4 Survey planning70Thekeytoaneffectivesurveyistheplanning.Thedegreeofplanningandpreparationwilldependontheextentandcomplexityofthebuildingportfolio.Single,simpleone-storeyfactorybuildingswillbedifferentfromaschooloralargehospitalcomplex.Surveysonsiteswithmanyandvariabletypesofbuildingswillneedconsiderableplanningandprioritising.Theprinciplestobeusedinplanning/structuringandconductingthesurveywillbesimilarinallcases.Thesurveyisnotaboutjustturningupandtakingsamples.Thereneedstobeasufficientinitialexchangeofinformationbetweenthedutyholderorclientandthesurveyorandaclearunderstandingbybothpartiesofwhatisrequired.Theinformationwillbeusedtoformthecontractbetweenthedutyholderandthesurveyorincludingwherethesurveyisperformedin-house.
