Shellac

Shellac, the only known commercial resin of animal origin, is a hard, tough, amorphous and easily brittle resinous solid. It is practically odorless in the cold, but evolves a characteristic smell on heating or melting . Superior grades are light yellow in color, while the inferior grades range from deep orange brown to almost dark red. The resin is associated with coloring matter, odoriferous principles and varying quantity of wax. Lac resin entirely free from these associates is unknown although commercially available Dewaxed and decolorized lac is the closest approximation.

Shellac dissolves readily in alcohol and organic acids. The most popular solvent of shellac is spirit.

The shellac produced is normally allowed to cool off after stretching for a few hours and then transferred to a cool-shedded godown. It is best stored in air-conditioned ware-houses which maintains a temperature between 14-18oC.

Shellac: A Natural Product

Shellac is secreted onto a branch by insects smaller than a grain of rice. It takes a tremendous number of these insects to create a pound of useable shellac

Shellac Flakes

Shellac Flakes

Shellac is perfect for antique restoration, furniture refinishing, casework, architectural woodwork, toys and general woodworking. Also used in fruit coating, pharmaceutical industry, lather industry, confectionery and candy industries, cosmetic industry, printing industry, electrical and electronics Indusrty,Food packaging industry and many more .

Seedlac

Seedlac is obtained from sticklac .Sticklac crushed and sieved to remove sand and dust. It is then washed in large vats again and again and at the same time rubbing the lac against the sides of the Vat to break open the insect bodies and dissolving the coloring matter in water.

Seedlac is mostly used for conversion into Bleached Shellac and different types of Shellac.

Shellac Buttons

The shellac is refined in stages and becomes lighter in color and more transparent. Brown Seedlac is first refined into "Button Lac," so called because it is poured out into disks for easy handling.

Bleached Shellac

Bleached shellac are Non-Toxic, physiologically harmless (edible), and is being used widely in food industries, food packaging and allied industries.

It is being used in Binding, Adhesive, Hardening, Gloss, Odorless, Fast Drying, extending Shelf Life (in absence of refrigeration) etc. Clear, transparent or very light colored alcoholic or water – alkali solutions can be obtained from Bleached shellac

Shellac Properties

(1)Shellac dissolves in a wide variety of alkaline or rapidly drying alcoholic solvents, but is resistant to a number of other solvents, particularly hydrocarbons.

(2)Its films show excellent adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces, possessing high gloss, hardness and strength.

(3)shellac is a powerful bonding material with low thermal conductivity and a small coefficient and expansion. Its thermal plasticity and capacity of absorbing large amounts of filters are noteworthy.

(4) Its electrical properties include high dielectric strength, low dielectric constant and characteristic freedom from tracking.

(5) It is resistant to the action of ultraviolet rays.

(6) Shellac is non-poisonous.
