Causes of Hurricanes“Hurricanes can develop when the sun’s rays heat tropical waters to at least 82 degrees

Fahrenheit. This causes the air to grow warmer and raise becoming wind and the wind becomes a hurricane when it reaches speeds of more than 74 miles (120 km) per hour.”(FORCES OF NATURE: TQ 2000 1st PARAGRAPH) Hurricanes are caused and formed by warm and cold currents. Most of the time it is warm

currents circulating in the ocean causing waves and then soon forming into a hurricane by the fierce winds applying force on the waves. It gets stronger and tougher.

A Forming Hurricane

“The moist, hot winds of a hurricane swirl upward around a calm column of low-pressure air known as the eye. Some hurricanes can develop more than one eye, but the largest is always the main eye and measures an average of 15 miles across.” (FORCES OF NATURE: TQ 2000 2nd PARAGRAPH)

There are many types of hurricanes. Minimal being the smallest damaging hurricane to Catastrophic, the highest damaging hurricane. Minimal hurricanes’ damages unanchored mobile homes, vegetation and signs. Catastrophic hurricanes destroys most buildings and vegetation. Major roads are cut off and homes are flooded.

Inherently, a front has a cyclonic spin associated with it.”(TropicalWeather.net 5th PARAGRAPH)“Again, by far, easterly waves cause most hurricanes to form in the Atlantic Ocean. Research has

shown about 60% of hurricanes and 85% of major hurricanes form from easterly waves. Otherwise, most hurricanes are caused by the monsoon trough around the globe." (TropicalWeather.net 7th PARAGRAPH)

Hurricanes are usually formed near the equator. That’s why our state Florida(A peninsula: having waters around 3 sides of a state) gets many storms due to our link with ocean water.

Effects of Hurricanes“Hurricane winds blow down trees and bring the seas up on shore. People gave hurricanes a

rating of twelve or more and said that they caused great damage and widespread destruction.”(Alth p3-11)

In a hurricane, the side walls of the roof(end gables) take a real beating and can collapse. The exterior walls, doors, and windows are the protective shell of your home if the shell is broken during a hurricane high winds can enter the home and put pressure on the roof and walls causing serious damage. If the garage door fails, winds can enter your home and blow out doors, windows, walls, and the roof.

Effects of Hurricanes “Hurricanes have many terrible and disastrous effects. They can destroy many homes, possessions, businesses, and injure many citizens.”(Alth p54)

Hurricanes and tropical storms can also produce tornadoes. These tornadoes most often occur in thunderstorms usually tornadoes produced by tropical cyclones are relatively weak and short- lived, but still pose a threat. Flooding and extreme winds can be seen during the act of a hurricane. Hurricane-force winds, 74 mph or more, can destroy buildings and mobile homes. Debris(signs, roofing material, sidings, and small items left outside, etc.) become flying missiles in hurricanes. Winds can stay above hurricane strength well inland.
