Asynkronmotor, er en kortslutningsmotor som drives av et roterende elektrisk felt, men hvor rotor ved belastning får en langsommere hastighet enn det roterende feltet (sakking). Statoren er lik den i synkronmotoren og mates vanligvis med 3-fase spenning.

Rotoren i den vanligste utførelsen, kortslutningstypen, har ingen elektriske kontakter og er derfor både driftssikker og billig å produsere; rotorviklingen er erstattet av staver av kobber og aluminium som er kortsluttet i begge ender.

Jo mindre belastningen på motoren er, jo mer vil turtallet på rotoren nærme seg statorfeltets hastighet. Men samtidig faller dreiemomentet raskt mot null, slik at den aldri oppnår synkront turtall.

Asynkronmotorer av kortslutningstypen får fullt tilslag straks den koples til nettet, noe som medfører svært høy startstrøm. Denne kan reduseres ved bruk av Y/D-vender (stjerne/trekant-vender).

Asynkronmotoren kan også være utført med sleperinger og justerbare motstander i rotorkretsen, noe som gjør det mulig å oppnå myk start og variabel hastighet. For turtallsregulering kan asynkronmotorer også leveres i utførelse med valgbart poltall, såkalt dahlanderkopling. En annen mulighet for turtallsregulering er å benytte moderne tyristorbasert frekvensomformer

Ved å bytte om to faser på koplingsbrettet får motoren motsatt rotasjonsretning. Mindre asynkronmotorer kan også drives med vanlig 230 V énfaset vekselstrøm. Den nødvendige faseforskyvningen for det roterende feltet ordnes da med en kondensator.Den enkle kortslutningstypen er overlegent den mest brukte elektriske motoren i dag.

Når magneten beveger seg nedover i kobberrøret, induseres strøm i kobberrøret. Denne strømmen setter opp et motsatt magnetfelt som prøver å motvirke bevegelsen til magneten.

Lenz' lov – WikipediaLenz' lov sier at en indusert strøm har en slik retning at de kreftene som oppstår vil motvirke inngrepet som induserer strømmen. Lenz' lov er helt sentral innenfor elektromagnetisk induksjon, og gir opphavet til minusfortegnet i Faradays lov. Lenz' lov ble formulert av fysikeren Emil Lenz i 1834.
