How to get to the Melbourne Mobility Centre

The Melbourne Mobility Centre is an initiative of the City of Melbourne.

Melbourne Mobility Centre

The vision of Future Melbourne is to be a bold, inspirational and sustainable city in 2020. Eight key goals have been set and include our aim to ensure that Melbourne is an inclusive, accessible and equitable city where all people, irrespective of their abilities, can engage in their personal, community and civic life with independence.

The City of Melbourne in partnership with YMCA Victoria has developed the Active city guide in response to requests from community members for more information about accessibility in city sports and recreation venues. Active city – sport and recreation access guide provides key access information for 34 sports and recreation venues within the municipality for people with mobility, vision and hearing impairment challenges.

This guide was developed in consultation with people with disabilities who provided input into what they consider to be the most relevant and useful information when determining a suitable sport and recreation venue to visit.

Each sport and recreation venue is described according to these considerations, including access to the main entry, any specifi c services provided for people with disabilities, toilets and parking.

The venues listed have volunteered to be involved in the guide and while the level of access does vary between venues, all those involved support the philosophy and concept of access for all.

We hope you will fi nd this guide useful in planning your next sport and recreation activity within the City of Melbourne.

Active city – sport and recreation access guide is funded through the MetroAccess initiative, a partnership between the City of Melbourne and the Department of Human Services.

The City of Melbourne wishes to thank and acknowledge YMCA Victoria for contributing to the development of this guide.

Issues considered

Australian Standards for Access and Mobility (AS 1428)AS 1428 prescribes the basic requirements for physical access which should be considered in the planning, development and construction of buildings and facilities, including recreation venues. For a variety of reasons, not all premises currently comply with these standards. Listing of a sport and recreation venue and its facilities in this guide does not imply that the venue currently meets the requirements for access, as required under AS 1428. Rather, this guide is intended to provide potential customers with information that can assist them to choose a venue that fi ts in with their individual requirements.

ToiletsIdentifi cation of the provision of a designated accessible toilet does not necessarily mean that the toilet complies with current AS 1428 requirements. It indicates that there is a toilet on the premises that displays the international

symbol of access and the cubicle may be of a larger size than a standard toilet cubicle. Appropriate fi xtures and fi ttings may not be installed to ensure full access. Potential patrons should check with the management to ascertain further details if required.

Change and shower facilitiesIdentifi cation of the provision of a designated accessible change/shower facility does not necessarily mean that the facility complies with current AS 1428 requirements. It indicates that there is a change/shower facility on the premises that displays the international symbol of access and the cubicle may be of a larger size than a standard shower facility. Appropriate fi xtures and fi ttings may not be installed to ensure full access. Potential patrons should check with the management to ascertain further details if required.

Important information before using this guide

Car parkingUnless specifi ed, public on-street parking or o site car parking only, is available. Where possible, information has been provided regarding proximity of designated accessible parking to each venue listed in the guide. Identifi cation of the provision of a designated accessible parking bay does not necessarily mean that the bay complies with current AS 1428 requirements. It indicates that there is a parking bay that displays the international symbol of access.

Changes of levelLifts or ramps are noted, if installed. Otherwise stair only access is provided.

Wheelchair or scooter recharge pointThe availability of a power point within the premises for use by a person to recharge a wheelchair or scooter has been included.

Patrons would need to provide any other equipment such as transformers that they may require to recharge their particular mobility aid.

Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK)A MLAK system, where installed, will allow access to public amenities for a person with a disability where facilities are otherwise locked. Contact City of Melbourne or the MLAK provider for details.

DisclaimerAn access audit has not been undertaken of the premises listed in the guide and Access Audits Australia, the City of Melbourne and YMCA Victoria do not take responsibility for any omissions, errors or actions taken as a result of the information provided, or any decisions made by patrons based on this information.
