2.4 Cloning your hard drive WhydoIneedit?Whenyouseethatthefreespaceonyourharddriveisnotenoughforyourdata,youmightwanttobuyanew,largerharddriveandtransferallyourdatatothenewdrive.Theusualcopyoperationdoesnotmakeyournewharddriveidenticaltotheoldone.Forexample,ifyouopenWindowsExplorerandcopyallfilesandfolderstothenewharddrive,Windowswillnotstartfromthenewharddrive.TheClonediskutilityallowsyoutoduplicateallyourdataandmakeWindowsbootableonyournewharddrive.

AcronisTrueImageHDdoesbothbycreatingdisk(orpartition)imagesandfile-levelbackupsrespectively.
BackupversionsBackupversionsarethefileorfilescreatedduringeachbackupoperation.Ifyoudonotuseconsolidationfeature,theamountofversionscreatedisalwaysequaltotheamountoftimesthebackupisexecutedortotheamountofstoredpointsintime.
So,aversionrepresentsapointintimetowhichthesystemordatacanberestored.Toputitanotherway,backupversionsrepresentfullandincrementalbackups-seeFullandincrementalbackups(p.18).
Thebackupversionsaresimilartofileversions.ThefileversionsconceptisfamiliartothosewhouseaWindowsVistaandWindows7featurecalled"Previousversionsoffiles".Thisfeatureallowsyoutorestoreafileasitexistedonaparticulardateandtime.Abackupversionallowsyoutorecoveryourdatainasimilarway.
Thiscouldbeusefulwhentryingtofinddamagedordeletedfiles.SimplybrowsethroughthebackupversionsintheAcronisBackupExploreruntilyoufindthebackupversioncontainingtherequiredfiles.Additionally,youcanrecoverdifferentsavedversionsofthefoundfiles.

DiskcloningThisoperationmigratesorcopiestheentirecontentsofonediskdrivetoanotherdiskdrive.Thismaybenecessary,forexample,wheninstallingalargercapacitydisk.Theresultistwoidenticaldriveswiththesamefilestructure.The"DiskClone"tooleffectivelycopiesallofthecontentsofoneharddiskdriveontoanotherharddiskdrive.Theoperationallowsyoutotransferalltheinformation(includingtheoperatingsystemandinstalledprograms)fromoneharddiskdrivetoanotherwithouthavingtoreinstallandreconfigureallofyoursoftware.
AcronisTrueImageHDdoesnotprovideforcloningasinglepartition.Youcanonlyclonetheentiredrive.
Youcanalsotransferalltheinformationfromyourharddiskdrivetoanotheronebybackinguptheentireoldharddiskandthenrecoveringthebackuptothenewdisk.
BackupvalidationThebackupvalidationfeatureallowsyoutoconfirmthatyourdatacanberecovered.Asmentionedabove,theprogramaddschecksumvaluestothedatablocksbeingbackedup.Duringbackupvalidation,AcronisTrueImageHDopensthebackupfile,recalculatesthechecksumvaluesandcomparesthosevalueswiththestoredones.Ifallcomparedvaluesmatch,thebackupfileisnotcorruptedandthereisahighprobabilitythatthebackupcanbesuccessfullyusedfordatarecovery.
ConsolidationConsolidationallowsyoutodeletebackupswhichyounolongerneedfromabackupchain.
Achaintobeconsolidatedcanconsistofafullbackupandoneormoreincrementalbackups.
Ifnecessary,youcandeletethebasefullbackupfromthechain.Theprogramwillcreateanewfullbackupinplaceoftheoldestremainingbackup.Consolidationkeepswhicheverbackupsyouchooseanddeletesanybackupsthatarenotselected.
Becauseconsolidationmayrequiresignificanttimeandsystemresources(includingdiskspace),werecommendusingitsparingly.Inmanycases,startinganewbackupchainandthendeletingtheoldonewillbeabetterchoice.
DisasterrecoveryRecoveringfromadisasterusuallyrequiresarescuemediaandabackupofthesystempartition.
AcronisTrueImageHDprovidesforrecoveryfromadisastercausedbysystemdatacorruption,viruses,malware,orothercauses.
Iftheoperatingsystemfailstoboot,AcronisTrueImageHDwillrecoverthesystempartition.YoucancreatearescuemediabyusingtheMediaBuildertool.
SchedulingForyourbackupstobereallyhelpful,theymustbeas"up-to-date"aspossible.Thismeansthatyoushouldrunbackupsonaregularbasis.AlthoughcreatinganAcronisTrueImageHDbackupisquiteeasy,onoccasion,youmayforgettodoabackup.
Withthescheduler,youdonothavetoremember.Youcanscheduleautomaticbackupsaheadoftime.Yourdatawillbebackedupaslongasthereissufficientstoragespace.

3.2 The difference between file backups and disk/partition images
Whenyoubackupfilesandfolders,onlythefilesandfoldertreearecompressedandstored.
Disk/partitionbackupsaredifferentfromfileandfolderbackups.AcronisTrueImagestoresanexactsnapshotofthediskorpartition.Thisprocedureiscalled"creatingadiskimage",or"creatingadiskbackup"andtheresultingbackupisoftencalled"adisk/partitionimage"or"adisk/partitionbackup".
Adisk/partitionbackupcontainsallthedatastoredonthediskorpartition:
1. Zerotrackoftheharddiskwiththemasterbootrecord(MBR)(applicabletoMBRdiskbackupsonly).
2. Oneormorepartitions,including:1. Bootcode.2. Filesystemmetadata,includingservicefiles,fileallocationtable(FAT)andpartitionboot
record.3. Filesystemdata,includingoperatingsystem(systemfiles,registry,drivers),userdataand

BydefaultAcronisTrueImagestoresonlytheharddisksectorsthatcontaindata.Furthermore,AcronisTrueImagedoesnotbackuppagefile.sysunderWindowsXPandlaterandhiberfil.sys(afilethatkeepsRAMcontentswhenthecomputergoesintohibernation).Thisreducesimagesizeandspeedsupimagecreationandrecovery.
Youcanchangethisdefaultmethodbyturningonthesector-by-sectormode.InthiscaseAcronisTrueImagecopiesallharddisksectors,andnotonlythosethatcontaindata.
3.3 Full, incremental and differential backups Note:Incrementalanddifferentialbackupsarenotavailableinthisproductedition.
AcronisTrueImageHDoffersyouthreebackupmethods:
1)Full:containsallofthedataatthemomentofthebackupcreation.Itformsabaseforfurtherincrementalordifferentialbackups.Itcanalsobeusedasastandalonebackup.
2)Incremental:OnlythosefileswillbeincludedwhichhavebeenchangedsincetheLASTbackup.
3)Differential:OnlythosefileswillbeincludedwhichhavebeenchangedsincethelastFULLbackup.
Wesuggestyoutochooseoneofthefollowingthreeapproachesofusingthebackupmethods:
"Full"-Astandalonefullbackupmightbeanoptimalsolutionifyouoftenrollbackthesystemtoitsinitialstateorifyoudonotliketomanagemultiplefiles.
"Incremental"-Thesearemostusefulwhenyouneedfrequentbackupsandtheabilitytorollbacktoaspecificpointintime.Havingcreatedafullbackuponce,ifyouthencreateanincrementalbackupeachdayofamonth,youwillgetthesameresultasifyoucreatedfullbackupseverydayofthemonth.Asarule,incrementalbackupsareconsiderablysmallerthanfullordifferentialbackups.

Suchabackupscenariomayconsistofaweeklyfullsystembackupwithintermediate,dailybackupsthatcoverdatathatwaschangedsincetheLASTbackup.Thisscenario,whilerequiringlessstoragespaceandtimeforthedailybackups,willrequiremoreworkfortheprogramtoproviderecoveryafterasystemcrash.IntheeventofaThursdaycrash,theprogramwouldhavetorecovertheWednesday,Tuesday,andMondayincrementalbackupsandthelastFULLbackup.
"Differential"–isanintermediatebetweenthefirsttwoapproaches.Eachdifferentialbackupincludesallthefileschangedsincethelastfullbackup.Ittakeslesstimeandspacethan"Full",butmorethan"Incremental".Thegoodthingisthatrecoveringissimplerthanfor(2)-theprogramwillhavetorecoverthelastdifferentialbackupandthelastfullbackup.
Tochooseadesiredbackupmethod,youusuallyneedtoconfigureacustombackupscheme.FormoreinformationseeCustomschemes(p.26).
Anincrementalordifferentialbackupcreatedafteradiskisdefragmentedmightbeconsiderablylargerthanusual.Thisisbecausethedefragmentationprogramchangesfilelocationsonthediskandthebackupsreflectthesechanges.Therefore,itisrecommendedthatyoure-createafullbackupafterdiskdefragmentation.
Ifyouloseanincrementalbackuporitbecomescorrupted,alllaterincrementalbackupswillbeunusable.

4.2.9 Backup comment Thisoptionallowsyoutoaddcommentstothebackup.Backupcommentsmayhelpyoutofindthenecessarybackuplater,whenrecoveringdatabyusingbootablemedia.
Ifabackupdoesnothavecomments,typeyourcommentinthecommentsarea.Whenacommentalreadyexists,youcanedititafterclickingEdit.
4.2.10 Error handling Whentheprogramencounteredanerrorwhileperformingbackup,itstopsthebackupprocessanddisplaysamessage,waitingforaresponseonhowtohandletheerror.Ifyousetanerrorhandlingpolicy,theprogramwillnotstopthebackupprocess,butwillsimplyhandletheerroraccordingtothesetrulesandcontinueworking.
Youcansetthefollowingerrorhandlingpolicy:

Youcanspecifysecuritysettingsforbackedupfiles(thesesettingsrelateonlytofile/folderbackups):
§ Preservefilesecuritysettingsinbackups-selectingthisoptionwillpreserveallthesecurityproperties(permissionsassignedtogroupsorusers)ofthebackupfilesforfurtherrecovery. Bydefault,filesandfoldersaresavedinthebackupwiththeiroriginalWindowssecuritysettings(i.e.permissionsforread,write,executeandsoonforeachuserorusergroup,setinfileProperties->Security).Ifyourecoverasecuredfile/folderonacomputerwithouttheuserspecifiedinthepermissions,youmaynotbeabletoreadormodifythisfile.Toeliminatethiskindofproblem,youcandisablepreservingfilesecuritysettingsinbackups.Thentherecoveredfiles/folderswillalwaysinheritthepermissionsfromthefoldertowhichtheyarerecovered(parentfolderordisk,ifrecoveredtotheroot).Or,youcandisablefilesecuritysettingsduringrecovery,eveniftheyareavailableinthebackup.Theresultwillbethesame.
