VOLUNTEERS
Alaskan Shipping Companies Help Make Recycling WorkBy Scott Smith, ALPAR President
Every spring and summer brings cleanup and recycling into focus. We see volunteers with
yellow litterbags along the highway, Youth Litter Patrollers cleaning roads, beaches and trails, and Alaska’s recycling centers turning waste into resources.
Behind the scenes, ALPAR’s shipping partners, Matson, TOTE Maritime and Alaska Marine Lines, support all these efforts through their donations of shipping services to move recyclables to Seattle. The value to our recycling system is over $2.5 million every year.
In addition, Lynden Transport, Alaska West Express, Weaver Brothers, United Freight and the
Alaska Railroad donate trucking and rail services to move recyclables. Without the on-going support of all these shipping companies, freight costs would be a barrier to recycling in Alaska.
For 32 years, ALPAR has been the conduit for making this unique partnership work for Alaska’s communities. Everyone benefits by making recycling economically viable and providing the support needed for ALPAR’s recycling and litter programs statewide.
The freight assistance program not only supports community recycling centers but other recycling and litter prevention efforts across the state. Alaskans have always solved challenges by being innovative. The ALPAR freight assistance program is an outstanding example of how businesses have
stepped up to make efforts such as recycling and litter clean up work efficiently and economically.
Members of ALPAR and the communities it serves appreciate the contributions of the shippers, trucking firms and the Railroad that are so important to making Alaska a state that values recycling and is always working to keep Alaska litter free.
ALPAR’s business contributors support a variety of programs including BP’s sponsorship of the statewide free litterbag distribution and Northern Air Cargo and other rural air carriers for the Flying Cans and Flying Bottles program in rural Alaska. ALPAR partnerships are making a difference for Alaska.See Page 6 for ALPAR supporters and sponsors.

“In Anchorage, only #1 plastic bottles and #2 plastic bottles/jugs are accepted – all must have a neck and screw top. Tubs, buckets and clear clamshell type containers contain different chemicals which
melt at different temperatures even though they may contain #1 or #2 resins. “Non-bottles” are much lower in value which makes them much less economical to recycle so we only take bottles and jugs in order to make our plastic recycling more sustainable. Plastic bags and film are also taken at the
Anchorage Recycling Center Drop-Off and bags are taken at most major retailers for recycling.”
