Tissue Engineering is a hot new fieldScience, Feb 8, 2002, p1009
Griffith and Naughton of MIT….. “Tissue engineering can be used to restore, maintain or enhance tissues and organs. The potential impact of this field, however, is far broader – in the future, engineered tissues could reduce the need for organ replacement and could greatly accelerate the development of new drugs that may cure patients, eliminating the need for organ transplants altogether.”
Challenges: Adequate source of expendable cells Optimization of scaffolds Creation of bioreactors which simulate the environment of
the body and can be scaled-up Preservation of the product (microcirculation)

Where can you get graduate education in these biotech fields?
Funny you should ask?
UC Davis has programs in all of these areas!!!!

Phyllis Wise, new Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences at UC Davis
shares her Vision(Dateline, Feb 1, 2002)
Q: Regarding biological sciences, in what areas do you think UC Davis can contribute most substantially to the state and beyond?
A: “ Davis hosts the Biotechnology Program (and) the UC-wide Biotechnology Research and Education Program (UCBREP). We are excited about the new genome building and the focus on genomics.
The four areas of genomics, proteomics, biotechnology and bioinformatics impinge on every section of the division.
And I think the state economy will be enhanced by our ability to contribute.”

The DEB is an inter-graduate group program that allows Ph.D. students to receive and be credited for training in the area of biotechnology and/or bioinformatics. See www.deb.ucdavis.edu
Students come from a wide array of disciplines: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Chem Engineering, Agriculture and Environmental Chemistry, Statistics, Comparative Pathology, Food Science, Biomedical Engineering, etc.
Mission: to explore biotechnology through seminars and courses and examine the relationship of academia to industry through internships.
This program supplements a student's Ph.D. curriculum. Those completing the DEB program will obtain an official designation on their transcript indicating a qualification in biotechnology.
