Welcome to the OSAA / U.S. Bank / Les Schwab Tires State Championships! At the OSAA we believe high school activities provide opportunities for young people to receive a well‐rounded education that challenges both mind and body. These opportunities enrich and expand our students’ school experience and help them become contributing members of society. Participation in activities teaches students how to be part of something bigger than themselves; the meaning of respect for themselves and others; and skills like grit, resilience, patience and the ability to collaborate with peers. They also learn how to fail and, more importantly, how to turn adversity into success through effort. Congratulations to students, coaches, schools and communities who earned the right to participate in this state championship! And a special thanks to U.S. Bank and Les Schwab Tires for sharing our belief in the value of high school activities through their continued financial commitment. Together, we remain steadfast in our efforts to provide opportunities for students to experience these valuable lessons. Thank you for your continued support of Oregon high school activities! Peter Weber Executive Director, OSAA
On behalf of U.S. Bank, welcome to today's Oregon School Activities Association state championship! We believe in building strong communities where we live and work. One way we demonstrate this commitment in Oregon is by supporting OSAA programs, which promote leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship in young people. Since 1984, U.S. Bank has been proud to support the OSAA and its 290 member schools, with more than four million dollars in contributions to date. We extend our congratulations to all of the participants, coaches, families and fans here today. We look forward to our continued partnership with you in support of Oregon's young people Stacey Dodson President, U.S. Bank Portland and Southwest Washington
Welcome! Teamwork. Responsibility. Accomplishment. Whether students are shooting for the hoop, marching in time or aiming for the end zone, they are practicing skills that will serve them well in school, on the job and in life. At Les Schwab Tire Centers, we are proud of the players and performers of the OSAA. We are also excited to celebrate our 16th year of being a title sponsor. We believe in supporting students as they learn about commitment, hard work and serving the community — values the company believes in. Today, throughout the state there are 295 high schools serving over 160,000 students. These schools help provide valuable education for our youth both in and outside the classroom to help make Oregon a better place to live. Thank you for being here and for supporting our great young people. Les Schwab, Doing the right thing matters.
WE BELIEVEIN CHANGING MORE
THAN JUST TIRES. Our values aren’t just something we talk about, they’re something we act on. We are proud to be
a title sponsor of the OSAA Wrestling State Championship! It’s a great way for them to grow and learn the same sense of hard work and integrity
that makes our state, and Les Schwab, strong.

About the OSAA
The OSAA is comprised of 290 member high schools representing more than 200 Oregon communities. A private non‐profit, board‐governed association, the OSAA is sanctioned by the Oregon State Board of Education and is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). It’s History The OSAA began in 1918 when administrators from 36 schools recognized a need for an organization to coordinate and regulate high school interscholastic competition. Thus the Oregon State High School Athletic Association was formed. The name was changed in 1947 to reflect the inclusion of activities outside of traditional athletics. Mission Statement The mission of the OSAA is to serve member schools by providing leadership and state coordination for the conduct of interscholastic activities, which will enrich the educational experiences of high school students. The OSAA will work to promote interschool activities that provide equitable participation opportunities, positive recognition and learning experiences to students, while enhancing the achievement of educational goals. What the OSAA Does Much like the NCAA at the collegiate level, the OSAA regulates the eligibility and competition of all high school students in the state. This includes everything from determining which league a school will compete in to sponsoring and administering state championships. Funding As a private, non‐profit organization, the OSAA does not receive any state funding. Revenue is generated from three sources: school membership fees, state championship gate receipts and corporate sponsors. OSAA Activities The OSAA sponsors 116 state championships for students competing in 19 interscholastic activities: Fall Cross Country, Volleyball, Soccer, Football Winter Cheerleading, Wrestling, Swimming, Basketball, Dance/Drill Spring Speech, Solo Music, Choir, Band/Orchestra Golf, Tennis, Track & Field, Softball, Baseball

High School: Reedsport 1969 Football Wrestling Track and Field College: University of Oregon 1973 BS Physical Education and Health Education Football Professional: Upon Graduation from U of O I coached football at the U of O, Sheldon and Willamette High Schools. Then I began teaching and coaching Football Wrestling and Track and Field in Cottage Grove for 40 Years. Coaching: Head Wrestling coach at Cottage Grove High School from 1977 to 2015. Head Football Coach at CGHS 1979‐81 One of the most rewarding award was the 2008 Oregon State 4A Coach of the Year. For me, this award represented what was accomplished by our program and not just m as an individuale. I was very proud of this acknowledgement for Cottage Grove. Greatest impact: Coaches such as Ron Finley, Len Casanova, Jerry Frei, and Rudy Rupee are why I am who I am. They helped me realize
how important of a role I could play in the lives of others because they did it for me. My Parents, Betty and Butch Thompson made me the person I am. Sports impact: Athletics have been the vehicle to surround myself with so many wonderful people; young and old. Sport is my life. It defines who I am. My connection with people has been profoundly altered because of our relationship of the brother/sisterhood of sports.
Stephanie Matthews Residence: Gresham, Ore. Hometown: Aloha, Ore. High School: Aloha 1986 Professional: Athletic secretary for David Douglas High School Previously I worked for Centennial School district for 12 years. Certified weight assessor for the OSAA President of Centennial Mat Club. I have also a passion for photography and have been taking sports photos for all of these years and sharing them freely with the athletes and their families. I am also the official photographer for the Oregon Wrestling Classic as well as the Oregon Hall of Fame banquet. I am currently on the board for the Oregon Wrestling Classic, the Mt Hood Conference District tournament as well as this State Tournament. In 2015 I was named "Person of the Year" at the Oregon Wrestling Classic. Coaching: I started as a wrestling mom and coaches wife at Centennial Middle School in 2003. Once my son and husband moved up to the high school I took over the stat crew team and I have been training stat crew girls
for 14 years, recruiting from 6th grade up and have maintained a team of 15‐18 girls that travel to tournaments with the team. These girls will run most or all of the tables and in some cases running the entire tournament. Often I train stat crew from other schools as well. I championed for these high school students to be the table help at the district and state tournaments during the time that only adults were aloud to do this. It made more sense to let the kids who were doing it all year long very well to get the opportunity to do it during these important tournaments. I train not only the old fashioned paper and team scoring but train for trackwrestling scoring and set up many tournaments for the table/clock/scoring with trackwrestling. Greatest impact: I can with the utmost sincerity say that the person who has had the greatest impact on my life is my husband Roger Matthews. I did not know anything about wrestling before we met 30 years ago and when he became a coach both of our lives completely changed direction. Watching him coach I have learned so much and take so much of what he teaches into my own set of life skills. I watched him grow and change into the man he is today through wrestling and coaching. I love, adore and respect him more than I can put into words. I have grown to love the sport and what value it gives to our lives in so many ways so much so that it has become a passion of mine and a mission to keep this sport strong and alive. Sports impact: Growing up with a single mother who had to work very hard to raise two kids on her own I did not have the opportunities to get involved with athletics. While I have no regrets for this I do think I missed out on some good things, however feel like I am getting back what I may have missed then 10 fold now. Wrestling has changed my life in an indescribable way and though I have not ever been on the mat as a competitor, I feel like the greatest lessons I have learned have come from this sport. Now it is my hope to be able to give back to the sport what it has given me and hope to share this with the young student athletes that I work with.

Tony Jones Residence: Coquille, Ore. Hometown: Springfield, Ore. High School: Springfield 1978 Football and Westling College: Last graduating class from Oregon College of Education ‐ 1982 Bachelor of Science: Physical Education and Health Lewis and Clark College ‐ 2001 Master of Education Professional: I have enjoyed a thirty, plus year career in education. During my career I spent a significant amount of time volunteering with the Oregon Wrestling Association and USA Wrestling. Some of the highlights of my experiences were: National Coach of the Year (USA Wrestling 1992), coordinating many state‐wide and regional tournaments, serving as an international wrestling official, developing the OWA Cadet Division, coaching at the Olympic Sports Festival (1995), serving as the OWA State Chairman and leading wresting teams on international tours and tournaments to Japan, China, New Zealand, Bulgaria, India and Russia. Coaching: I served as the head wrestling coach at Southwestern Oregon CC (1997‐2001) and Springfield High School (1984‐87). Additional schools that I coached wrestling at were: Marshfield, Thurston and Central High Schools. During my coaching days at Marshfield, I also acted as the head coach of Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Boys Tennis at various times. Greatest impact: The greatest influence in my life was my father. Even though he was only with me for my first fifteen years, he taught me many values that define who I am now. The ideals of honesty, integrity, sincerity and the benefits of hard work were
benefits that I was exposed to as a youth. His love for his family as well as others was unconditional; a gift that has left an indelible impression on me as a person, educator, husband and father. He was the most generous soul I have ever known and I am blessed to have had him as a dad. Sports impact: I get an abundant amount of satisfaction in seeing a great number of athletes that I had a hand in coaching, participating in some role in athletics themselves. It is a true pleasure to go to a sporting event in Oregon and observe a former athlete leading a team, officiating or being a supportive parent. The fellowship that I continue to experience through personal connections in sports is truly a blessing.
2018 Button The 2018 tournament button features an important part of wrestling: “The Takedown”. 75% of matches are won by the wrestler securing the first takedown. The takedown opens the opportunity to gain a fall or near fall points. This year’s button features Larry Owings of Canby HS representing the University of Washington. His “modified fireman’s carry” scored a 2‐point takedown and a 2‐point nearfall against unbeaten Dan Gable of Iowa in the 1970 NCAA Wrestling Championship finals. Owings 13‐11 victory is even today considered one of the greatest upsets in collegiate wrestling. Many Iowa fans still can’t believe it happened.

Whether students are shooting for the hoop, singing in choir, marching in time or aiming for the end zone, they are practicing skills that will serve them well in school, on the job and in life.
Les Schwab is proud of the players and performers of the OSAA. We believe in supporting students as they learn about commitment, hard work and serving the community — values the company believes in. We’re glad to be a title sponsor of the

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS SCORING PROCEDURES
Tournament scoring has three components: advancement points, bonus points and placement points. One or more of these may make up the points earned by each wrestler in any given round of the tournament.
Advancement Points:
Are awarded for each match won in either the championship or consolation bracket where the wrestler advances to a subsequent match in the tournament.
A wrestler who receives a bye in a round where at least one match is wrestled receives additional advancement points by winning the next match.
o For example, in the 3A classification there are four wrestlers in each weight class who may earn additional advancement points after receiving a bye in Championship Round 1.
o However, in the 3A classification, no wrestlers receive advancement points in the consolation bracket after receiving byes in Consolation Round 1, as there are NO matches wrestled in Consolation Round 1.
Wins in the championship bracket where the wrestler advances to a subsequent round earn two advancement points.
Wins in the consolation bracket where the wrestler advances to a subsequent round earn one advancement point.
Bonus Points:
Are awarded for a major decision, technical fall, fall, injury default, disqualification or forfeit.
Major decision: 1 bonus point
Technical Fall: 1.5 bonus points
Fall, injury default, disqualification or forfeit: 2 bonus points
Placement Points:
Individual placement points are awarded as earned. The placement points are different between some classifications in this tournament due to the different number of places being awarded.

This message presented by the Oregon School Activities Association and the Oregon Athletic Directors Association.
Wearing the uniform of your high school comes with a big responsibility. Your community cheers for you. Your teammates count on you. And you have the opportunity to make history by competing for a state championship. Do you have what it takes?
In high school sports, you can be a part of something bigger than yourself.
You can be part of a team.

High school activities allow you to connect to yourself, your communityand your future. Find your place.Find yourself. Find your reason why.
What’s Your Reason?
They are like my second family.
After practices, we all go out to eat together. On weekends, we meet up to ride bikes or swim.
And when we play, it’s not for the people up in the stands. It’s not for the victory. It’s just for us.
