With a soft opening last weekend at the Florida State Relays, almost the entirety of the healthy and available student athletes (70 athletes, 123 total entries) will take to the track for the only home meet of the year on the UMBC campus. With a condensed schedule and a quaint number of teams, this is a great opportunity to come out to see almost every event on the docket in a short amount of time. Leading the way for the sprint crew will be Mercedes Jackson and Denny Long who will both be competing in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. Both athletes won these respective events at the Outdoor edition of the America East Championships in 2013. Returning Conference Champion Trae Proctor will pull double duty in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles as will All Conference performer Paulette Fogle. The big events in the distance events will be the 5,000 meters, with both the men’s and women’s races jammed packed with athletes who represented the Retrievers at the America East Championships. On the women’s side, Nicole Dawson and Kirsten McGovern will look to work together to move up onto the 5k All Time list as a tune up before the 10,000 meters next weekend, while Eric Schuler will be looking to break the fifteen minute barrier. Last year’s Outdoor Conference champion in the 800 meters, Andrew Keresztes will lead a deep group while 1,000 meter record holder Sarah Daly will run the 1,500 meters for the first time. The throws will be busy with the return of Yao Adantor fresh off a near personal best effort at the FSU Relays and Vincent Rentszch vying for the stadium record after going a shade over 216 feet last weekend with an abbreviated approach. The javelin was an exciting event for the women as well with Alisha Beeman setting the school mark in Florida and will try to reprise her effort this weekend. She may get the biggest challenge from teammate Abigail Slonski, who brings a high school mark within feet of Beeman’s. Shioma Obemeata will look to repeat his Conference Championship in the triple jump from last indoor season and perhaps be the second Retriever to go over the fifty foot barrier. Breakout indoor performers Dosu Teyibo and Justin Glaze will be vying to continue that success outdoors in the long and triple jumps. For the women school record holder Alisha Beeman will be performing in the high jump while Caitlyn Davis will look to move up the record boards in the pole vault.
