“For the Future of Haywood County”

Our write up on the Daniels family brought in a lot of other information on the background and burial places of this family. Minnie Bridgewater Wilson brought by a copy of her Daniels line. Barry Daniels was very pleased with all the information he received to share with his children.

James and Linda Barrett from Hot Springs, Arkansas visited the Genie Room last month researching the Barrett and Taliaferro lines. They will be furnishing us a copy of both these lines when she has them completed. They were happy with all the information we had on our Taliaferro line. They also visited some of the cemeteries while in Brownsville. We enjoyed our visit and welcome them again.

A request from Donna Rollins needing information on John McComal who married Molly Rose in Haywood County 10 Feb 1890. If anyone has any information on this family, please let us hear

from you. I have searched and cannot fi nd anything in our fi les on McComal. I found a Rose family who were early settlers but could not trace Molly back to them.

Mike Vance of Texas is trying to locate the probate record of Sidon John Harris (b.1780 NC) who died about 1855 in Haywood County. We have a fi le on the Harris family but do not have a copy of the probate record. I have searched through the microfi lm with no results. Does anyone out there have the exact date of death? If so, it would make it easier to fi nd. He was born in Burke County, North Carolina and a veteran of 1812. He moved to Overton County, Tennessee before 1820 and by 1830, he was living in Madison County. 3 Mar 1855 at age seventy-fi ve, he applied for his Bounty Land for Creek Indian War Service. At that time he was living in Haywood County, 16 miles SE of Brownsville.

19 Nov 1858, 160 acres of land was issued for

his service. We cannot fi nd a burial record in Haywood County. I believe he had relatives living in Madison County and could have been buried there. Our records indicate he was married to Margaret Crockett or Hawkins, sister of John Crockett or his wife Rebecca Hawkins, parents of David Crockett. Our fi le shows they had 7 children that have not been verifi ed.

They show John Harris (b.1812 TN) and our

records indicate he died 6 Mar 1836 at the Siege of Alamo with David Crockett in Texas.

Sidon H. (b.1820 TN d.1861 TX); Alfred; David; Barbara b. 1822; Edith; Elizabeth.

Mike needs your help on this family as he is not completely certain all these children actually belong to Sidon and Margaret.

On Monday, Speaker Emeritus Jimmy Naifeh (D-Haywood & Tipton Counties) announced the fi fth annual Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday would take place beginning Friday, August 6 and continuing through Sunday, August 8. Tennessee shoppers will have three full days of tax breaks on clothing, school and art supplies, and computer purchases.

“This annual opportunity for parents and students to save money on school supplies helps put dollars back in the pockets of working families,” said Naifeh. “However, everyone in the state can take advantage of the savings and that’s what makes this weekend great for all Tennesseans.”

The holiday begins Friday, August 6 at 12:01 a.m. and ends Sunday, August 8 at 11:59 p.m. During the designated three-day weekend, consumers will not pay state or local sales tax on select clothing with

a price of $100 or less per item, school and art supplies with a price of $100 or less per item, and computers with a price of $1,500 or less, a savings of nearly 10 percent on exempt items.

Examples of exempt items include:

· Clothing: Shirts, dresses, pants, coats, gloves and mittens, hats and caps, hosiery, neckties, belts, sneakers, shoes, uniforms whether athletic or non-athletic and scarves

· School Supplies: Binders, book bags, calculators, tape, chalk, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, notebooks, paper, rulers and scissors

· Art Supplies: Clay and glazes; acrylic, tempera and oil paints; paintbrushes for artwork; sketch and drawing pads; and watercolors

· Computers: Central processing unit (CPU), along with various other components including monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables

to connect components and preloaded software (Note: While the CPU may be purchased separately, other items must be part of a bundled computer package in order to be eligible.)

“People all across Tennessee could use a fi nancial break and this sales tax holiday provides that relief,” said Naifeh. “The Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday helps put taxpayer money back into the pockets of taxpayers and there’s absolutely nothing wrong

with that.” Please visit the Sales

Tax Holiday Web site at www.tntaxholiday.com to learn more about the items exempt from sales tax. The Tennessee Department of Revenue also assists consumers via e-mail, [email protected], and through its toll-free statewide telephone hot line, (800) 342-1003. Staff is available to answer questions Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time.

Speaker Emeritus Naifeh announces sales tax holiday August 6-8. Exemptions include clothing, school supplies, art resources and

personal computers
