A little American History...
The year is 1774. American colonists
are strongly protesting British invasions of their
rights…
…and in September the first
Continental Congress is
convened as a response to British
encroachments.
Also in 1774 in Northampton,
Mass., eighteen Baptists are sitting
in jail. Their crime?
Their crime?
Refusing to pay taxes for the
support of the town’s
Congregational Minister!
As the Apostle Paul writes 2 Timothy,He is sitting in jail
as well!
2 Timothy 4:6-8
6 For I am already being poured out
as a drink offering, and the time of my
departure is at hand. 7 I have
fought the good fight…
…I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is
laid up for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord…
…the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day,
and not to me only but also to all who
have loved His appearing.
A Courageous Faith
The Apostle Paul is sitting in a Roman
prison!
A Courageous Faith
Waiting for his probable
execution!
A Courageous Faith
He realizes thismay be his final
letter to the church!
A Courageous Faith
He challengesTimothy and all believers to two
things...
One More Thing
The Apostle Paul writes of Timothy’s
Mother (Eunice) and Grandmother
(Lois)
One More Thing
Calls Timothy ‘a beloved son’
(agapetos teknon)
One More Thing
Could it be that Timothy may havenot had a father
present!
Continue to Be Faithful to the ‘Testimony’of the Lord!
‘Testimony’
God has given us a ‘pattern of sound words’
2 Timothy 2:11-13
This is a faithful saying: ‘For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. If we endure, We shall also reign
with Him.
If we deny Him, He also will deny
us. If we are faithless, He
remains faithful; He cannot deny
Himself.
Continue to Be Faithful in
‘Sufferings’for the Lord!
‘Sufferings’
God has calledus to ‘suffer
these things’
2 Timothy 1:6-8
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God
which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not
given us…
…a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 8
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me…
…His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for
the gospel according to the power of God.”
A CourageousFaith will always embrace these
two distinctions!
2 Timothy 4:3-5
“For the time will come when they will not endure
sound doctrine, but according to their
own desires…
…because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves
teachers; and they will turn their ears
away from the truth…
…but you be watchful in all things endure
afflictions, do the work of an
evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
…and be turnedaside to fables.”
A Courageous Faith will not succumb to
such an end!
