Contents and Progress Record
Throughout the 11+ Verbal Reasoning range, we have included these handy contents pages, specifically designed to easily track progression throughout the books. Once pupils feel confident with a skill, they can colour in or tick the boxes correlating to the area they have completed, and easily note scores and times for end-of-unit tests.
Clear chapter headings divide revision into manageable chunks.
Boxes to colour in when a topic has been completed. Allows teachers to easily track topics revised.
Easily record test scores and times.

Working through the books
Throughout the 11+ Verbal Reasoning range, we have included handy headers for pupils to easily follow during independent revision. Across the Study and Revision Guide, Workbooks and Practice Papers, they include:
Chapters that link together types of questions testing similar skills
Chapter introductions to explain how the skills link in with work already covered in Maths and English
Thinking skills and games for pupils to practise with friends and family to build skills and to test everybody else’s at the same time!
Learning pages to introduce one type of question across two pages
End-of-chapter tests to give pupils a chance to try out skills learnt in a short test

Synonyms and antonymsSkill definition: to find two words closest in meaning (synonyms), or most opposite in
meaning (antonyms)
Find two words, one from each set, that are most similar in meaning.
(slip, jump, lead) (skip, slide, step) slip slide
Synonym and antonym questions ask you to find words with similar or opposite meaning. These questions come up very frequently in verbal reasoning tests and are asked in lots of different ways.
The example above shows one of the most common types of question and the ‘Try’ questions opposite show another type. You might also be asked to find missing letters in a clue word or even to choose words from a grid. But don’t be put off by the way the questions are asked – the problems are still the same!
Most questions should contain words that you are likely to know as you are being tested on your skills in comparing words, more than what difficult words mean.
The skill in answering these questions is to really concentrate on the kind of words you are looking at before you start. Is the word a noun, verb, adjective, adverb or some other class of word? You will find that the words you are looking for will always come from the same word class.
But think carefully before you choose your answer – sometimes words have more than one meaning! For example: ‘fly’, ‘shed’ and ‘flap’ are both nouns and verbs and so will have two different meanings (these words are called homonyms), e.g. as a verb, ‘fly’ means how a bird travels through the air; fly – noun is a type of insect. These words with double meanings are often clues to the answer.
Methodl Consider the kind of words that appear in the following question. Finding two words from the
same word class should reveal the answer.
(big, glide, cart) (rabbit, large, take)
adjective verb noun noun adjective verb
l The verbs ‘glide’ and ‘take’ do not mean the same, nor do the nouns ‘cart’ and ‘rabbit’, so the answer is straightforward: ‘big’ and ‘large’ are both adjectives with similar meanings.
l Now look at the example at the top of the page. Some words could be used either as nouns or verbs: for example:
slip – to slip (verb) a slip of paper (noun)
slide – to slide (verb) play on a slide (noun)
l But if you take ‘slip’ as a verb, it is similar in meaning to ‘slide’ as a verb. So this is the correct answer.
Some synonyms or antonyms may appear within the same brackets – these cannot be selected. Always choose one word from each bracket.

Synonyms and antonym
s
Some questions ask you to fi nd antonyms rather than synonyms. In these questions you are looking for words that are the most opposite in meaning. The answer to these questions will also come from the same word class. For example:
(dreaming, ride, asleep ) (drive, bed, waking )
verb verb adverb/adjective verb/noun noun adjective
l ‘asleep’ and ‘waking’ are opposite in meaning and are both adjectives, so this is the correct answer.
Sometimes more than two words may seem quite similar, for example: mend, repair, improve. You will need to think carefully about these words. Although they are all verbs, and they all mean making something better, only ‘mend’ and ‘repair’ involve something that is damaged.

The Learning Ladders
These Learning Ladders appear throughout the 11+ Verbal Reasoning range, to show pupils how skills in Verbal Reasoning link to the familiar areas of English and Maths they have already learnt in school. Their ability to problem-solve will develop as they step up the ladder, bringing together all of their knowledge to solve the most challenging questions by the time they reach the top.
