RISD
Low-Budget, Modular Graphic
System
This, is a superlike!
We had just founded the AIGA RISD student group
to organize projects, workshops, and events at the
Rhode Island School of Design, and we needed a
distinctive yet flexible system for printed matter.
As graduate students, our time and budget were
limited, so everything had to be quick to lay out
and inexpensive to print.
Our solution was a modular system of letter-size
sheets printed on a black-and-white laser printer.
Tiled together, these pages can be reconfigured
into posters and flyers at a variety of scales;
folded or cut in half, they become event
programs.
The system managed to avoid the usual
hackneyed imagery of No. 2 pencils, grid lines,

Salton Sea
Desert Cantos
Richard Misrachs dedication to the Southwests
desert at first seems to echo a landscape
documentary tradition more than the social-
documentary work with which he began his
and overprinted process colors. Prominent
typography draws attention to the typeface
choices, which are explained in small captions.
Brightly colored paper and tape reveal the
divisions between units, while the AIGA and RISD
logos sit at the edges, holding the modular system
together. By making our design decisions
transparent to the viewer, the project is a self-
reflexive example of graphic design in action. It
shows, not tells.

Cantos series, with its individual segments divided
up between the terrain, events (the landing of a
space shuttle, military testing), floods, and fires,
has as much to do with social issues as with mans

Cherry tomatoes of Pachino (this is what I'vefound):
Pachino tomatoes are rightfully famous, especially
in Italy and Europe, and so treasured that a few
years ago in their home country they were grantedIGP statusa designation similar to the D.O.C.

at least part of the production of a product is in a
particular area.
For the pomodori di Pachino, this area is in the

for its year-round mild weather, few frosts in the
winter and spring, long glorious days of sunshine,
rich soil, and just the right amount of salinity in

"Edward Hopper kept meticulous records in
journals over a lifetime of his paintings, makingcareful drawings of each work before it left the

The Pachino was first cultivated in 1925 but didnt
become popular until the 1970s; since then, it has
been the tomato of choice for cold pasta dishes
and salads, and is even used on pizza. In fact, if
you do an Internet search for recipes using fresh
tomatoes, particularly in Italian, youll find many
that specifically call for the Pachino.

Beijing, 15,000 artists, architects and other fans

But the appeal of the Prtizker Prize winner's

explosively that a contingent of pirate architects

experienced a relapse. He proceeded to Venice,
and expired there at the age of nearly sixty-five.
His disease was one which had affected him from
an early age, caused by the continual use of
carving-tools, producing a depression of the ribs.
The most distinguished funeral honors were paid
to his remains, which were deposited in the
temple at Possagno on 25 October 1822. His heart
was interred in a marble pyramid he designed as a

Manhattan, New York
Here the original manuscript for Jack Kerouac's On
the Road, hammered out on a roll of teletype
paper over an amphetamine-fuelled three weekburst in 1951.
Wikipedia explains:
Kerouac often promoted the story about how inApril 1951 he wrote the novel in three weeks,
typing continuously onto a 120-foot roll of
teletype paper.
Although the story is true per se, the book was infact the result of a long and arduous creative
process. Kerouac carried small notebooks, in
which much of the text was written as the
eventful span of road trips unfurled.
