Choice of GutterThere are a number of points toconsider when choosing a guttersystem for a particular building. Thecarrying capacity of a system is ofprime importance, but one must alsoconsider the colour and profiles bestsuited to enhance the building, theease of installation and possiblesubsequent extension or alteration, and whether one uses square orround downpipes.
Design DirectivesIrish Building Regulations 1997requirements are set out in TechnicalGuidance Document H, Drainage andWaste Disposal, sub-section 1.5(Surface Water Drainage).
U.K. Building Regulations 2000requirements are set out in ApprovedDocument H, Drainage and WasteDisposal, part H3 RainwaterDrainage, 2002 Edition.
BS EN 12056-3: 2000 - gravitydrainage inside buildings: roofdrainage layout and calculation, givesdetailed recommendations on designand should be consulted if conditionsother than normal are expected.
Rainfall IntensityIt is generally accepted that thecalculation of roof drainage is basedon a rainfall intensity of 75mm perhour. Statistics show that rainfall ofhigher intensity has beenexperienced rarely and for very shortperiods of time. This factor, however, should be considered if it isimperative that overflow be totallyavoided.
Effective Roof AreaIn the case of a flat roof (includingsloping roofs of less than 10° pitch)the effective roof area is the area onplan of the portion of roof to bedrained. For pitched roofs, however, allowance must be made for thevarying angles of rainfall whichincreases its intensity.
The method of calculation fordetermining the area of such roofs isas follows:-L = Length of RoofH = Vertical height of RoofW = Width of Roof sectionEffective roof area M2 = (L x W) + (L x )
Rainfall Run-offTo calculate the rainfall run-off inlitres per second it is necessarysimply to multiply the Effective RoofArea by a factor of 0.0208 (based ona rainfall intensity of 75mm perhour).
Carrying CapacityThere are a number of factorsaffecting the carrying capacity ofgutters. The principal ones arewhether or not the gutters are laid toa fall and whether the outlet isplaced at the centre of the run or atone end. Flow rates are also affectedby the type and configuration of thedownpipe system being used and,for the purpose of our calculations, all figures shown in the performancetable are based on using 68mmcircular downpipe with a 300mm offset, fitted with unsealed joints directly to the gutter outlet.
Thermal MovementThe coefficient of linear expansion ofPVCu is 6 x 10-5/°C which meansthat gutters and downpipes mayexpand or contract up to 0.6mm permetre per 10°C change oftemperature. All gutter systemscontained in this brochure havebeen designed to take account ofthis movement. It is important, therefore, that these systems areinstalled in accordance withinstallation instructions on pages 18& 19.
Snow LoadingAll of the gutter systems in thisbrochure have been subjected tosimulated snow loading tests as, orsimilar to, the test for resistance toload detailed in BS4576: Part 1 andperform in excess of requirements.Recommendation for installations inareas of severe snowfall, where itmay be necessary to fit snow boardsat eaves of pitched roofs to protectagainst damage or injury, are givenin BS EN 12056-3: 2000.

Chemical PropertiesPVCu gutter systems are corrosionfree and because they are selfcoloured, they will never requirepainting. If, however, paintingshould be desired, an oil basedalkyd paint is recommended(standard gloss paint). Timberfascias which have been treatedwith wood preservative should beallowed to dry thoroughly beforefixing gutter systems.
HandlingPVCu gutters and pipes are strong, though lightweight, and aretherefore easily handled. However, reasonable care should be exercisedwhilst handling in extremely coldconditions. It is advantageous topreserve the appearance of theseattractive self-coloured materials. When products are delivered to site, therefore, they should, preferably,be placed inside a storage building.
StorageGutters and pipes should be wellsupported on suitable racks.Dividing the framework or shelvesinto sections helps to segregatedifferent products and preventsoverloading and possible distortionof bottom layers.
Pipes and gutter bundles should bestacked no more than seven high. Ifit is necessary to store in the openfor long periods, or if products are tobe exposed to strong sunlight, theyshould be covered with an opaquesheet. Fittings supplied in cardboardboxes or polythene bags should bestored under cover and kept packeduntil required.
Solvent cement must be securelystored in a cool place out of directsunlight and away from any heatsource.

The notch technique of jointinghalf-round gutters has been usedsuccessfully for many years andis well proven. The 100mm and125mm half-round systemsboth have an integral socketmoulded on one end of eachlength of gutter. A flexible PVCustrap is employed to compressthe spigot on to the syntheticrubber seal, which is factorysecured to the socket. (Fig. 1)The Deepflow and Industrialsystems are also notched butthey are assembled usingspecial integrally-mouldedretaining nibs on all fittingswhich, together with the factory-fitted synthetic rubber seals, make site-assembly simple andensures a watertight joint. (Fig. 2)
Thermal MovementThe notch technique, when correctlyexecuted as indicated, ensures thatthe system cannot pull apart but stillprovides for expansion andcontraction resulting from changesin temperature and climaticconditions.

The Flowline, Classic,Clipmaster and Minilinesystems are plain ended guttersand are jointed to the fittingssimply by engaging one edge ofthe gutter under the factory-fitted clip on the fitting andexerting downward pressure onthe other edge, therebycompressing the gutter againstthe seal to form a watertightjoint. An insertion depth isclearly marked on each fittingand the gutter end should notproject beyond this point.
Fit Gutter up to insertion depth
Thermal MovementCertain key fittings incorporatescrew fixing points on the back edgeand must be screwed to the fascia. When installed in this way, the jointcannot pull apart and will absorb theexpansion and contraction resultingfrom variations in temperature.
Stop ends must be fitted only toshort lengths of gutter, i.e. within300mm of an adjacent fitting.
