Michael Grant embarksonhisthirdseasonasthesixthCoppinStateUniversityheadmen’sbasketballcoachsince1964.

In2015-16,theEaglesadvancedtothequarterfinalsofthe2016MEACBasketballTournamentforthesecondstraightseasonafterupsettingNCA&Tindoubleovertimeintheopeninground.TheEaglesfinishedsecondintheMEACin3-pointersmade,including

makinga3-pointfieldgoalin190consecutivegame,thelongeststreakintheNCAA.

Granthaswoneverywherehe’sbeenduringhiscareerhelpingschoolswinconferencechampionshipsandqualifyfortheNCAAandNAIAnationaltournaments.Afifteen-yearveteran,whohaswon56percentofhisgames,GrantcomestoCoppinStatefromDivisionIIStillmanCollege,wherehewastheheadcoachforthelastsixyears.Grantwasalsotheheadcoachfrom2003-05atSouthernUniversity(La.)wherehereplacedthelegendaryBenJobeandfrom1996-2003atCentralStateUniversity.Duringhiscareer,Grant’steamshavepostedwinningrecords12timesandwonatleast20gamesinaseasonfourtimes.InadditiontohisdutiesasheadbasketballcoachatStillman,Grantalsoservedthecollegeastheassistantdirectorofathletics.Moreimportantly,hehasgraduatedover80percentofhisstu-dent-athletesduringhiscareer.Creditedbyformerplayersasa“disciplinarian,”Grant’scoachinggeniuswasfirstestablishedatNAIA-turned-DivisionIImemberCentralState(Ohio)University.Insevenseasons,GrantledtheMarauderstofour20-wincampaignsandonlyonelosingsea-son—hisfirstin1996-97.Duringthe1999-2000season,GrantledCentralStatetothepro-gram’sfirstvictoryintheNAIANationalTournamentsince1979.Bytheendofhisseven-yeartenureattheschool,GranthadbecomeonlythefourthCentralStatecoachtohavewonmorethan100gamesinhiscareerwiththeschool.Grant’ssuccesscontinuedatStillman.Duringthe2010-11season,heguidedStillmantoa24-8overallmark,a19-5conferencerecord,secondplaceintheSIACandtotheregionalfinaloftheDivisionIISouthRegional.TheTigersfin-ishedtheseasoneighthintheNCAAwiththree-pointersmade(9.4pergame)andblockedshots(4.2perouting).

Attheconclusionofthe2013-14campaign,Grantamassedasix-yearschoolrecordof100-73.In2012-13,theTigersfinishedtheseasonwithan18-10overallmarkanda12-5SIACrecord.TheTigersledtheSIACinassists,blockedshots,scoringoffenseandthree-pointersmadepergame.

Grantbeganhiscoachingcareerathisalmamater,MaloneCollegeinOhio,wherehefirststudiedunderHalSmithasastudentassistant.GrantthenservedonSmith’sstaffin1985asafull-timeassistantbeforeheadingtotheUniversityofMichiganasagraduateassistantwherehehelpedcoachanddevelophisyoungerbrotherGaryGrant,whoeventuallybecametheBigTenPlayeroftheYearin1988.GaryGrantwasthe14thoverallplayerchoseninthe1988NBAdraft.AnativeofCleveland,Ohio,GrantalsocoachedatKentuckyStateUniversity,AlleghanyCollege,ClevelandStateUniversity,andtheUniversityofToledo.HeisamemberoftheNationalAssociationofBasketballCoaches(NABC)congress.Alsoduringhiscareer,GrantwastheSIACBasketballChair,amemberoftheNCAADivisionIIRegionalAdvisoryCommitteeandaNAIANationalChampionshipTournamentCommitteeMember.Grantandhiswife,Charmane,resideinHanover,Md.Theyhavethreechildren:Chris,RayneshaandLauren.

Season OutlookCoppinStateiseyeingareturntocontenderstatusintheMid-EasternAthleticConferencemen’sbasketballrace.Lastyear’sEaglesfinishedwitha6-10MEACconferencerecordand9-22overallrecord.Sevendefeatscameinovertimebylessthanafivepointmargin.Third-yearheadcoachMichaelGrantandhisEaglesarebattledtestedandwilllooktoenduponthewinningsideofthoseclosegamesthistimearound.

“Wewanttobeinpositiontowinasmanygamesaspossible.Itistimeforustoprovethatweareoneofthetopteamsinthisleague,sowemustgooutandproveit.Wehavetogoout,beconsistentandplayashardaswecanplay.Losingsomanyclosegameslastyearweshouldbeabletopullsomeofthoseoutthistimearound,”Grantsaid.

CoppinStateadvancetothequarterfinalsofthe2016MEACBasketballTournamentforthesecondstraightseasonafterupsettingNorthCarolinaA&Tindoubleovertimeintheopeninground.TheEaglesfinishedsecondintheMEACinthree-pointersmade,includingmakinga3-pointfieldgoalin190consecutivegame,thelongeststreakintheNCAA.

“Withtheseniorswehavecomingback,wehaveanadvantageoveralotofteamswithleadershipandexperience,”Grantcon-tinued.

TheEaglesreturnsevenletterwinnersfromlastseasonincludingthreestarters.ThereturnersarehighlightedbyseniorsTerryHarris,Jr.(6-8,205,Baltimore,MD)andJoshuaTreadwell(6-5,213,Newark,NJ).Harris,Jr.ledtheEagleswith7.2rebounds,eightdouble-doubleperformancesandwassecondontheteamscoring12.4pointspercontest.Treadwellaveraged10.5points,4.6reboundsandledtheEaglesfromthefieldat44%.

GrantaddssixnewcomerstomeshwithhisreturnersforarunattheMid-EasternAthleticConferenceTournamentChampionship.

TheEaglesbackcourtwillfeatureawell-seasonedtransferattheleadguardtogoalongwithapairoffirstyearplayers.SeniorJoeyGripper(6-1,175,Philadelphia,PA)bringsleadershipanddisciplineatthepointguardposition.JoiningGripperisred-shirtfreshmanRasoolHinson(6-3,180,Camden,NJ)andfreshmanDejuanClayton(6-2,175,Bowie,MD).Hinsonisatoughdefend-erandplaysveryhardandClaytonisahighcaliberfreshmanthatwillbeagreatadditiontotheEaglesbackcourt.

NewcomerjuniorTre’Thomas(6-3,180,Bowie,MD)andreturningsophomoreLucianBrownlee(6-2,165,Lawnside,NJ)willplayattheoffguardposition.ThomasisastrongshooterthatGrantwillneedtoknockdownopenshotsintheiroffense.Brownleeconvertsfrompointguardtoshootingguardafterplayingin31gamesaveraging4.2pointsaseasonago.Coppin

Statemade238three-pointerslastseasonandhadtheconfer-enceleaderinboththree-pointfieldgoalpercentageaswellasthree-pointersmade.

Grant’sforwardsareinterchangeableandcanreallyplaytheoff-guardorshiftdowntodefendabiggerforward.SeniorJoshuaTreadwellendedlastseasononahighnotescoringindoublefig-uresinthefinaleightMEACgames.Hescoredindoublefigures14timesandreached20+pointsinapairofgames.SeniorKeithShivers(6-4,195,UpperMarlboro,MD)startedinall27gamesplayedlastseasonaveraging9.1pointsandrank-ingsecondontheteaminstealspergame(1.1).ShiversbringstoughnesstotheEaglesandreacheddoublefigurescoringin12games.

SeniorTerryHarris,Jr.gotofftoagreatstartrackingupfivedou-bledoublesinfiveoftheEaglesfirstsixcontests.Harrisstartedin28of30gamesplayedandfinishedfifthinrebounding(7.2),sixthindefensiverebounding(5.0),11thinoffensiverebounding(2.2)and13thinblockedshots(0.8)amongsttheMEAClastyear.OneofGrant’stop-shootersisreturningseniorMufaroMurinda(6-7,195,Pomona,CA).Murindaplayedin19contestsandhadhisbreakoutgameonnationaltelevisionatNorfolkStatehitting4-of-7three-pointersfinishingwith17points.

Grant’spostplayerswillhavetobephysicalandabletoscorearoundthebasketforhissquadtobesuccessful.Newcomerse-niortransferChasBrown(6-8,240,Baltimore,MD)willserveastheEagles’bruiserdownlow.GranthopesthathecanbecomeoneofthetopbigmenintheMEACwithhissizeandathleticism.JuniorBlakeSimpson(6-7,230,Cincinnati,OH)startedin25gamesayearagoaveraging4.1rebounds.SimpsonisthelongesttenuredEagleontherosterhavingplayedatCoppinStateasatruefreshmanthreeseasonsago.SeniorIzaisHicks(6-8,200,StatenIsland,NY)addsdepthtothefrontcourtandisasolidroleplayerthatseenactionin18gameslastyear.
