The Stevie Awards Experience from a Judge’s Perspective
I had the honor of chairing the 2017 Employer of theYear/HR Team Awards Judging Committee this year after our organization, The Word & Brown Companies, receivedthe prestigious Stevie Award for Employer of the Year—Insurance last year.
I was impressed by the wide variety of companies from allover the world that submitted entries this year, and by learningabout the many innovative—and often fun—programs thatcompanies put in place to create and foster a positive workenvironment for their employees.
It is clear that HR professionals play a critical role in thesuccess of companies by the innovative ways they attract andretain top quality talent. It is not sufficient to have a greatproduct and service unless you also have a strong, happy, and healthy workforce. Nor is it sufficient these days to simplyprovide a paycheck: employees want to feel empowered, appreciated, and recognized for their contributions. Theywant opportunities for growth, yet they also want to work for acompany that understands the importance of a good work/lifebalance and that supports a healthy lifestyle.
Many of the outstanding candidates this year providedsuch an environment. Take Wayfair, for example. Who hasn’tshopped on their website to get something fabulous for theirhome? I know I have! I shop on Wayfair all the time, and their
service is fantastic. But it was so refreshing to see that not onlydo they provide great service to their customers, but they alsoprovide equally outstanding service to their employees. Wayfairemployees are empowered to succeed through their manyinternal Learn@Work programs; a generous Wellness programthat provides fitness classes and free healthy snacks; communi-ty charitable involvement; monthly employee events to buildcamaraderie; and they even got to write, produce, and per-form in a recent Wayfair television ad. That is awesome!
Like Wayfair, there are so many other employers who, together with their fabulous HR Teams, deserve to be recog-nized for their efforts in creating and driving great workplaces, and this is what the Stevie Awards for Great Employers hasbeen created to do. Congratulations to all the 2017 winners!

HR ACHIEVEMENT/HR INDIVIDUAL AWARDS JUDGING COMMITTEE
CHAIRAli AyazFounder & Senior ConsultantModern Management Consulting London, United Kingdom
Genuine Initiatives for Human ResourcesCompanies have been aware for a long time of the impact
that employee engagement has on customer experience, themarketplace, society, and revenues. While a lot of them triedto think outside the box, most couldn’t seem to get any fur-ther than expressing the importance of their employees ontheir career websites.
For many companies, people-related matters were simplyhanded over to their Human Resources Departments, whowere usually underfunded, but who did their best to try and fix things.
Over the past few decades, however, things have started to change as it becomes increasingly difficult to find and keeptalent - but the workload is still being heaped on those sameHuman Resources Departments.
I have been a Stevie Awards for Great Employers judge forthe past two years, as well as for other awards, and I have seenthat, in order to provide additional motivation for employeesto do their very best, companies have initiated many innovativeprograms in recent years. This year, I have seen an increasedinvolvement by top management in HR initiatives, whichdemonstrates the increasing strategic importance of theHuman Resources Department.
Among top executives, I observe a trend by managementto remain accessible to employees, to encourage direct communications, and to foster a sense of transparency andpeople-focused leadership, thus ensuring motivated andengaged employees.
Having judged more than 150 nominations in the 2017 Great Employers Awards, I can say that HR departmentsappear to be much more customer and business oriented, to have improved their marketing skills, and to have becomemore creative in order to attract, recruit, manage, and retain talent.
Thanks to the Stevie Awards for Great Employer, companies now have a platform to benchmark their hard work globally and to inspire each other to do better.
