Method of oxidizing reduced cysteine- containing microbially produced synthetic pro- teins, such as synthetic IFN- beta or synthetic IL-2, in a controlled manner so that the synthetic proteins have the same disulfide bridging as their native counterparts. The oxidation employs o- iodosobenzoate as oxidizing agent and is carried out in an aqueous medium at a pH at least about one-half pH unit less than the pKa of the cysteines to be oxidized, a synthetic protein con- centration ofless than about 5 mg/ml, and an ox- idizing agent:protein mol ratio that is at least stoichiometric, provided that the oxidizing agent is in excess in the terminal portion of the reac- tion.

Viable cells of an avirulent self-clearing strain of B. bronchiseptica are administered as an intra- respiratory vaccine. An aqueous suspension of the cells is applied to the respiratory mucosa im- mediately after incorporating a non-inhibitory

amount of a wetting agent promoting the mucosal implantation of the cells. Effective im- munization can thereby be obtained against dis- eases such as kennel cough in dogs and atrophic rhinitis in swine even through the strain of B. bronchiseptica is so highly attenuated that it is seff-clearing from the respiratory mucosa.

Recombinant DNA molecules and hosts trans- formed with them which produce polypeptides displaying a biological or immunological ac- tivity of human interferon, the gene coding for these polypeptides and methods of making and using these molecules, hosts, genes and poly- peptides. The recombinant DNA molecules are characterized by structural genes that code for a polypeptide displaying a biological or im- mulogical activity of human interferon. In ap- propriate hosts tbes¢ molecules permit the production and identification of genes and poly- peptides displaying a biological or immuno- logical activity of human interferon and their use in antiviral and antitumor or anticaneer agents.

Antibodies and antigens are disclosed which provide a method of detecting and a method of combating flukes. A diagnostic method for the determination of an active fluke infection in a warm-blooded animal is provided which com- prises the testing of body serum or body fluids for the presence of fluke spine glycoprotein or anti-spine antibodies. Fused cell hybrids ATCC HB-8086, ATCC HB-8087 and ATCC HB-8088, as well as the antibodies produced by the fused cell hybrids, are also provided.
