Objective 1: Describe how WW1 became a total war and how these

Collapsed
• war drains resources (men, wealth, etc. )
• Governments shifted to total war footing
• Leads to warfare through economics and propaganda in attempt to get whole of society involved
• Increased involvement of women in the war effort
Great War Sacrifices
• Government responsibilities increase in desperate times:– “Total War” for European
governments.
• channels entire nation’s resources to war effort
– Economy revolved around war needs (including women). Led to rationing.
– Government control of press=Propaganda.
• Propaganda – spreading of ideas to promote a cause or to damage an opposing cause• Often asked for
monetary support of war• Allies used German
conduct in Belgium to increase support – sometimes exaggerated
War Production
• Need large amounts of men to fight – leads to conscription (the draft) Problems?
• Germany had forced civilian labor to solve manpower shortages
• Governments raised taxes, borrowed money, set prices and made strikes forbidden.
Economic Warfare• British navy blockaded
the North Sea – why?– Would confiscate
contraband (materials of military nature)
• Allowed by international law
• Germany formed U-Boats to try and break blockade – declared unrestricted sub warfare
