogs’ main midfielder in the opening two rounds in a team missing Ellie Blackburn.
KEY STAT
The Bulldogs have lacked forward options so far this season, kicking just 2.6 across their two games. The Magpies, however, have been able to find the goals consistently, kicking 19.20 across their three games, with Lambert the most dangerous in front of goal (three majors).

SOUTHERN SAINTS vs ESSENDON – Sunday 11.30am
@ Trevor Barker Beach Oval[vfl.com.au LIVE STREAM /
LIVE on Women’s Australian Rules Football Radio]
FORM COMING IN
The Saints (6th) made it two wins in a row aft er beating the Casey Demons last week to take their record to 2-1. The Bombers (12th) remain winless aft er three rounds and suff ered their biggest loss against NT Thunder last round.
KEY QUESTION
Can Essendon string four quarters together? The Bombers came out of nowhere to challenge the Thunder early in their Round 3 clash in Darwin, kicking four straight goals to lead by two points at quarter time but failing to score again as NT piled on the goals. It was Essendon’s best quarter of the season so far and the team should build on that eff ort to grab its first win of the season.
KEY STAT
Southern’s Ali Drennan has arguably been her team’s best player this season, standing out in both victories, including a performance of 22 disposals, 12 tackles and an important clutch goal in last week’s win against Casey. Bombers midfielders will need to be wary with Drennan teaming up with in-form ruck Rhiannon Watts, as Watts serves the ball to her teammate on a silver platter.

VFLW pride gamesWilliamstown’s Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s team will wear a special guernsey for the club’s ‘pride game’ against Richmond on Sunday. The clash with the Tigers at Williamstown Football
Ground will be preceded by a function that will focus
on celebrating diversity and promoting inclusiveness.
See the pride guernsey the Seagulls will wear on this
page.
The Southern Saints also wore a pride guernsey in
their victory over the Casey Demons last week, to
continue the St Kilda Football Club’s commitment to
ensuring football plays a role in helping shape a more
inclusive society. The rainbow-coloured numbers
on the pride guernsey can be seen in this week’s AFL
Victoria Record front cover image.
WILLIAMSTOWN vs RICHMOND – Sunday 2pm
@ Williamstown Football Ground
FORM COMING IN
Williamstown (11th) is still chasing its first win, suff ering losses to Collingwood, the Southern Saints and then the Geelong Cats last round. Richmond (9th) has lost its last two games, beaten by the Darebin Falcons and the Magpies aft er a win in Round 1 against the Western Bulldogs.
KEY QUESTION
Can the Seagulls improve enough to claim their first scalp? Williamstown had been able stay competitive in its first two rounds – only falling away in the final quarter – but the young side took a backwards step last round, managing only 0.4 against the Cats. The Seagulls will need to both start and finish strongly to get on top of the Tigers.
KEY STAT
Richmond’s vice-captain Kate Dixon looked dangerous in kicking four of her team’s six majors in the Round 1 win against the Bulldogs, but the Tigers have failed to get the ball forward with purpose over the last two weeks. Dixon has scored only a lone point in that time and Richmond has only managed two majors in total.
