WelcomeThe City of Sturgis is defined by its duality. It sits on the borderlands between the Black Hills and the prairie – serving as both a mountain town and a ranch community.
By all accounts, our town is a rural one with just 6,700 residents, and yet, our resources and infrastructure stretch each year to accommodate the 400,000 to 600,000 guests who attend our an-nual motorcycle rally. This dichotomy is replicated in our diverse population of creative intellectuals and pragmatic entrepreneurs. We find harmony in the differences, not separation.
Great schools. Safe neighborhoods. Growing economy. World-class public recreational space. Stunning landscapes.
This town is special. And we’re mak-ing concerted efforts to make sure we remain an ideal place to visit, work, play, and live.

Fort Meade & Its MuseumBy Bob Lee
Fort Meade was established during the winter of 1878-79 by units of the 1st and 11th Infantry and the reorganized 7th Cavalry. The mission of the 10 company post was to provide military protection for the gold seekers and settlers. General Phil Sheridan, famed Civil War Calvary, reportedly selected the picturesque site for the new post. The site is located about two miles northwest of nearby Bear Butte.
The history is deep here. It was on the parade grounds that the “Star Spangled Banner” was first played in an official ca-pacity for evening retreat. Long before it became the National Anthem, those present at its playing snapped to attention.
It was at Fort Meade that the Cavalry horse, Comanche, the only military survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn – was officially retired with military honors. It was also at Fort Meade that the controversial Major Marcus A. Reno was ca-shiered from service by court martial for scandalous behavior. Many celebrated frontier Army units saw service at Fort Me-ade, including the 4th Cavalry which was headquartered there for over 20 years. It outlived all other frontier posts of the Upper Missouri West surviving as a military installation until 1944 when it became a Veterans Administration Hospital. It still operates as such today, serving the mental and physical health of those who served America.
The campus also encompasses the scenic Fort Meade Recreation Area. Covering 6,693 acres, it is a mix of prairie and forest with miles of scenic trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horses. A scenic National Back-Country Byway runs through it. The area is also full of historic markers commemorating the area’s important historical significance including the Fort Meade Post Cemetery.
Many remnants of the historic peace-keeping old post have been faithfully preserved. Numerous mementos of the color-ful units and troopers who served here are on display at the Fort Meade Museum. The military buildings and residences have been retained under a Historical Preservation Designa-tion and are maintained by the Veterans Administration that now occupies the post.
The museum is a non-profit association dedicated to preserv-ing the history of the Fort Meade military post and units that served there from 1877 to 1944.
The Fort Meade Museum is open daily from mid-May through September with hours of operation from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information on the Fort Meade Museum and the history it helps to preserve visit fortmeademuseum.org.
Black Hills National Cemetery “The Arlington of the West”The Black Hills National Cemetery encompasses 102 acres just south of Sturgis. One of just 146 cemeteries in the nation designated as a “United States National Cemetery,” it serves as the final resting place for military personnel, veterans and their spouses.
The concept of a national cemetery dates back to July 17, 1862 when Congress enacted legislation that would authorize President Abraham Lincoln to purchase cemetery grounds that would be used as national cemeteries for soldiers who died while in service to the country. In 1873, all honorably dis-charged veterans became eligible for burial in these cemeteries.

In 1947, Congressman Francis Case endorsed the concept of a regional national cemetery. With the support of various South Dakota veterans’ organizations, a site just outside of Sturgis, on the Fort Meade Military Reservation, was selected. In 1948, Fort Meade National Cemetery was dedicated. Just one year later, its name was changed to Black Hills National Cemetery to avoid confusion with the existing active military installation in Maryland and in recognition of the area’s historical significance.
United States Senator Francis H. Case, the man who endorsed the idea then dedicated the cemetery, is among those resting here. He hoped it would become the “Arlington of the West,” and it has.
Since its dedication, the Black Hills National Cemetery has fulfilled its role as a place of rest and respect for America’s military. Since the first four burials during World War II in 1948, the remains of nearly 24,000 service members and their spouses have been entombed there.
Bear Butte State ParkFormed millions of years ago when molten lava pushed upward into the overlying sedimentary rock, this igneous rock formation is a sacred site to several tribes throughout North America and portions of Canada. It is known as “Mata Paha” or Bear Mountain to the Lakota People. The Cheyenne call it “Noahvose.”
Known for its holiness and mystery, Bear Butte has acted as a place of prayer and reflection for more than 4,000 years. Even today, traditional Native ceremonies are held here throughout the year.
If you choose to hike the site, please be respectful of its sig-nificance. You’ll see prayer clothes and ties. They vary by tribe and band, but all are sacred and should not be photographed or touched.
With its small herd of bison and scenic vistas, Bear Butte is an incredible place to experience nature and show respect for the Native tribes.
Vanocker Canyon & Boulder CanyonEarly in its history, Sturgis was dubbed the Key City for its proximity to the Hills. Today, it is conveniently located on Interstate 90 and offers immediate access to the Black Hills National Forest.
At the mouth of two scenic canyons, Sturgis is the gateway to several of the Black Hills’ most beautiful drives. Both Canyons offer scenic views, dense forest, rolling meadows, and towering canyon walls. The vegetation changes drastically through the seasons and every local can tell you if they prefer spring’s wild flowers or the golden oaks and aspen of autumn. Summer offers a variety of native grasses and brush while winter transforms it with frost and snow.
Beautiful Wonderland Cave snakes far below the Hills and can be reached from Vanocker Canyon.
Visit the Chamber & Visitors Center at 2040 Junction Avenue to plan your course. We’ll tailor a drive or hike for you.

Sturgis Motorcycle Museum By Christine Paige-Diers
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is one of the biggest mo-torcycle events in the United States, drawing hundreds of thousands of motorcycles and riders to this small town in the Black Hills each year. The history of this great rally and motorcycling is told every day on Main Street at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.
The Museum is home to a vast array of excellent examples of historic motorcycles dating back to 1909. From early board-track racers to more modern customs, there’s something here for everyone. American-made motorcycles share space with two-wheelers from all over the world. But the history shared at this museum goes far beyond the machines, this museum also houses considerable memorabilia and Sturgis-specific historical artifacts. From early records of meetings of the Jackpine Gypsies to racing history and memorabilia to a room dedicated to women in motorcycling, even the most ardent motorcycle expert will learn something new.
Listed by Patricia Schultz in her two travel guides - 1,000 Plac-es to See Before You Die and 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame plays host to visitors from all over the world each year. Helmet Hair Magazine named it among the “Top Ten Museums of Natural Motorcycle History.”
Two stories of exhibits chronicle not only the history of the machines, but also tell the story of the men and women who have shaped the sport and the lifestyle. Thanks to local and national collectors who loan their motorcycles and other memorabilia, the museum continues to grow and expand. Exhibits are rotated on a regular basis, offering repeat visitors something new each time they visit.
While the hours vary by season, the Sturgis Motorcycle Mu-seum & Hall of Fame is open year-round, seven days a week. Located on the corner of Main Street & Junction Avenue, the museum charges a modest admission. For more information, visit sturgismuseum.com or call 605-347-2001.
Main Street SturgisThis is a “bucket list” location for thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world. It’s where hundreds of thousands gather each August to celebrate motorcycles and biker culture.
The rest of the year, it’s a traditional Main Street serving the Sturgis community. However, if you’re here during the off-season, there are still a few stops to get that Rally experience. On the corner of Junction and Main, you’ll find the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. It’s full of Rally-relat-

ed history and memorabilia. The Loud American Roadhouse, Oasis Bar & Fireside Lounge, Easyrider’s Saloon, (Junction & Lazelle) and just off Main, The Knuckle and Sidehack Saloons are at the center of the action during the Rally and open year around. Ask around inside, the staff often has a good Rally story to share.
Sturgis Photo and Gifts at 1081 Main Street has great shopping, as well as, a huge Rally Group Photo hanging on the side of their building. Pose right and it looks as if you’re in the crowd. Check out our directory in the back of this publication for a
number of our Main Street member businesses who are open year around with Sturgis memorabilia or get a more perma-nent Sturgis souvenir at the Tattoo Cellar.
Finally, no visit to Main Street is complete without a visit to Tom’s T’s at 1117 Main Street. In 1986, Tom Monahan created and designed the well-known “Official Logo” which he donated to the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce to help promote the City of Sturgis. Tom passed away in 2011, but Tom’s T’s is still owned and operated by his family. There you can find official Sturgis Rally™ merchandise.
During the off season, Main Street serves as a traditional retail setting serving the Sturgis community.

Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™Our signature event, the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ is recognized around the world as the largest event of its kind. For one week each August, a half million motorcycle riders and enthusiasts descend on Sturgis and the Black Hills. Its trajectory to fame was an improbable one.
In 1936, Clarence “Pappy” Hoel pur-chased an Indian Motorcycle Franchise in Sturgis, SD. Soon after, the Jackpine Gyp-sies Motorcycle Club was formed. In 1938, the club held what would be known as the first Rally on August 14th with a race of 9 participants and a small audience.
In 1949, Main Street was blocked off for the first time in conjunction with a 2 hour awards ceremony. It grew slowly, albeit steadily from there. In 1961, the Gypsies introduced the Hill Climb and Motorcross races and in 1964 the move was made to close Main Street for a full three days for motorcycle parking. However, it wasn’t until 1974 that a vendor set up in the Sturgis Auditorium for the first time. By 1979, the now sev-en-day event issued its first temporary vendor licenses. There were nine.
Local businessman, Tom Monahan, donated the artwork for the Official Rally Logo to the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce in 1986. This was key in the branding of the event. Since then, the Rally has grown to encompass huge concerts, world-class entertainment, and hundreds of vendors.
In 2000, the event peaked at 600,000 in attendance. Since then, the crowds have plateaued at around 500,000. The 74th Annual Rally will take place August 4-10, 2014. SturgisMotorcycleRally.com
Sturgis Mustang RallyThe Sturgis Mustang Rally is in just its 8th year, but it’s already got a reputation as a great celebration of the famed Ford Mustang. The event includes autocross, drag racing, burnouts, barrel racing, and a dice roll poker run. Attendees can showcase their car at the Show and Shine or at the Launchbox Competition. The event also hosts Mustang auctions where you can buy or sell a car, parts, or Mustang memorabilia.
This year’s event will take place August 27-31, 2014. Visit SturgisMustangRally.com for details.

Ultra Endurance Racing
Black Hills 100 & Tatanka 100 Sturgis is world renowned for motorcycles. However, a group of locals is seeking to make Sturgis and the Black Hills a desti-nation for outdoor recreation.
Dakota Endurance, founded by local runners, introduced the Black Hills 100 in 2011. It is a trail running event including race distances of 100 miles, 100km and 50 miles. The Tatanka 100 mountain bike race, held on the same day and directed by local riders, made its debut in 2012. Together these events serve as a showcase for the amazing and largely unknown network of trails in the Black Hills.
In its fourth year, the Black Hills 100 takes runners along the beautiful, but rugged, Centennial and Deerfield trails. Word is spreading quickly in the ultra-running community. Participants have included runners from across the country and as far away as Italy & Japan. Learn more at BlackHills100.com.
Introduced in 2012, the Tatanka 100 is the first 100-mile bike race in South Dakota. The course makes a large loop through the Northern Black Hills offering a unique blend of rugged, technical riding along the Centennial and Deerfield trails followed by smoother, faster riding along the Mickelson trail and roads that close out the loop. The race has already been added to the exclusive National Ultra Endurance Series, a series of 15 races across 14 states that draws some of the top mountain bikers in the country. Find more informa-tion at Tatanka100.com.
BAM – Bikes, Art & Music Festival & RaceThe Sturgis BAM Festival is a grass-roots, local festival that has grown quickly. The central event is a 25-mile cross coun-try mountain bike race on the Centennial Trail from Piedmont to Sturgis attracting cyclists from all over the region and coun-try. The race ends at the Sturgis City Park at a bustling vendor fair and concert.
For details or to register for the July 12, 2014 event, visit SturgisBAM.com.

Hiking, Mountain-Biking & Trail RunningThe Black Hills National Forest and the area immediately surrounding Sturgis is riddled with scenic trails for a variety of skill levels. The terrains vary from heav-ily wooded forest to groves of oak and aspen. There are grassy meadows ideal for a family picnic and scenic outlooks perfect for pictures. Visit page 23 for a trail map and information on the trail system or page 15 to learn about the world-class racing taking place here.
Off-RoadingWith access points to many of the Black Hills National Forest motor-vehicle use trails just minutes from Sturgis, you can take your ATV or 4-wheeler exploring the Hills. Feeling especially adventurous? Try rock-crawling through some of the rocky, winch-mandated trails in the area.
The Black Hills National Forest regional offices have official forest service maps and motor vehicle use maps available. The maps provide information for all Black Hills National Forest area trails which can be used for various off-road vehicles. You can pick up the map while you’re purchasing your use permit which is required for all off-road vehicles.
GolfIf you’re a fan of golf, take time to play nine holes at the Boulder Canyon Coun-try Club. Open to the public, this course sits just a few miles west of downtown Sturgis. Situated at the edge of the Black Hills National Forest this course offers challenges and world-class views. Or vis-it Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club in Spearfish off I-90 at Exit 17 offering a 9-hole par 36 course with hidden canyons, elevated tees and broad sloping greens.
PhotographyThe area provides excellent oppor-tunities to photograph all types of wildlife including deer, turkey, buffalo, mountain sheep and elk. You may be lucky enough to spot a mountain lion enjoying a nap on some rocky cliff in the pines. Both Vanocker and Boulder Canyons offer majestic views of foliage and rock formations. Or visit the almost mystical Bear Butte rising from the prairie grasses east of Sturgis.
CampingCamping opportunities in the Sturgis area abound. From traditional (and minimalistic) camping in the forest to cozy cabins at the local campgrounds, we offer it all. Many areas of the Black Hills National Forest can be used for overnight camping (check with the For-est Service for specific areas.)
At Bear Butte Lake and Dalton Lake, visitors can camp for a minimal fee. Both have specified camp sites and limited facilities. Fort Meade Recreation area also offers campsites with easy access to trails and space for horses. There are also many State and National campgrounds available throughout the Black Hills. For those with a more plush idea of “roughing it,” Sturgis has many private campgrounds offering a variety of amenities. See the Accommodations list in the directory of this magazine to find one that’s right for you.
HuntingSouth Dakota and the Black Hills are filled with a variety of wildlife. To man-age and maintain healthy populations,
hunting has been a popular activity for both locals and visitors for generations. In the Black Hills and around Sturgis, there are designated seasons for deer, antelope, elk, turkey, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, mountain lion and various small game. If you’re interested, visit gfp.sd.gov for more information.
FishingFishing is a year-around sport in South Dakota and the Black Hills. Bear Butte Lake, Fort Meade Reservoir, Lions Club Pond and Dalton Lake are all located within just minutes of Sturgis. If you prefer fly fishing, there are beautiful streams not far from Sturgis that our elusive trout seem to thrive in.
Ice FishingMany people have never experienced fishing except during the summer. Ice fishing is a fantastic winter sport and an excellent family activity. Popular ice fishing locations near Sturgis include Pactola Reservoir, Dalton Lake, Orman Dam, and Bear Butte Lake. Always make sure the ice is thick enough before walking or driving on it: at least 6 inches for walking and 10 inches for driving. Areas that are dark are not thick enough.

Ice fishing has become very popular in western South Dakota in recent years. The amazing scenery, abundant wildlife and fantastic fishing have fisherman flocking to western South Dakota during the winter months.
SnowmobilingThe Black Hills Area is a snowmobiler’s dream destination. With over 350 miles of marked trails that open December 1 and are groomed from December 15 through March 31, you are bound to find sights you will not encounter anywhere else. These marked trails wind through pine forests and open meadows and climb up to 6,000 feet in elevation, providing spectacular summit lookouts.
This trail system has been ranked in the top 10 places to ride in the nation. With 1.3 million acres of national forest lands to explore, it is unlikely you will encounter much traffic. And unlike some other destinations, there is little worry of dangerous crevasses or avalanches.
There are several spots on the trail system to stop and enjoy nature or grab a bite to eat and relax.
Didn’t bring your sled? Snowmobile rentals are available in the Northern
Hills and average about $150 per day. Many retailers offer half-day, single-day, weekend, and full week packages.
Cross Country Skiing and SnowshoeingIf cross country skiing or snowshoe-ing is your passion, you’ll find no better place than within the Black Hills National Forest and on the many trails surrounding Sturgis. With an average snow accumulation in the Black Hills of around 150 inches annually, condi-tions are generally favorable between late November and early March. Dress in layers as you would for any winter outdoor activity.
Prime destinations include the Centen-nial Trail and the Fort Meade Recreation Area. Both offer incredible scenery and storied Western pasts. Additionally, there are nearly 60 miles of marked and mapped trails in the Black Hills Na-tional Forest. They are easy enough for beginners and beautiful enough for the more experienced to enjoy.
If you don’t have your own snowshoes, you can borrow them from the South Dakota State Parks. Visit their website at gfp.sd.gov/state-parks for details.
Skiing and TubingMystic Miner Ski Resort at Deer Mountain is located just 23 miles from Sturgis and offers both skiing and tubing. “Mystic” (summit elevation of 6,850 feet) features an 850 foot vertical drop, two Poma-lifts, a 3,000 foot triple chairlift, and West Ridge, a 400 acre addition to the ski area, which has its own 2,500 foot double chairlift. Over 90 percent of the trails are lighted and night skiing and tubing are occasion-ally available. Tubing is available for adults and children over the age of three. After a day on the slopes, be sure to visit the Lodge for a snack or beer before you go.
Terry Peak (summit elevation of 7,076 feet) features twenty miles of trails on its 1,052 foot vertical drop. Located in the Northern Black Hills, just 21 miles from Sturgis. The resort features seven black diamond runs and is open to Alpine skiers, telemark enthusiasts, and snow-boarders. The resort recently added a new high-speed quad chairlift to the existing 6 chairlifts serving the mountain. Terry Peak features amenities including a lodge, con-dos, and snowmaking capabilities. Over 60 percent of the trails can be covered with existing snowmaking equipment.
With over 350 miles of marked trails, the Black Hills Area is a snowmobiler’s dream destination.
With an average snow accumulation of around 150 inches annually, snowshoe-ing is a popular winter activity.
Cross country and down hilling skiing are both popular in the Black Hills during the winter months.

The most popular trail heads are located at the Sturgis Mu-nicipal Park on the east end of Lazelle Street, Centennial Park located behind McDonald’s on the west end of Lazelle Street, and the City Fairgrounds located on Ballpark Road. Dogs are allowed on the path but must be kept on a leash at all times.
u Fort Meade Recreation AreaThe Fort Meade Recreation Area is com-posed of approximately 6,700 acres of forest and grasslands. The area is man-aged to protect, preserve, and enhance its cultural, historic, recreational, and wild-
life values. Many trails offer both scenic views of Bear Butte and the prairie, as well as, the Black Hills to the south.
u Fort Meade National Back Country BywayThe 5-mile gravel road from Exit 34 off of I-90 to Fort Meade is designated as the National Back Country Byway. While on this road you will find many noteworthy sites such as: the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Chapel, Curley Grimes’ Grave, the Sidney to Deadwood Stagecoach and Wagon Freight Trail, and Calvary Jumps.
Also on the byway, the Fort Meade Post Cemetery is the only intact cavalry ceme-tery in the western United States. 119 of the 200 burials in this cemetery took place prior to 1900. The first burial was recorded in 1878 and the last in 1943.
The road is also home to the site of Camp Fechner which was the site of a Civilian Conservation Camp. Established in the 1930s, it was the district headquarters for the 16 CCC camps in the Black Hills. Additionally, it was used to house German prisoners-of-war in 1945. Today, only a few foundations remain to mark the site of the headquarters camp. The temporary wooden buildings were torn down when the program was abandoned.
The byway ends at Highway 34 and the entrance to Fort Meade.

Downtown Revitalization and the Sturgis 2nd Street PlazaIn recent years, the community of Sturgis has made a concerted effort to revitalize its downtown core. From the development of a Business Improve-ment District (BID) and the Downtown Sturgis Foundation, to several new ordinances passed by the City Council, coordinated efforts are targeting eco-nomic development and a year-around, thriving Main Street and downtown.
An important part of this effort is the planned 2nd Street Plaza on the corner of 2nd and Main Streets. The Plaza is a collaboration of members of the commu-nity and city. When completed, the lot and adjoining street will be a beautiful outdoor venue for both planned events, as well as, informal gatherings. Currently, the project is moving forward with the first phase of implementation and funding.
“The design pulls from the local archi-tecture, history and the unique culture of ‘riders’ that is singularly Sturgis,”
explains Eirik Heikes, Department Manager, Landscape Architecture & Planning at Four Front Design.
Efforts are targeting economic development and a year-around thriving Main Street and downtown.

Upon its completion, the Plaza will be an ideal space for live entertainment and vendors, as well as, a serene spot to read the paper or visit with a friend on a week-day afternoon.
For more information, to see larger versions of the architectural drawings, or to make a donation towards the cre-ation of the Plaza, visit the Sturgis Area Chamber at 2040 Junction Avenue.
The Rushmore RegionSturgis is a part of a comprehensive marketing and branding effort among Black Hills communities to promote the region as a great place to work, play, and live. In recent years, South Dakota has topped the list of business friendly states. That coupled with the natural beauty of the Hills and a high quality of life, makes the Rushmore Region an ideal location for new and expanding businesses, as well as, entrepreneurs.
AgricultureWhile it may not claim many headlines, agriculture is the year-around lifeblood of the Sturgis community and Meade County. With more than $119 million in cash receipts in 2011, ag affects every aspect of our economy. Traditional row crops are common here, though recent years have brought variety. Bear Butte Gardens east of Sturgis grows and sells certified organic fruits and vegetables, while grapes are being grown at the new Belle Joli Winery on the fringe of Sturgis and Vanocker Canyon. However, it is livestock that claims the majority of local ag land and the largest economic impact.
Last year, this industry was devastated by a freak early fall storm named Atlas. The first weekend of October, heavy wet snow followed heavy rain. In the end, the totals far exceeded any pre-dictions or estimates with nearly three feet of snow drifting under hurricane force winds. Thousands of trees still full of summer’s leaves snapped under the weight of snow and ice. Thousands were without power for days. Roadways were closed and emergancy calls were answered in tractors, trucks and snow-mobiles. The roof of Sturgis’ middle school collapsed with similar damage to many commercial properties.
The brunt of the storm, though, was taken by the livestock. Thousands of cattle still in their summer pastures drift-ed aimlessly looking for shelter. Sadly, tens of thousands died in fence lines and draws before the storm calmed.
Some ranchers lost most of their horses and entire herds of cattle. This is a loss almost impossible to convey to those outside the industry. Herds are the product of decades of breeding and genetic programs often spanning multi-ple generations of a ranch family. Such a loss is as personal as it is painful. In Atlas’ wake an outpouring of support came from the Sturgis community and across the nation. Cattle and horses were donated from ag neighbors in surrounding states. Financial donations were made by corporations and private entities. This generosity has made a future in ranching seem possible for many of those most impacted. We are so grateful.
If you’d like to contribute to our ag families as they rebuild their herds, contact the Ranch-er Relief Fund, PO Box 231, Rapid City, SD 57709; call 605-945-2333; or visit their website at RanchersRelief.org.
The Trademark and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc.Each year, half-a-million motorcycle enthusiasts attend the Sturgis Mo-torcycle Rally™ held in August. A world-recognized brand has grown-up around the event. Due to this brand recognition, Sturgis is attempting to rejuvenate and give back to the community via royalties on the St-urgis trademark in relation to Rally goods and services.
This is a chance for the small town of 6,700 to benefit from a popular event in order to improve the community for the locals and for its visitors.
The licensing program was greatly en-hanced when a local, well-respected busi-nessman, the late Tom Monahan, created and designed the well-known “Official Logo” in 1986, which he donated to the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce to help promote the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ and support community projects. Through the generosity of the royal-ties, local school programs, elderly meal programs, arts and culture programs and other non-profit charities have received much needed funding that is hard to obtain in small rural communities.

In 2010, the Chamber of Commerce made a community driven decision to remove themselves from the trademarks in order to devote their attention to local commerce and businesses as most Chambers operate and function. The non-profit Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ Inc. (SMRi) was formed and received assignment of the rights to the Sturgis® related trademark and related registra-tions including the Monahan “Official Logo.” This organization is a volunteer board comprised of local business peo-ple, motorcycle industry partners and tourism industry representatives. Their vision is to hold the Sturgis® marks for the residents of Sturgis in order to retain the benefit where it belongs.
Unfortunately, the marks have the risk of landing in the hands of outside en-trepreneurs who realize the value of the
Sturgis name and the Sturgis® Motorcy-cle Rally™.
This is not a program to take advantage of anyone. It is simply a vehicle for motorcy-cle enthusiasts to give back to a town that has created so many great memories.
For more information on the Sturgis® trademarks, contact Sturgis® Motorcy-cle Rally™ Inc. (SMRi) at 605-347-5336.

Sturgis Economic Development Corp. The Sturgis Economic Development Corp. (SEDC) is the area’s business relocation expert. As the private, nonprof-it economic development organization serving the city of Sturgis, Meade County, and the State of South Dakota, SEDC is the regional “go to” source for assistance with business relocation, expansion, or start-up needs.
The 45-acre Sturgis Industrial Park, which is located off Interstate 90’s Exit 30, offers certified site-ready parcels for industrial and commercial development. The Sturgis Industrial Park has UPS distribution facility onsite, and is home to South Dakota’s largest firearms manufacturing cluster.
In addition to the prosperous firearms industry, metals-related custom manufacturing thrives in Sturgis. Internet marketing com-panies benefit from efficient regional and global distribution. As the Meade County seat, Sturgis enjoys a healthy retail business mix. Prospective employers are drawn to the region’s low unemploy-ment, stable workforce, and technical training opportunities in this “right-to-work” state.
The SEDC’s revolving loan fund and partnerships with local lend-ers and state agencies combine to design competitive financing and incentive packages which assist businesses with expansion and start-up needs. Creative options for sale, lease and build-to-suit that are tailored to meet each business’s needs and are negotiable based on job creation and economic impact.
